"One Way State - The Right Time - Review"

Entertainment Alberta - Edmonton, AB

Local Edmonton band One Way State has released two albums to this date and has been able to garner a following that has allowed them to share the stage with such greats as Steven Page from the Barenaked Ladies , Ill Scarlet, Scatterheart, and Maurice just to name a few.

One Way State has a sound that most people in Alberta can connect to. Their music is very clean and meshes wonderfully with the vocals provided by Cody Mack. Lead guitarist Nick Moir is not only incredibly talented, and infuses his playing with a passion that brings the listener in to make sure all is heard. Though it is the guitar that sets this band apart from some of the other indie bands that I have heard in the recent past, every song on The Right Time is near-perfectly executed – this is one rock band that isn’t coming out to make noise, and for that alone there will only be more noise made about Edmonton’s One Way State in the future.
Discography
“One Way State” EP – Oct 26/2010
“The Right Time” EP – Mar 16/2012

Behind that powerful music are some incredible lyrics to back them up, best heard in Riot, an upbeat song that will get you up and moving, but with an unexpected lyrical depth, speaking of never giving up and always fighting for what you feel you deserve in this world. We hope to catch up with Cody Mack and the rest of the band to learn more about being an Alberta alt rock band, and what inspires their lyrics that are so easy to connect to.

"The right time" is the 2nd release from Canadian modern rock band One Way State, this is a good one too. I really like their 90´s modern rock with traces of powerpop, there aren´t that many bands around today that sounds like One Way State. Back in the 90´s, you´d find a new band in every corner of the world every other week but the music climate is different today and only a handful bands pop up in this genre. The first track "Riot" could´ve been an unreleased Foo Fighters song, I love the guitar riff in this one. The following 2 tracks "Midnight hour" and "Unsaid" sounds like a mix between Splender and Third Eye Blind, strong hooks in both choruses. The only track I don´t care that much about is the laid back "Cycle" that feels like a filler here. A great band that will be performing at the 2013 Canadian Music Awards.

"One Way State - The Right Time (press release)"

One Way State is "straight-shooting, sensible prairie power to scratch that musical itch you didn't know you had." Their new album "The Right Time" has earned them a ton of press across Canada, and it's no wonder. Their sound is polished rock with smart pop song structures and absorbing melodies. The band are extensively touring Canada in support of the release, and should find their way to the U.S soon. - The Good Guys Corner

Modern rock straight out of our friends up north, One Way State is bringing it to the ears of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada with their latest release, The Right Time. Members Cody Mack, Nick Moir, Brandon Thomas, and Charley Jeske have good reason to be proud of this collection as it picks up more and more fans not only in Canada, but here in the states as well.

Mack says of the new record, “It listens well. Definitely a straight-shooting effort. A lot of our live dynamic has carried over into the record, and our songwriting has matured nicely since our first EP back in 2010. There has been particular interest in ‘Riot’ and ‘Unsaid’, with the latter being our next single. Our overall musicianship and performance has improved greatly as well. We feel it’s a high-quality record, and well worth the money.” If you’re into modern rock with a focus on melody, The Right Time is the right listen. Get into it. And check out www.onewaystate.com for some tour information to catch a live show. There’s a lot more to get into, so keep reading for all the answers to the XXQ’s.

XXQs: One Way State

PensEyeView.com (PEV): How would you describe your sound and what do you feel makes you stand out over the others in your genre?

Cody Mack: I guess you’d classify One Way State as modern rock, albeit a little more on the adult alternative side of it. We tend to put more emphasis on melody than most in the modern rock genre, and it gives our sound the poppy catchiness that makes it stand out.

PEV: Calling Edmonton, Canada home, what kind of music where the members of the band into growing up? Do you remember your first concert?

CM: Our tastes vary greatly, but the common ground lies with Radiohead, Foo Fighters, Chili Peppers, Sam Roberts, Silversun Pickups, and Coldplay. It gets pretty diverse and eclectic from there. My first concert was actually a Diamond Rio gig. They were my favorite band when I first got into music. I think I was 9 or 10. It was an amazing experience.

PEV: What was it like trying to break into the music scene in your hometown, when you first started out as a band? What was your first show like together as a band?

CM: It’s as hard to stand out in the Edmonton scene as it is anywhere else. There are lots of great artists and bands around here, and the competition is quite fierce. That said, everyone supports each other, and the standout groups do quite well here. Our first show was a sellout in a 125 person venue, so it was packed and hot. We played great that night, despite our nervousness.

PEV: What can fans expect from a live One Way State show?

CM: We try our very best to put extra effort in engaging the audience. High energy, great songs, and great musicianship. We want people to come back and see us, so we give everything we have on stage, and hold nothing back. Our faster material gets people dancing, and thirsty for booze, which makes promoters super happy with us!

PEV: What is the first thing that comes to mind when you step on stage?

CM: Must. Engage. Audience. I always challenge myself to find new ways to engage the crowd. Since I’m the guy with the mike, I know that I’m responsible for making sure people are involved and having a great time. I sometimes involve social media like Facebook and Twitter, since people are attached to their phones anyway.

PEV: Do you have any “war stories” from any live shows? Where something happened and you were not sure how to handle it?

CM: We were playing a show in a small town just north of Calgary. In the middle of a song, this old woman walked right up on stage and requested Fleetwood Mac. She was right in my face, and I was worried that I would accidentally knock her over, due to the fact the I sometime play with my eyes closed. High stage, too. Didn’t know what to do at the time.

PEV: What was the underlining inspiration for your music? Where do get your best ideas for songs?

CM: I’m habitually inspired by real events, whether they happened in mine or someone else’s life. Most of my best lyrics have come from extreme hardship and difficulty. Lately, some of my personal inspiration has been from issues of a political nature, but I try not to use the band as a soapbox. That gets old after a while.

PEV: Thinking back to when you first started out do you ever look back at your career and think about your earlier days and how you’ve arrived where you are today?

CM: It’s been a long road for all of us. We’ve all made sacrifices to chase this dream, but it feels like we get closer and closer to it every day. We’re all in this to succeed; whether it’s personal or financial. We’re all stoked to be where we’re at. It’s not exactly the easiest road to travel. If it was, everyone would do it.

PEV: What’s one thing we’d be surprised to hear about the members of One Way State?

CM: None of us smoke cigarettes. That fact seems to blow minds for some reason.

PEV: What is the story behind the band name?

CM: I came up with it when I defined our direction. We’re in a collective state in which there’s only one way to go: Up.

PEV: Tell us about your latest release, The Right Time. What can fans expect from this work?

CM: The album listens well. Definitely a straight-shooting effort. A lot of our live dynamic has carried over into the record, and our songwriting has matured nicely since our first EP back in 2010. There has been particular interest in “Riot” and “Unsaid”, with the latter being our next single. Our overall musicianship and performance has improved greatly as well. We feel it’s a high-quality record, and well worth the money.

PEV: What is the feeling you get after a song is complete and you can sit back and listen to it being played the way you envisioned?

CM: Most of the time, songs turn out a little different than the version in our heads, but it’s usually better anyway. When we finished The Right Time, we all felt a collective sense of pride in what we accomplished, and we’re stoked that many others have gotten behind the band as a result of our hard work.

PEV: With all your traveling is there one area you wish you could travel around and play that you have not yet?

CM: We’d love to play in England and Europe, but a part of me would equally love to troll through the thick of the US, especially the Mid-West and the coasts. Lots of places to play and lots of people too. Some time on Route 66 would be epic.

PEV: How have all your friends and family reacted to your career? What’s it like when you get to play at your hometown?

CM: The support from our families and friends has been unbelievable. They’ve been with us through the good and bad, been available to give constructive criticism to help us improve, and supported us financially by buying our merch. Without them, we’d be nowhere.

PEV: What can we find each of you doing in your spare time, aside from playing/writing music?

