"On This Day are heavy, tight, and making all the right moves promotion-wise. Expect them to be a hardcore music heavyweight within 1-2 years."

"Ready For Launch"

This is not a test. Formerly named Dryrun, local band On This Day is now in its post-trial period, having learned from its metal mistakes.

"We’re in a better place," says vocalist Josh Pereira, 25. "We had fun with Dryrun but this time around we’re more confident in our decisions. We were too giddy then. We’d fall into any little offer or money scam, like ‘Maybe we shouldn’t have spent that $1,000 on that compilation CD in New Jersey that we knew nothing about.’ We’re trying to take our time and do everything right, not jumping head first into everything."

On This Day — which also includes guitarists Corey Pereira and Jeremy Jost, bassist Calvin Lasko and drummer Cory Lent — officially formed in late 2010. In April, the band completed its first recording, an EP titled Black Box Diaries.

"We recorded with Jared Weiss (Legion of Liquor, ex-Port Amoral)," Josh says. "He and Dustin (Jackson, ex-The Afterbeat) have a new studio just above the Royal Albert, Albert St. Recording. It was awesome working with Jared, especially for me, also being a singer."

"His input was well respected," adds Corey, 20. "We definitely listened to him and were open to changing things or doing things differently. We’ve recorded albums in the past with our previous band and, out of everybody we’ve ever worked with, he was the best at really knowing what he was doing."

Influenced by bands such as Atreyu and Killswitch Engage, On This Day possesses a modern melodic metal style that is simultaneously accessible to hardcore headbangers and milder metalheads.

"We don’t want to get too technical to where it’s not really music," says Lasko, 20. "I mean, I like Protest the Hero but on their Fortress album every song is like (does chaotic guitar impression). OK, that’s impressive, but is that a song or are you just doing a bunch of stuff?"

"We like to find that happy medium," Josh says. "If you’re a beginner into metal, you’re not going to get lost listening to our album, but someone who loves technical metal or hardcore metal can still respect us."

Musically speaking, On This Day may not be extremely progressive, but lyrically, the band is pretty deep. Black Box Diaries follows a loose concept, focusing on passengers’ final thoughts as their plane crashes.

"What’s going through people’s minds while they’re going down?" Josh asks. "For instance, the song Well Placed Grenade is about a guy who left everything on a bad note with loved ones and was on his way to go make amends but never had the chance."

Speaking of regrets, don’t miss On This Day’s EP-release show May 28 at the West End Cultural Centre. Opening for the band will be technical metal act Annex Theory, along with Long Term Enemy and Shot, Down South.
