April/June 2007 Issue 16

In a city that sprawls as far and wide as Perth, it is fair to say the music community is quite, well, small. This has led to at least two certainties; everybody seems to know everybody, and it is quite possible to literally see the 'six degrees of separation' theory being played out before your eyes. A fine example of this can be seen in recent local success stories The Sleepy Jackson, Little Birdy and End of Fashion. Perth blues veteran Rick Steele's two children Luke and Katy front two of these bands whilst ex-Sleepy Jackson member and End of Fashion front-man Justin Burford was romantically linked to Ms Steele. The fourth band inextricably linked to this lineage of Perth rock royalty is local alt-rock band One Shining Moment.
Fronted by Adam Burford, Justin's younger brother, One Shining Moment has quickly become one of 'the' names around town. Their familiar yet unique sounding tunes have been compared to the likes of The Smashing Pumpkins, Placebo and Muse, a comparison the band seem more than happy with. "From sixteen to eighteen I pretty much listened to The Smashing Pumpkins and that was about it," admits Burford. "And I didn't start playing guitar 'til I was about sixteen or so. Before that I just liked listening to it and then I decided I wanted to start creating it."
Following a personnel change midway through last year, which saw the addition of bassist Laura Bailey, the quartet, including guitarist Phil Filing and drummer Jake Bishop, are looking forward to a big 2007. And with the eldest member yet to reach their quarter-century (Burford is 23), you would say things are looking up at the moment, no pun intended,
Burford is more than happy to admit the band's family connections (Bailey is daughter of former Rudi and the Aardvarks and one-time AC/DC bass player Robert Bailey) have been both good and bad for the band. "There are definitely pros and cons to it, like the certain expectations people come to have," he says. "But I guess it gives us a bit of recognition, like if there are three bands on the line-up and we're all fairly unheard of and one of them is tied in with End of Fashion, it can make us a bit more recognisable." When pressed whether he likes or dislikes these expectations and comparisons between his elder brother's band and his own, Burford quickly responds, "I've never tried to leech off him. It would bother me if that was the case but he's got his own thing, I've got my own thing and we're both separate and don't even see each other that much because of the nature of touring."
Bailey happily recounts the day she arrived home disappointed to find an old bass sifting in her room and not the drum kit she was hoping for. "I don't think he was up for putting up with a drummer but I always wanted to play some sort of instrument," she says. Other memories Bailey recalls from her rock and roll upbringing were the family barbeques littered with music industry figures in attendance through her mum's connections as a producer of the eighties music show Countdown, "She's friends with everyone, which is cool," she says.
As one of the most connected bands in the Perth scene it is no surprise to discover how Bailey came to be rocking along side Burford and co in the first place. The band's manager Mike asked one of Bailey's mum's friends from MGM if he knew of any bass players that might fit the line-up. This unsurprisingly led to Laura, who had previously been taking her dad's rocking roots to the next level and playing in metal bands. "I used to be into metal and I was in a few metal bands but the guys were really prejudiced against females which just drove me insane," she says. "So I just auditioned and it was fun and straight away it sort of took off. The transition from metal to like Placebo and Nine Inch Nails and all that kind of stuff was perfect."
With Burford at the core, One Shining Moment has been going for almost four years. Throughout this time he has endured the role of principal songwriter but concedes this is changing and seems all the more happy for it. "In the past I've kind of just done demos and got the band together and worked them out but we're moving much more towards a group writing process," he says. "We're still getting there and getting the process down. We haven't been together that long with this current line-up so we've been getting to know each other and getting to the position where we can write together." Bailey agrees and says it is already starting to pay off. "That process is really starting to work. We've had a few rehearsals now doing that kind of thing and it's been awesome," she says.
Since their first show mid-way through last year at the Hydey, the band has shared the stage with the likes of The Simian Line, Mink Mussel Creek and The Trevallys, with the biggest gig to date being the Gloucester Park New Years show, which Laura describes as "awesome". And with plans for an EP and a whole lot of gigging this year th - Groove magazine

"ReAckt! Magazine"

"If Anyone needed proof that Perth's music scene is just as strong at grass roots level as it is on the nation-wide commercial front, they need look no further than young four piece One Shining Moment. What they lack in years, they make up for with passion, drive, and some damn good tunes.

In a world that is fixated with lumping stlyes of music into one genre and hoping each individual band will fit nicely inside it's little allocated box, One Shining Moment are a refreshing change. Thier sound can be described with the loose term of 'rock', but its clear to see (and hear) that the music is beyond being defined by one word alone.

Their influences, such as Placebo, Smashing Pumkins and The Cure, are shared by many a band around town, but you'd be hard pressed to find a local act that could be suitably compared or likened to OSM..."

"...One Shining Moment are succeeding in building their own fan base on their own merits. Aside from the excellent musicianship of all the members, it's Adam's songwriting, and impassioned delivery of those lyrics that really sets the band apart from the pack..."

"Zillo - German Dark Metal Goth Magazine"

(translated into english from German)

'The band OSM, established in 2003 in Perth, risk/venture the first step into the public eye (in Europe) with this demo-CD.

The three songs on the CD reveal great potential. Somewhere between “alternative” and “wave” the Australians create wonderful emotional atmospheric resonance. They sometimes sound more stately or dynamic/explosive, which all together guarantees alternation of your feelings (hot and cold beats) when listening to their music.

Mixed emotions are brought to the fore by the impressive (powerful, forceful) androgynous vocals of the front man and guitarist Adam Burford, which get under the skin immediately and shape the unique music.

In Places here and there you may think of bands like “Placebo” or “Muse”, but throughout all their songs OSM follow their own concept, which could predict a great future, if luck is on their side"

Biography

While other bands comment on the ‘major radio ready-ness’ of ONE SHINING MOMENT, ONE SHINING MOMENT play Adam Burford’s intense songs of love, life and strife with focused intent, as if each show is being broadcast live to a global television audience. In songs like Every Mistaken Path, Sunset and Shatter like Glass, Adam invokes an intimate experience, creating some kind of gravitational pull as the audience lean toward the stage, being drawn in, mesmerised by a secret, not wanting to break their connection to the performance. Just as the audience forgets to breath, the band release the breaks and open up into full on alt-rock repertoire programming, with songs like Checkmate, Come With Me and Comes Undone.

Sometimes there are traces down a SMASHING PUMPKINS line, or a hint of RADIO HEAD in their spirit, with newer songs journeying off towards a more catchy, quirky MODEST MOUSE kind of swagger. German Dark Metal Goth Magazine ZILLO put it this way: “Mixed emotions are brought to the fore by the impressive (powerful, forceful) androgynous vocals of front man and guitarist Adam Burford, which get under the skin immediately and shape the unique music.”

In empathy to Adam’s voice is support vocal by bass player Laura Bailey, who’s playing style and performance is derived from influences as varied as JazzWA mentoring by Matt Willis and Pete Jeavons, JCCA metal /hardcore days with Shaun McIlroy ATVENA’S WAKE, through to recent imprint from Perth’s young emerging psychedelic scene. On drums is Jake Bishop, a rock solid player who knows how to sit in the groove, with Alan Balmont from AMMONIA as an early mentor and now studying at Leederville TAFE under the guidance of the Warburton brothers, Scott Adam and crew. While Phil Filing on guitar cuts a clean, contemporary counterpoint and provides many of ONE SHINING MOMENT’s signature sounds and figures.