CM: Other than our usual hangouts with GF’s and families, Nick has a thousand hobbies, it seems. Riding bikes and camping are his favorites. Brandon likes going to gigs and working on cars. Charley likes his video games and various sports, and I dig reading, working on my car and traveling.

PEV: Name one present and past artist or group that would be your dream collaboration? Why?

CM: I’d love to apprentice under Radiohead, due to their innovation in modern rock. They always seem to go where I’d like to go as a musician. As for the past, I’d love to sit in on a songwriting session with The Smiths, if only to witness the chemistry between Morrissey and Johnny Marr.

PEV: Is there an up and coming band or artist you think we should all be looking out for now?

CM: I like a lot of Canadian indie rock at the moment. One that stands out is Imaginary Cities. Hey Rosetta! is fantastic as well. I also like where Young The Giant is going with their career. I’m interested in their next record for sure.

PEV: If playing music wasn’t your life (or life’s goal) what do you think each of you would be your career?

CM: It’s always been music for all of us. I might be a mechanic or some kind of business owner. Brandon is already a mechanic and loves it. We’re all sitting here kinda shaking our heads at the thought of a life without music as a career choice. It’s just always been music.

PEV: So, what is next for One Way State?

CM: More radio airplay, more reviews of The Right Time and tour, tour, tour. New material is a focus as well. We’re always writing and recording demos, and we hope to have a full-length out sometime in late-2013. I guess we’ll see how The Right Time is received! - PensEyeView.com

"One Way State - The Right Time - Review"

One Way State is a straight-shooting, sensible prairie power to scratch that musical itch you didn’t know you had. Their New record “The Right Time” exhibits a raw, gritty sound that preserves catchy pop undertones that create a final product that separates One Way State from your run-of-the-mill alternative rock band.

The group has racked up an impressive touring resume, with 4 tours across Western Canada since November 2010. They were nominated for two Edmonton Music Awards (Best Live Act, Artist To Watch) in 2011 and 2012, respectively, and participated in two Sonic 102.9 Band of the Month Showcases. On top of this, they opened for iLLScarlett in 2010, and Steven Page (Barenaked Ladies) in 2012.

“The Right Time” comes, therefore, at the right time in the bands career. “Riot (Midnight War)” leads off the album the right way; catchy chorus, smooth guitar riffs, and a drum beat you could dance too dominates what I found to be a quite enjoyable track. Other highlights include “The Chase” and “The Right Time” which capture lead singer Cody Mack’s vocals really shining on each track. Somber lyrics spoke to very relevant lyrics for any listener, and each verse led right into great choruses again and again. This being said, I would expect One Way State to be picking up more momentum towards the end of the year. - T. Blake Raps

One Way State: A Canandian Breeze Of Alternative Rock

One Way State is a straight-shooting, sensible prairie power to scratch that musical itch you didn't know you had. New record "The Right Time" shows both franticness and maturity in its genetic makeup. A raw, gritty sound and intelligent pop overtones with an intense and frenetic live show...ready to set fire to the stage.

The Edmonton-based band, One Way State, is a force to be reckoned with. They are an eclectic mix of Alternative, Rock, and Pop/Rock. If you like Third Eye Blind, Matthew Good Band, Hey Rosetta, The Foo Fighters, and Radiohead, you are sure to love them! Cody Mack takes control of the lead vocals. Nick Moir is responsible for the marriage of the guitars and vocals, while Charley Jeske keeps the beat going on the drums and Brandon Tomas holds down the rockin' for with the bass.

Their accolades are endless. With four tours across Western Canada since November 2010, the band started with a bang! After being nominated for two Edmonton Music Awards (Best Live Act, Artist To Watch) in 2011 and 2012, respectively, they participated in two Sonic 102.9 Band of the Month Showcases, opened for iLLScarlett in 2010, and Steven Page (Barenaked Ladies) in 2012.

Who says the West doesn’t know how to rock? Meet One Way State; they’re a catchy new rock band who isn’t scared to push the limits. If you’re into Matthew Good, Sloan or pretty much any kind of Brit-pop then this band is for you.

The band consists of four rock-loving knuckleheads from Edmonton Alberta. Cody Mack (lead guitar, vocals) and Nick Moir (guitar) were the first to test the waters of One Way state after realizing that the bands they were each already in weren’t giving them enough freedom. Shortly after starting the band along came their bassist, Brandon Thomas and drummer Charley Jeske who both quickly proved to be amazing musicians.

Their latest album “The Right Time” was just released last April and is already on fire. It features six lively tracks that highlight influences like Radiohead, Foo Fighters and just about everything in between. The album cleverly starts off with an upbeat first track “Riot (Midnight War)” which gets you hooked in a matter of seconds. Need to relax? No worries, the album also includes calmer tunes like “Rust” which are still just as catchy.

Although the middle of Alberta isn’t exactly the ideal place to start your careers as mainstream rock stars, the boys are off to good start. They’ve gotten publicity from nearly every part of Western Canada and are aiming to play at both South by South West and this year at Canadian Music week, so keep an eye out!

It’s safe to say that yes, thanks to One Way State, the West is still keeping the “rock” in Rocky Mountains –I know, I know , I’m hilarious… - Nadia Dar, 27 Nice Things, Toronto, ON

So many local goodies; writing this is one lucky girl.

When it comes to cities, Edmonton isn’t much to talk about (in my humble opinion). Despite that, we’ve managed to rile up a rocking music scene, especially for those bands still sending vibrations through the underground.

As for One Way State, I’d say there is a mellow way to their magic. I recently had the pleasure of biting into their new EP The Right Time. I find myself impressed by their energy and charmed by their obvious dedication. We all know I prefer sets that leave blisters on the ears, and for some of my punky cravings they do deliver. (Refer to songs like The Chase and you’ll see what I’m talking about.) But more than anything they’re a band of emotionally driven rock. Their songs cut with precision and the melodies are made with sincerity. There isn’t a lot of grit here, but there is a lot of heart.

These boys have been touring like mad, yet have no indications of burning out. This is a good sign, especially for a band in the budding stages of their career. If they are given the chance, they will surely collect a loyal fan base. - Caitlin Hoffman, biggerthanbeyonce.com, New York

For the 3rd day in a row, I back with new indie music worth checking out. Today I am going to keep it simple, If you like Third Eye Blind, Radiohead or Foo Fighters you got to checkout One Way State.
Today's band, One Way State is just another reason why I love the Canadian music scene. Not only do they have a great sound but the talented Edmonton group also lead me to believe they still have yet to reach their peak.

The band released their album The Right Time a few months ago in April and the CD can found on iTunes. The album which an Alternative Rock feel and a classic one at that, was very entertaining and left me asking about the older material.

Looking for the bands older music I found out One Way State toured the vast Canadian landscape in support of their debut release "One Way State". I learned the first single, "Empires Fall Daily", has enjoyed moderate success on campus radio across Western Canada and They also performed at numerous festivals like NewMusicWest and SOSFest in Edmonton. - Your Spokesman

Fresh off their recent tour of the Canadian Rockies, we take a listen to One Way State's latest record entitled, ‘The Right Time‘. These guys have been generating a nice buzz around the great nation of Canada, so let’s see why!

At first listen, you will immediately feel like this band is a ‘feel good’ version of The Foo Fighters. Quite a good thing if I say so myself. The band pleasantly rings through your ears and really is a pleasure to listen to. Don’t expect anything over the top from One Way State. This is a band that has a very relaxed sound whilst retaining a dash of Rock n’ Rolls punch and glamor.

Positivity seems to be a fore frontal message on this record. Every song feels like an uplifting promotion of peace. One Way State never goes too deep with their message though. The band doesn’t load a heavy burden of thought provoking lyrics or complex rhythms onto the listeners shoulders. This is music you can listen to in any situation. No thrills Rock at it’s finest.

As we have come to expect from modern Rock albums, the production is fantastic. Crisp, clear and warm is the aim of the game and One Way State plays the game very well with this album. ‘The Right Time‘ is simply a great performance partnered with great production.

If you’re looking for something easy to get into and something that you can listen to no matter how you’re feeling, then check out ‘The Right Time’ by One Way State. Simply put, One Way State is the ‘feel good’ band of the year.

If you have been waiting for The Right Time you can stop waiting because it’s right here! Right now is the right time to pick up Canadian rockers One Way State’s sophomore effort The Right Time.
One Way State is a four piece alt-rock/pop rock band from Edmonton, Canada.

Their blend of catchy guitar riffs and emo-ish lyrics with tight harmonies sprinkled on top, sets the foundation for the album. It has also garnered them high praise in various reviews and interviews. (including this one )
Immediately you are drawn in from the opening riff in Riot (Midnight War). Crisp clean and on point.

After that, you are taken back to a time when bands like Yellowcard and Jimmy Eat world were starting to permeate the airwaves.
Don’t let the opening fool you though. One Way State is not a one trick pony. They slow it down a little for Unsaid and the title track The Right Time. They do this well as they have mastered the laid back feel of bands like Third Eye Blind.

The guys pick it right back up with The Chase, another energy packed track before closing out with Cycle and Rust.

Overall, The Right Time is a solid collection of songs that leaves us hoping these guys find the right time to tour near this area soon. - Jedi Gro, Middle Tennessee Music

Not every band out there is out to change the world or invent some new musical style that will change the face of music. Some bands just want to write radio friendly rock songs and have fun doing it. There is an honesty in that and you have to appreciate it. One such band that is living that dream is One Way State.

The band is not alone in their hometown of Edmonton, Canada in their quest for straight ahead rock and roll stardom. One Way State has built a strong following in western Canada with their intense live shows that have been described as hour long controlled explosions. They have been touring the area and spreading their message of crisp melodies, loud guitars, and a thundering rhythm section to a crowd ready for it.

One Way State recently released their second EP The Right Time and is fully prepared to bring it to the masses. The opening track ‘Riot (Midnight War)’ doesn’t take long before it slaps you in the face with a catchy start-stop verse and a melodic guitar line that carries the listener through a fun little journey. ‘The Chase’ is another driving rock song reminiscent of The Foo Fighters with a beat that forces you to bang your head along to the drums. Guitarist Nick Moir is not afraid to strut his soloing skills, which in my opinion is a rare thing in today’s pop rock music. All six songs on this record carry the same in your face rock and roll sentiment and at the same time a sugary popness that make them approachable to the masses.

Bottom Line: One Way State is a fun band that is here to rock. If you are ready to have a good time with no grandeur expectations, check them out at:

While merging together the elements of Pop and Rock into their songs and then throwing in an alternative track for good measure the Right Time By Canadian band One Way State will hit your ears on many different levels.

The album starts off with a Pop Rock combo song called “Riot (Midnight War). What a great song to start off an album with. The vocals really bring out the pop sound in the song; the guitars help out a little with a pop sound but lean towards more of a rock sound. There are a few hooks which have an element of pop in them but for the most part the sound of Rock is mostly prominent. I was really impressed by the vocals in the song, they are at a perfect tone and tempo to go along with the guitars and drums in the song. There is a short but sweet sounding guitar solo during a bridge just before the two minute mark in the song. I’m pretty sure this song should easily find its way onto a few college and university radio charts around Canada.

“Unsaid” is another great example of One Way State mixing pop and rock together. In this song Cody softens and tones down his vocals to match the pop sound in the song. The guitars for the most part are kept nice and simple especially during a couple of the verses which helps you focus more on the vocals then everything else. The intro to the song is nothing really special but still catchy and I’m pretty sure it’s because of the simplicity of the hook. The opening hook also becomes one of the main backbone creations in the song. There is a nice breakout during the bridge just before the two minute mark in the song. The softer backing vocals help put a little more emphasis onto Cody’s vocals this happens only a couple of times in the song. One thing I would change in the song would be to eliminate the extra long fade out at the end and would just finish off the song a second or two after Cody is done singing the last lyric in the song.

Now, for my favourite song off of The Right Time ep I would say it is “The Chase”. The pop element that has been so prominent throughout the album so far is pretty much left off as they go full blown into a Rock Alternative sound. Cody dropped the pop in his vocals off for this song and even rips a couple of scratchy sounding “Yeah” in the song, which also seemed to be mindfully placed. The timing between the drums and the guitars seem to be one of the main key factors in “The Chase” success. Charley on drums just plainly and easily hits the right timing and comes in at just the right moment after letting the guitars rip for just the right amount of time. I would say this song would do better than “Riot (Midnight War)” and given the right opportunity and the right pair of ears listening to the song I could see this song making it onto the mainstream charts. The guys make sure a couple times during the song to give us a couple well played out guitar solos.

Reminiscent of great rockers like Van Halen and John Cougar Mellencamp, One Way State is a flashback band that will conjure fond memories of 80s and 90s rock bands who blew us all away. On their latest release, The Right Time, One Way State does rock n
roll music a solid by putting together a classic light rock album that speaks to the hearts of those who grew up with the rock legends of yesteryear.

I love the fact that OWS is not trying too hard to be something they're not. I've heard a ton of awesome rock bands try to put out metal albums and completely ruin what makes them unique...so kudos to One Way State for sticking to their guns.

The 2x Edmonton Music Awards nominees have toured Western Canada spreading good rock vibes to music fans all over their country. Songs like Rust, The Right Time and Riot (Midnight War) give OWS an instant thumbs up for their musicianship. The thing I liked the most about this band is the fact that they're very polished. Many unsigned indie bands go into the studio and can't keep time with one another; the drummer's setting the pace and the guitars and bass are on some other BPM / count.

Overall, The Right Time is chock full of great guitar play, vocals and songwriting. The only thing that could be a drawback is the fact that they would only appeal to a small sub-group of rock fans who came up in the 80s and 90s eras of rock. But that doesn't dismiss the fact that One Way State is a great band who rawks!!

Go check these guys out and purchase this awesome 6 song EP release on iTunes. - Senseitional, I Am Entertainment Magazine

The reason the music business is in shambles has nothing to do with piracy. The problem is that there is virtually no talent that really merits our hard earned money. Seems nowadays, anyone with Autotune gets a contract and airplay. If record labels put their trust and resources with real talent, like One Way State, music as a whole would not be the complete marketing disaster it is today and indie artists would make consistent headway in this industry. People would spend their money to buy the music, and the talent would reap the benefits of their hard work.

One Way State have toured the vast Canadian landscape in support of their debut release “One Way State”. The first single, “Empires Fall Daily”, has also enjoyed moderate success on campus radio across Western Canada. They completed three tours of Western Canada from November 2010 through May 2011, including performances at numerous festivals like NewMusicWest and SOSFest in Edmonton.

Influenced by artists from all genres – from Radiohead to Foo Fighters, from Red Hot Chili Peppers to Dave Matthews, and home-grown Canadian rock from acts like The Weakerthans, Matthew Good Band, and Sam Roberts – they’ve cultivated a sound that, while being shamelessly catchy, retains originality and art, which has proven to be a fine line to walk in 21st century rock.

The stunning thing about “The Right Time,” is that when most bands seem to be tampering down their rougher edges using Pro-Tools, synthesizers, or electronics, One State Way move in the opposite direction: theirs is a brawling brand of aggressive, tumbling rock-n-roll.

“The Right Time” is simply one of the better indie rock albums I have heard in years. The band’s songwriting ability is amazing, the instrumentation, arrangements and production are extremely well done, and quite honestly, every song on the album could stand on its own.

As for the songs, “The Chase” is one of the tunes that you can call both catchy and brutal. The staccato riff is a killer as is the band’s performance. “The Right Time” and “These Days” are more melodic and really grow on you both lyrically and musically over repeated listens. The real standout tracks for me however are “Cycle” and “Rust.” Two radio-ready rockers with a great hook in the guitar line, sizzling six-string solos and a touch of sadness in the lyrics. All delivered with some solid vocals.

Quite possibly my only qualm with this album would be, that I would have kicked off the album with these final two tracks, instead of “Riot,” for quicker added impact. On the other hand though, I’ve never heard on any other album, closing tracks as good as the deeper, more emotional two tracks that close this album. It seems perfectly bookended.

All told, “The Right Time” is a great rock n’ roll album and worth the purchase. I’m willing to fork over the money for this. It has absolutely no duds, from the first song to the last. - Rick Jamm, JamSphere

"One Way State - The Right Time - Review"

Courtesy of: New Music Michael, Edmonton, AB

The tagline for One Way State’s profile states “scrumptious Canadian rock”, and I think that’s a pretty apt description. I’ve been following this local band for a while now, and come to know their leader Cody pretty well. They work their ass off, on stage, in the studio, and probably in rehearsals too, and it’s good to see that come to light in their most recent effort, a six-track EP called The Right Time, for which they’ll host a release party this Friday March 16 at the Brixx in downtown Edmonton. Sadly I’ll still be out of the country, but make sure to head out if you can.

The band plays in the intersection of an imaginary Venn diagram that sees indie rock, alternative rock, and Canadiana overlapping, straight-forward without being over the top. A solid drum track interplays nicely with guitar work that reminds me of a slot car race, fitting nicely in a groove that features intriguing twists and turns, and then at times a nice long straightaway to get up some speed.

Cody’s vocals are also maturing nicely, more diverse with a greater range. Hell, from the title track “The Right Time”, where Cody sings “there’s no way to taste these dreams without dues to pay”, to “the way your silence effects the very science of things between you and me” on “Unsaid”, through arguably the hardest rocker “The Chase”, their songwriting is maturing nicely too. More complex, more layered, deeper, multi-meaning.

Overall, “The Right Time” EP is definitely a more refined sound for One Way State, but with a nice edge to it that you can really sink your teeth into. Make sure to check them out when you get a chance.

"One Way State - The Right Time - Review"

The Right Time—the second EP by Canadian-bred alternative rock band One Way State—contributes to the cycle of sameness in modern day alternative rock music. The album includes overwhelmingly catchy melodies that stick in your brain in a commercial sense without igniting an emotional connection.

This four-piece band featuring Cody Mack (vocals, guitar), Nick Moir (vocals, guitar), Brandon Thomas (bass), and Charley Jeske (drums) consists of an intense rhythm section and in-your-face electric guitars. After listening to the EP inside and out, it still has not resonated with me because One Way State sounds like every other modern rock band in the industry.

One Way State fashions the over produced, alternative rock rhythmic beat that is found on track four of the EP, “The Chase.” That old familiar electric guitar introduction is also demonstrated on the title track “The Right Time,” furthering the misconception that songs like this are authentic rock music.

The fifth track, “Cycle,” develops somewhat insightful lyrics but falls into the category of most rock albums recorded nowadays. The outcome of the song, as well as The Right Time in its entirety, is exposed in the mainstream but fails to develop any genuine connection to the melody.

Instruments should also play a significant role on any album. The Right Time demonstrates melodies one expects to find on alternative rock songs, providing repetition instead of distinction. The EP is a 20-minute continuance of thrashing down guitar chords and overusing percussion patterns. One Way State doesn’t show a unique musical spectrum on any of the six songs featured within their newest batch.

To me, artists are successful if they inspire feelings and emotions that an audience never knew existed before. One Way State has left me with the impression that their music solely exists to target mainstream audiences and to satisfy the marketing industry. The band doesn’t expose distinctive emotions within their music that can resonate with listeners. They may be here to sell, but I’m not buying.

"One Way State - The Right Time - Review"

"One Way State Interview"

OTH: Please introduce yourselves to our readers. Who are One Way State?

One Way State: We start with a solid set of drums by Charley Jeske, thicken it with Bass from Brandon Thomas, colour it with Guitar and backup vocals by Nick Moir and deliver the goods with Vocals and Rhythm Guitar by Cody Mack.

OTH: How did you guys come together to form a band? What gave you the name “One Way State”?

One Way State: Cody and Nick started out in another band together and decided to shake things up by putting a mike in front of Cody instead of a Bass Guitar. They went on to write a great collection of songs that needed some solid rhythm behind it. After a few tryouts, there were no doubts about Brandon and Charley – they fleshed out the songs perfectly. The name of our band comes from the focus that we had in having the same singular focus in life – to get our music out there and share it’s live-wire energy with everyone.

OTH: How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard of you before?

One Way State: We have some very interesting answers that involve a lot of hyphens, because no band likes to limit themselves…but, we play solid and dynamic rock music with a strong focus on melody so that a song might stand up to a quick acoustic version without losing it’s power. We love bands like Foo Fighters, Matthew Good Band and Sam Roberts to give you an idea.

OTH: What’s the process like writing music?

One Way State: It usually starts with a couple of great guitar riffs that everyone grooves on, then we pull it apart, put it back together, then put it back the way it was. Then we write lyrics to replace the nonsense that has been improvised to find the vocal melody! It’s smooth.

OTH: Are you currently working on an album?

One Way State: One Way State: We are supporting our album that was released this year. We have played all around Alberta and B.C to say hi to our fans and find as many new ones as possible. We have had amazing responses to our new material which makes us feel like we got our point across. There are new songs that we are working on and a few of them are making it into our live sets. That approach can really improve a song so that you can see how people respond to the emotion and energy of a song.

OTH: What are your goals before Summer ends?

One Way State: We are currently working on a music video that would give us an awesome way to give great online support to our music. We will continue to post some live videos on YouTube as well as having our songs up so that those interested can try before buying!

OTH: Where do you see yourselves in 2 years?

One Way State: One Way State wants to play in festivals, be in support slots for our favourite bands, have a new album full of songs that we can’t believe we wrote and to attract more people to join our amazing fans.

OTH: What makes you different from other bands?

One Way State: The music has a great focus that is not easily pulled in different directions. We try to pull it apart, but we believe that the best idea wins. It comes down to songwriting over showing off. Getting the emotion of the song to blend with the dynamic that we have finessed since our inception.

OTH: What’s your advice to people who want to be musicians?

One Way State: First: borrow equipment or have someone else buy it in case it doesn’t stick. Second: Once you know that it’s the instrument that you actually want/should play, buy the best gear that you can so you’ll be proud of it years later. Third: Practice, practice with other people, and then practice more when you get home. Fourth: Show off your sweet gear and tell everyone your a musician!

OTH: Lastly, how can our readers keep in touch with you?

One Way State: We are everywhere. One Way State has a new website, you can like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and we are working on a newsletter to cover all the bases. You can check out our music on iTunes and YouTube to see what we’ve got to offer. - Akash Sharma, Officially The Hottest

"Exclusive: Interview with One Way State"

On June 10th we did a quick chat with ONE WAY STATE, a Canadian rock band worth checking out. These guys have just released their new EP entitled “The Right Time”, a must for all of you that prefer the emotionally driven side of rock music.

Hey, guys. How are you? Can you please introduce yourself for those who may not be fully aware of what ONE WAY STATE is?

We’re doing great! Thanks for asking! Hope you’re doing awesome too!
ONE WAY STATE is a Canadian alternative rock band based out of Edmonton, Alberta. We love making sweet music and we hope everyone else digs it too. Listen for yourself at http://onewaystate.com. I’m Cody Mack. I sing and play guitar, and I write the lyrics. Nick Moir is our lead guitarist. Brandon Thomas plays bass, and Charley Jeske plays drums.

Awesome. You caught me in the middle of cheering up for the Polish team on Euro 2012 [smiles]
Please tell us how did the band get together.

Nick and I have been in bands together for years, when I used to play bass. We eventually found that we had great chemistry and started our own band with me as a singer. Found Brandon and Charley through various classifieds and sheer coincidence/destiny.

We’d love to hear about your local music scene, venues, festivals, bands and events that keep it going over there. Tell us how it looks like from your point of view.

The Canadian music scene, and Edmonton in particular, is very diverse. Indie rock from Canada has hardened into an underground gem over the years, and there has always been a healthy punk scene in Edmonton. We’re hoping to ride the crest of the indie rock wave. Festivals like Boonstock and Sonic Boom have brought all kinds of mainstream acts to the area, with a few healthy doses of eclecticism.

Do you only play non-commercial venues, within the DIY circuit? Do your shows feature bands of different genres?

ONE WAY STATE has more of a mainstream sound than most bands in Edmonton, so we usually play the higher profile venues, like The Pawn Shop and The Starlite Room. But we like to mix it up with smaller, more intimate venues like The Artery and Brixx every now and then. Most local promoters in Canada like to diversify the bills they build to maximize draw. As a result, bands from different genres get the opportunity to network and expand fan bases into new territory.

Personally, what’s the furthest you go outside your music genre? Do you go to hardcore, punk or metal shows?

If ONE WAY STATE fits in to any of those three, it would be punk, but that’s a very, very loose comparison. Personally, I tend to like more melodic stuff, but the franticness of punk has always had a piece of my ear. It conveys emotions that not many other genres can convey effectively.

What inspires you to create your music? Who are some of your favourite artists?

Personal experiences mostly, especially when it comes to lyrics. I credit guys like MORRISSEY, PAUL WELLER, KELLY JONES of STEREOPHONICS, NOEL GALLAGHER and JOHN K. SAMSON of THE WEAKERTHANS for paving the way for me. Musically, I think RADIOHEAD, THE CHILI PEPPERS, DAVE MATTHEWS, and indie bands like THE JAYHAWKS, THE WEAKERTHANS, and THE SMITHS play a pretty big part in our list of influences. Throw some BLINK-182 and Rush of Blood-era COLDPLAY in there too.

Ok, about the songwriting process, what is your band’s role in expressing a certain message? Do you try to affect change for people out there?

For the most part, we like to portray a positive image, and messages of hope. Songs like Riot and The Right Time from our newest record paints those kinds of pictures. Lyrically, I like to show the bright side, but there are times that I go into darker waters, like Cycle. I’m not afraid to go into subjects that make some uncomfortable. I wrote a song about the decline of Western civilization a while back, and there has been a few angry/fearful people who don’t particularly like that kind of talk, but whatever. The lines between art and opinion tend to blur,
whether you want them to or not.

Cool. You’ve just released “The Right Time” EP. About how long has it been in development? Was it a struggle to finish it?

The making of any record is never an easy task. Most of the struggle was writing it, which happened over most of 2011. Recording wasn’t a cakewalk, either, but our good chemistry and desire to make something awesome got us through it.

How was it received? How do you measure the popularity of the outing?

Reception so far has been mostly positive, with emphasis on all six songs, depending on who you ask. We’re still looking for more reviews to broaden the opinion a bit.

Are there any plans for a full-length album?

I suppose it depends on how well “The Right Time” does. But I think we’ll start writing new material for another release sometime in the first half of 2013. Whether it’s a full-length or an EP is still up in the air, unless one of the Big Three comes calling!

You’re playing some single shows in June and July. Where have you been touring so far? What’s been your experience as a touring band? Any plans for a national/international trek?

There’s a Cross-Canadian tour in the works as we speak – September thru December 2012 is the target. We’ve concentrated our focus on Canada due to it being more economical for us to tour, but hopefully some positive reviews and press will open some doors for us to tour other countries. It would be rad to get to England and Europe someday.

What about the challenges of being in ONE WAY STATE? Will you survive off your music? Can you talk about making ends running a band?

Again, it depends on how well we do with our current release, but we manage to pay the bills with what we’re doing now. Every cent we make is invested directly back into the band. As far as we’re concerned: if we can draw a decent living from ONE WAY STATE someday, it would be a dream come true.

Thanks! Any final words of wisdom?

Don’t be afraid to follow your dreams, and please be good to each other. Thanks for having us!!! - Karol Kaminski - idioteq.com - Warsaw, Poland

"One Way State EXCLUSIVE"

Who’s One Way State? How you guys all met?

One Way State is a Canadian alternative rock band based out of Edmonton, Alberta. We love making sweet music and we hope everyone else digs it too. Listen for yourself at http://onewaystate.com. I’m Cody Mack. I sing and play guitar, and I write the lyrics. Nick Moir is our lead guitarist. Brandon Thomas plays bass, and Charley Jeske plays drums. Nick and I have been in bands together for years, when I used to play bass. Brandon showed up out of sheer coincidence, and Charley auditioned from 300 km away and moved up here.

What’s the story behind the band’s name?

The name came about when I was pondering the bands’ past and future. We’re in a state in which there’s only one direction worth going: up.

How was it to share the stage with Steven Page (Barenaked Ladies), Scatterheart, and Maurice?

They were all learning experiences in their own way. We learned that there’s a certain way to behave in the entertainment business, and there’s a certain amount of professionalism required to do this music thing the right way. They’re all fantastic performers as well, and they know how to engage audiences.

What are your music influences?

Collectively, they’re fairly diverse. Radiohead, Matthew Good Band, Rage Against The Machine, RHCP, Dave Matthews Band, The Jayhawks, The Weakerthans, Blink 182, Third Eye Blind… Those are the strongest ones.

How you guys felt of being nominated to the Edmonton Music Awards (Best Live Act, Artist To Watch)?

It made us feel like we’re doing something right, and that others are noticing One Way State. It wasn’t something we were expecting as a barely-two-year-old band, but it has definitely been a jump-start.

“The Right Time”. How was the recording and writing process? How you guys came out with the name?

“The Right Time” was recorded in Edmonton with Stew Kirkwood. It was exhilarating and frustrating to record it. The writing process was a little stressful for many reasons, but we approached the project as a united front. The name comes from the title track, and it just fit the situation.

So you are hitting the road? Can you give us more details and what can fans expect from this?

The live show has always been the butter to the bread of One Way State; the bread being the songs. We’ve been on the road a lot, and our experience shows on stage. We’re touring Canada Sept/Dec 2012 to support the record.

What has been the funniest moment you guys have been or took part while touring?

Brandon forgetting his cellphone in a taxi when we were on tour in Vancouver. He’s not known for his athletic stamina, but he chased the cab for 6 blocks to retrieve it. We may use the idea for a video concept, and Brandon’s stoked about it.

Are there any more plans for the near future?

Gaining new fans. More reviews of One Way State’s live show, “The Right Time”, and radio airplay everywhere. They’re hard things to get when you’re not represented by a successful label, but we work hard, and hopefully the work will pay off someday!

Do you guys feel you are moving on the right direction?

We think so, and the press we’ve received certainly makes it look that way. We still have a lot of work to do, but with the support of our fans and magazines like Vents, One Way State could be something really special. - Rafael Jovine, Vents Magazine, Dominican Rep.

"Only One Direction Worth Going..."

After their former band folded, Cody Mack and Nick Moir decided to stick together and explore their musical chemistry a little more.
They started writing and holding auditions and by March 2010, along with Brandon Thomas and Charley Jeske, they formed One Way State.
“Once the band lineup was cemented, we found we shared the same beliefs when it came to music, friendship and how to make this band thing work. I came up with the name based on the fact that we’re in a state in which there’s only one direction worth going: up,” says Mack who is the lead vocalist and guitar player.
The group released their first album a mere seven months after getting together, but it wasn’t until they embarked on a few tours that the guys really got to know each other.
Being on the road gave the band the opportunity to explore new sounds. During that time, they also started conceptualizing their latest album The Right Time, although they didn’t put pen to paper until last summer. By fall, they were already in the recording studio. “The sense of urgency to meet our deadlines and complete the album is definitely reflected in the songs themselves,” says Mack.
“There’s a phonetic pulse that keeps the energy up. My favourite track is the first one called Riot (Midnight War). Every time I hear it, I get that
goosebump feeling. It has a certain impact. We cut it at a blistering pace and basically you get a short three minute burst of alternative rock.”
Mack is hoping the new sounds help tap the Edmonton band into the local scene.
“Edmonton is a city that loves the more artsy sound infusion and we think this album speaks more to that taste,” says Mack, who goes
on to describe their sound as a gritty mix between alternative and indie rock.
One Way State kicks off their Western Canada tour to- night at Richard’s Pub (12150 161 Ave. NW).
Tickets are at the door and the show kicks off at 8 p.m. For more information, call 780-457-3117 or check out onewaystate.com for more on the band. - Jennifer Laraway, Edmonton Metro

"Spotlight: One Way State"

With a sound that is catchy and infectious and songs that are carefully arranged and perfected, One Way State is a local music group on the fast track to move up in the music world. Embarking on four tours since 2010, being part of two Sonic 102.9 Band of the Month Showcases and being nominated “Artist to Watch” for the 2012 Edmonton Music Awards is only the beginning for the group who attributes much of their success thus far to the chemistry they have whether in the studio, onstage or hanging out on tour.

During our interview Cody enlightened us with some stories from the road. On their first tour in November of 2010, while in Vancouver, the guys stopped at a Noodle shop for a bite to eat, high on the excitement of touring for their first time. As they came out of the Noodle shop, Cody remembered seeing what looked like their van being towed, then quickly realized it was! He chased the tow truck down and had to bribe the tow truck driver to give them the van back. Even in circumstances like that the guys can laugh, have a good time and just chalk it up to the experience of being a growing group.

Their live show can be described a “one hour, tightly controlled explosion,” according to front man, Cody Mack. The group, highly passionate about their musical endeavours, strives to leave it all on the stage each and every time they perform. Their focus remains on engaging their audience and maintaining a high level of energy while sharing their dynamic and uplifting tunes with their audience.

The focus of the group these days is on building their presence in Edmonton and beyond. The guys who all work day jobs strive to reach the point where the band can sustain itself and they can live their dream of solely performing music. They plan to continue both touring and recording especially since that’s where they feel they grow as a band most rapidly.

You can listen to some of One Way State’s work on their website at http://onewaystate.com. You can also find the guys on Facebook, Twitter, or buy either of their EP’s (One Way State, or The Right Time) on iTunes.

One Way State will be performing at the Pawn Shop, one of their favourite Edmonton venues, on May 9, 2012 at 8:00pm alongside friends and fellow rock musicians, The Malibu Knights based out of Kelowna. We’ll be there and we hope you’ll join us! Grab your tickets online at http://pawnshoplive.ca or at Blackbyrd Myoozik on Whyte (10442 82 Avenue) - Kacey Plishka, MODCITY Magazine, Edmonton, AB

One Way State

Nominated for: Artist To Watch, Edmonton Music Awards

Vote: You have until Sunday, April 15 to cast your online ballot.

Listen: to tunes from One Way State’s second album, The Right Time, on the band’s website.

Questions answered by: Nick Moir, lead guitarist.

1. Why should people vote for you?

We would vote for them! We love what we do and need to share it with everyone that loves dynamic, catchy, exquisitely crafted rock music. Have you seen our singer’s intensity? Our drummer’s smile?

2. What fictional character is your music most like (and why)?

Nitz from Undergrads. Not the toughest, prettiest or smartest, but he keeps all those components going while others burn out.

3. What are your plans, or what can we watch from you, over the next 12 months?

With our new album released we are reaching as many ears as we can to excite our beloved fans and inspire new ones. Our Western Canada tour is going to be a fantastic time getting back to cities we visited last year to keep spreading the word. It’s going to be a festival heavy summer after that where we will play with our friends-from-other-bands and experience the big crowd vibe. After that it’s back to contributing to the strong Edmonton scene and writing as much new material as we can to keep progressing as artists.

4. Apart from yourself, who would get your vote in this category?

Dawn In The City is full to the brim with talent and passion. A great live band with good spontaneity.

5. Edmonton’s music scene is ______________________________.

Edmonton’s music scene is a lot of fun to be in and sometimes a good challenge when there’s a snow storm on a gig night. We get great opportunities here (such as the Edmonton Music Awards) and look forward to more. Edmonton still loves rock music! - Sandra Sperounes, Edmonton Journal

"One Way State comes to the Rockwater"

Alternative-rock band called One Way State is getting set to perform on April 21 at the Rockwater Bar. The band is heading on tour to promote their new CD, The Right Time, which is out on March 16. They recently got a nomination for “Artist To Watch” at the 2012 Edmonton Music Awards.

They will be travelling all over the Western part of Canada between March 16 to April 21 after kicking off with a CD release show at Brixx in Edmonton on Friday, March 16.

The group takes a simple approach to their music which is based on writing and performing great songs. On the band’s Facebook site they explain they are "Pure rock n’ roll with no limitations and no expectations. Yet One Way State still follows their own path, with a straight-shooting, natural-sounding self-titled debut EP, telling tales ranging from awesomeness to inadequacy, backed by a soundtrack laden with crisp melodies, loud guitars, and a thundering rhythm section."

Some of the musicians who have influenced the group are Radiohead to Foo Fighters, the Red Hot Chili Peppers to Dave Matthews, and home-grown Canadian rock from acts like The Weakerthans, Matthew Good Band, and Sam Roberts.

Front man Cody Mack likens their stage persona to an hour-long, controlled explosion where “No Sweat” means “No Effort.”

The first single, Empires Fall Daily, has enjoyed moderate success on campus radio across Western Canada. They completed three tours of Western Canada from November 2010 through May 2011, including performances at numerous festivals like NewMusicWest and SOSFest in Edmonton. - Darryl Crane - Golden Star

"Soundtrack - One Way State"

The Edmonton alt-rockers in One Way State have forged a path free of limitations with the release of the new EP The Right Time, a vehicle for tales of life's ups and downs. Guitarist Nick Moir shares his personal soundtrack at home and on the road.

At home

Morning: The Black Keys, El Camino. Blues-tinged garage rock that's uplifting and experimental, yet it feels like you've known it forever.

Noon: Mumford & Sons, Sigh No More. It just grabs you with its pure focus and makes you think of simpler times—like maybe a couple of years ago.

Night: Radiohead, In Rainbows. Some of us can't get through a day without some Radiohead. It might be a bit of an addiction. Challenging, yet still lets you settle in for a while without making you think too much.

On the road

Morning: Arcade Fire, The Suburbs. Inspiring album to get started on the drive to the next city or show, but moody enough for some introspection.

Noon: Sam Roberts, Chemical City. When driving through the mountains or crossing the prairies this will colour the scenery perfectly. It makes you proud to be going wherever the van is headed.

Night: Gorillaz, Gorillaz. Mixes it up when pulling into town. The street lights and new sights blending perfectly with the tracks and making the guy with dreadlocks next to you groove to the beats. - Meaghan Baxter, Vue Weekly, Edmonton, AB

"'One Way State' Interview"

A few weeks ago, I received an e-mail from Cody Mack, front-man for local band One Way State, letting us know that they would be opening for Victoria, B.C. band Maurice at the Haven Social Club on May 28th.

*ahem* That’s-this-Friday-tickets-are-$12-haven-is-located-at-15120 Stony Plain Road *ahem*

As always, I checked One Way State’s website. And I found them to be pretty good! Which is lucky, because sometimes, bands email us and they are not so good! And I have to be like their mom and say, “Good job sweetie!” and then find a way to worm my way out of covering their show/CD release/pool party/whatever. But not this time!

Anyway, I liked One Way State, so I said “Hey! Let’s do an interview!”

And then about two days later, I was with my own band, hanging around outside our rehearsal space, when a bunch of dudes pull up and start unloading gear. And I’m thinking, “I know these dudes from somewhere. How do I know these dudes?”

Sure enough, it was Cody and fellow One Way State members Nick Moir, Charley Jeske and Brandon Thomas, who I recognized from their snazzy headshots.

Boy, what a nice group of guys. Which is something noteworthy, because people in bands can sometimes be real jerks. I mean, I’m basically the worst. But not One Way State! You guys would like them. You’d want to buy them a beer.

So anyway, here’s my Q & A with the band, as well as a sweet promo they did for us. (video above)

SALLY: What is the history of the band?

CODY: Nick and I were in another band before this, and once that dissolved, we found that we had some really good chemistry in writing together. Once Charley and Brandon came aboard, our sound developed very quickly.

SALLY: How did you guys land this sweet gig at Haven?

CODY: The timing was right. I saw Maurice at Burnsy O’Flannagan’s in Leduc and was really impressed with them. They have a great album out right now. They said something about coming back to Edmonton and I kinda just threw my name in the hat. We ended up scoring the double bill with them. It’s going to be a great show….well worth the money. ($12 at the door)

SALLY: Any more shows/events on the horizon?

CHARLEY: Our next show is on June 16th at the Billiard Club in Edmonton, and we are booked for two small, four-date tours of Southern Alberta in July. We’ll be laying down tracks in August and September for our record due out this fall, followed by a three-week tour of Western Canada. We’re super stoked for that!

SALLY: Favourite local venue to play at?

NICK: Haven is definitely top of the list, but we had a great time at the Starlite Room on May 15th. Nice stage, nice sound, and they actually gave us a legit soundcheck. We were impressed.

SALLY: How do you guys feel about support for local bands in our city?

BRANDON: It’s alright, but it’s not enough. We would love for more people to be into the local scene. We seem to be very good at promoting One Way State, yet some bands don’t seem to try as hard to fill venues. It also doesn’t help that there’s really only one commercial radio station that puts emphasis on local music. But the Edmonton scene is getting better….those who do come out to shows are devoted, and we appreciate their enthusiasm and support. Especially at the small venues, like Brixx. The regulars make it happen.

"The Right Time for Edmonton’s One Way State"

When’s the right time to release an album? “During the first three months of the year,” some might argue, “when a lot of acts are still in hibernation mode.”

Or maybe just before Christmas, when addled shoppers are looking for presents? (Definitely NOT summer — potential fans are on holidays and journalists are up to their eyeballs with festivals. Hint, hint.)

For One Way State, March 13 is the perfect date for The Right Time, the band’s second collection of rock tunes. (Available via Bandcamp.) The foursome, led by Cody Mack, will then celebrate the release on March 16 at Brixx Bar & Lounge. The show starts at 9 p.m.

"Edmonton's One Way State - band review"

I first learned of Edmonton’s One Way State when they followed me on twitter (see, I told you it happens), and then frontman Cody Mack was kind enough to drop off a couple of copies of their CD in my mailbox a couple of weeks ago. Regular readers of New Music Michael will know that I listen to a lot of music, every day, so unfortunately I can’t get to everything in as timely a manner as I’d like – but I do listen to everything that arrives in my inbox, so I’ve been spinning the band’s self-titled EP whenever I’ve had a chance.

And you know what? It’s damned good – a straight-ahead rock effort that would undoubtedly parlay extremely well to a live venue. They’ve really put the whole package together here, and especially for such a young band (their first show was just over a year ago, on April 10 2010 at the Brixx), I’m incredibly impressed. Catchy lyrics and guitar hooks interplay with a beautifully low bass line that would make this band’s music awesome for an air guitar competition, in addition to of course listening to the music itself.

Check out their myspace site, and give their music (including the first single “Empires Fall Daily”) a good, hard listen.

My feeling that their music would translate well to a stage show is obviously pretty close to the mark, as less than a year into their formation, they were nominated for Best Live Performance at the 2011 Edmonton Music Awards. - New Music Michael

"One Way State hits the road again"

Do you guys remember One Way State? We met them last May; since then, they’ve put out a new record and are about to embark on their second tour – it kicks off this Thursday at Brixx.

“This is our second tour since we’ve been a band,” says lead singer Cody Mack. “After our first tour in November 2010, we were already itching to get back on the road.”

“We seriously can’t wait to hit the road again. We’d love to do this full-time, but day jobs get in the way. Nick is a supervisor in a warehouse, Charley works in television, I’m a server, and Brandon is a mechanic, which comes in handy on the road. All of us would quit everything for a chance to make a living playing music.”

Cody explains that their first tour was paid for by money from past shows and ticket and merchandise sales – and they’re hoping to do the same this time around.

Anyway, despite the fact that, as Cody explains, “Each t-shirt sold is 1/4 tank of gas, so touring bands like ours REALLY appreciate it when you buy their merch,” One Way State is giving away a t-shirt AND a pair of tickets to their tour-opening show this Thursday. To get into a draw for the t-shirt and tickets you just have to leave a comment naming a One Way State song.

“Edmonton has been very kind to us…we know that Edmontonians love live music and love supporting homegrown talent. We’ve been very fortunate to have the family, friends, and fans that we do. They’ve all been very supportive, and we are in deep appreciation if this.” - Sally Poulsen, The Edmontonian

"Edmonton’s One Way State releases EP, prepares to hit the road...."

EDMONTON — While the James T. Kirks are celebrating their 15th anniversary as a surf-rock trio on Saturday at Teddy’s in Edmonton, One Way State is still waiting to make it to its first.

The local rockers cite March 1, 2010, as the date of their inception, and since then, the One Way foursome have survived a mini-tour through Alberta and B.C., as much a compatibility test between bandmates as an attempt to drum up fans.

“The first tour was really good for team-building, because we got to spend a lot of time and do some writing and hang out,” says singer/guitarist Cody Mack.

“We started to get really comfortable and trust each other.”

With one test passed, Mack and his bandmates — guitarist Nick Moir, bassist Brandom Thomas and drummer Charley Jeske — are about to embark on their second, armed with copies of One Way State, a mix of grunge and bar-rock.

The five-song EP takes aim at Mack’s previous issues with alcohol, girls and feelings of futility in songs such as Boredomspeak and There’s No Hurry. The latter, a stompy number, is also One Way State’s second single, based on the opinions of their friends and fans.

“We try very, very hard to listen to what they have to say because they’re the people who are going to be paying for tickets to come to the show, so they have just as much say as we do,” he says.

“The lyrics seems to strike a chord with people — I was really worried about where I was going with my career. There were a lot of vices getting in the way, I was a pretty heavy alcoholic at the time. Then, one day, I woke up, thought about those times and wrote the words. They just spilled out, I didn’t really think about it.”

Unlike the title of their single, Mack is in a hurry to record and release their next effort — a full-length album — before the end of this year.

“I think the next record is going to show something completely different,” he says. “Something a little bit more rock-influenced, a little more frantic and intense, a little louder, and more awkward content, lyric-wise.”

One Way State kicks off its western Canadian tour on Thursday, Feb. 17 at Brixx Bar & Grill with Live In Brighton and Radioflyer. Tickets are $12 at the door. The show starts at 9 p.m. - Sandra Sperounes, Edmonton Journal

"One Way State to leave its mark on Golden"

As the unofficial tour season finds its way into the lives of Canadian indie bands, one band is tempting faith, and likely weather, and is on its way to Taps in downtown Golden. The band is named One Way State and is one of Edmonton’s freshest faces on the rock ‘n’ roll scene. How fresh? Well let’s just say that if they were produce, they’d be stacked at the back of the pile (where the best stuff often lies). Although untested in the scene, people have to take notice as they are finding inspiration from some of Canada’s most recognized bands.

“We get a lot of inspiration from Canadian rock ‘n’ roll bands. We all really like Sam Roberts and his entire band. They are extremely personable guys…just like us,” guitarist and vocalist, Cody Mack said about trying to follow in the right musical footsteps.

Actually, the band, after many years in separate bands, came together as a group in early 2010; it is a long ways for a band to come in such a short time. After playing their first show on April 10th, the gaggle of musicians has not looked back.

The band’s “raw and gritty sound” is what the band is hoping will divide them from all the other rock ‘n’ rollers from Vancouver to Come By Chance, Newfoundland. Their first self-titled record is a five song EP and is still a rookie in the Canadian music scene, simply because it was release mere weeks ago on October 26th.

Although unproven, One Way State is hoping that their live show will turn some heads. They boast a live show packed with intensity and musical flavour; headman, and lead singer, Cody Mack says, “No sweat, no effort” when talking about live music. The band claims that they give it all when on stage in order to prove to the audience that even if you do not like the band, you will have to appreciate the perspiration-drenched effort.

“We are a little on the frantic side; a lively stage presence. We think it is huge to put on a great show. We always want to be on top of our game while on stage, in order to not waste anyone’s time or money,” Mack added.

One Way State is knocking the mud off of their tour van and is hitting the pavement for a nine city, Western Canada tour. With stops dotting across Alberta and British Columbia, the band is looking to forge a following in the west. The boys from Edmonton will be playing at Taps Saturday, November 6th.

“We are not a pretentious band, so come on out to Taps and say hello. We’ll be selling our new album and will have a bunch of other merchandise for sale. We hope to have a blast and to see everyone in Golden,” Mack said in a sort of a rock ‘n’ roll salute.

"Stars Have Aligned for One Way State"

With a new CD out this week and a tour ready to promote it, One Way State is headed to the Pogue Mahone Irish Alehouse, 843 Desmond St., for a Nov. 12 show.

And expect it to be rocking.

The Edmonton-based band has been “blessed with a little luck,” said Cody Mack, although he added “we worked really hard.

“But the stars just aligned for us to get this record out under time and under budget.”

Not bad for a group that only came together in March.

Each member — Mack, Nick Moir, Brandon Thomas and Charley Jeske — had been in other bands with Mack and Moir performing together in Blackberry Traffic.

“We just came togehter,” he said, “because we have the same work ethic.

“And, in eight months, we’ve turned a corner and we’re pretty much semi-professional.

“This isn’t our day job yet but that is the goal — it beats a real job.”

Like other young bands, One Way State is also manager, bookkeeper, merchandiser and PR, but Mack said they’ve each fallen naturally into one of those roles.

And, for him, he loves it, too, and is content to spend hours in front of his computer sending out PR material, lining up gigs and arranging for interviews.

“It’s a labour of love for me,” he said of the work and, more importantly, the music.

“This is the closest to love I’ve ever gone.” - Kamloops This Week, Dale Bass

"Music Notes: One Way State"

For Cody Mack, vocalist of Edmonton's One Way State, sometimes honesty truly is the best policy. While he admits to being less forthcoming in some of his past lyrics, Mack says that the three newer songs found on One Way State's MySpace page are the work of a more truthful songwriter who was inspired by his own experiences with illicit substances.
"I just destroyed everything and built everything back up to where I am now," Mack explains. "It turned into a really cool song in the end."
These days One Way State is sailing smoothly, with an album on the horizon and plans by Mack and guitarist Nick Moir to start their own record label to release the music.
"We've worked hard for what we've done so far and what we're about to do for the next year," Mack says. "We owe it to ourselves to work as hard as we can. It beats searching for a deal and praying you don't get screwed over." -Heather Skinner - Vue Weekly, Edmonton, AB

"Locals One Way State moving onward and upward..."

What's in a name?

For Edmonton-based power pop outfit One Way State, everything.

"There's only one way to go — up. That's the ideal state," said lead singer/guitarist Cody Mack.

"It's about all … living with the same direction," added lead guitarist Nick Moir.

Mack, who was born and raised in Leduc, and Moir, who has lived many places but now calls Edmonton home, are the masterminds behind One Way State, one of the newest members of the Edmonton region's vibrant music scene. The band will make their Leduc debut at Burnsy O'Flannagans April 28 with Vancouver's own Scatterheart.

The dynamic duo of Mack and Moir met in 2006 in a band called Blackberry Traffic. That band crumbled, but the pair felt they had good songwriting chemistry together, so in 2009, they put out feelers for musicians to form a new band.

"We wanted to find band mates, not just band members," Mack explained.

They found what they were looking for — in January, drummer Charley Jeske and bassist Brandon Thomas signed on, and One Way State was born.

Almost right away, Mack said, the ideas started flowing and the band started booking shows. They are preparing to record their first studio release, due out Oct. 5, but that has lately taken a backseat to working on their live show, which won't disappoint, Mack said.

"We're not the stand-up band a lot of bands have seemed to turn into," he said. "We just want to have fun. Having fun, there's no pressure, and what happens, happens."

That doesn't mean the band has left everything to chance, though.

"To me, having a bad show is like missing a one-footer in golf," Mack said. "We know we're good and we're not afraid to tell people to come see our show, because we're awesome. If we put 100 per cent effort into our live show, we'll always have a good live show."

The band members all come from different musical backgrounds — Jeske played in a family band in Carstairs for 11 years before deciding it was time to branch out on his own, while Mack grew up admiring local bands like Drive By Punch and dreaming of one day being a part of the scene.

Somehow, though, the band has been able to merge their diverse influences into a melodic, guitar-driven rock sound and are having fun living the dream.

"I've always walked my own path, and music is a way to do that," Mack said. "If I didn't have a way to express myself, I don't think I could go on."

"There's no limitations to music, nothing to say 'You can't do this,'" added Jeske. "I have a tattoo on my chest that says 'music is my emotion,' and I look at that every day."

One Way State is not about reinventing the wheel. Its about great songs. Great melodies, great lyrics, great musicianship, with a great live performance backing it all up. Pure rock n roll with no limitations and no expectations. Yet the two-time Edmonton Music Award nominee still follows their own path with the brand new EP The Right Time, telling tales ranging from awesomeness to inadequacy, backed by a soundtrack laden with crisp melodies, loud guitars, and a thundering rhythm section.

The Right Time is simply one of the better indie rock albums I have heard in years. -JamSphere

The Right Time is chock full of great guitar play, vocals and songwriting. -I Am Entertainment Magazine

One Way State is the feel good band of the year. -The Raffo Review

Influenced by artists from all genres - from Radiohead to Foo Fighters, from Red Hot Chili Peppers to Dave Matthews, and home-grown Canadian rock from acts like The Weakerthans, Matthew Good Band, and Sam Roberts - theyve cultivated a sound that, while being shamelessly catchy, retains originality and art, which has proven to be a fine line to walk in 21st century rock.

One Way States live show is intense, to say the very least. Frontman Cody Mack likens their stage persona to an hour-long, controlled explosion. No Sweat means No Effort. Their songs are well-crafted and carefully arranged. They are full of that familiar, catchy nature that made the Britpop movement of the 90s so infectious. Their performances have garnered a nomination for Best Live Act at the 2011 Edmonton Music Awards, and allowed them to share the stage with many popular acts, including Steven Page (Barenaked Ladies), illScarlett, Scatterheart, and Maurice.

One Way State toured the vast Canadian landscape in support of their debut release One Way State, and the new offering The Right Time. They completed three tours of Western Canada from November 2010 through May 2011, including performances at numerous festivals like NewMusicWest and SOSFest in Edmonton. One Way State has begun relentless touring throughout Western Canada in 2012 to support The Right Time, and will continue into 2013 with an upcoming showcase at Canadian Music Week.

One Way State innovates themselves by living every day, doing what they want. What they love. What they were born to do. Play music. Grow. Grow naturally with no limitations and no expectations.
