OPA: - Biography

During the early 2000, three students at Malmö Academy of Music decided to found a trio consisting of bouzouki - the Greek instrument - guitar and vocals. Two of the members - Michael Sideridis (vocals) and Andreas Rudenå (guitar) is currently still in the constellation came to be called OPA!. The repertoire was the beginning of traditional Greek music, especially rebetika, the music that developed in the cities of Greece in the first half of the 1900s. In time, the repertoire came to include both older Greek popular music as poetic minted songs. The trio OPA! did, however, only make one appearance before it was time for members to be separated because of study abroad and other obligations.

It was not until 2008, when Zorba the show, premiered at Malmö Opera and Music Theatre, before OPA! took place on stage once again. During one of the composer Jonas Forsell theme nights at the theater group did, now augmented by double bass, accordion, another bouzouki and percussion, success. Motivated to continue playing, thanks to the successful revival, brought OPA! on more and more involvement. On behalf of the City of Malmö was the group to represent the cultural life at an international conference. Additional shows followed at Malmö opera and musical theater, festivals, restaurants, private events, libraries, clubs, etc.

2009, OPA! went into the studio to make a demo recording of a selection of Greek songs. The result was “O apokliros”, an album of eight songs in different styles. The disc is not distributed more widely, but was sold primarily in conjunction with concert performances. 2010, the “O apokliros” got media attention with the performance of a song in the radio program “Folke” in national Swedish Radio's P2.

In parallel with the practice of traditional music was vocalist Michael Sideridis to begin an extensive creative work. As part of his Masters degree at the Malmö Academy of Music 2009-2011 he explored the Greek music and its relationship with the world, including Swedish music. An effort to integrate two cultures, the Swedish and Greek, created Sideridis a musical hybrid with influences from several genres, including pop, rock, classical music and Swedish folk music. The lyrics are in Swedish and the music is characterized by simplicity and convenience. With a Greek traditional music takes new forms and gives rise to a new style of music that has been termed sweek (Sweden-Greece).

For a time there was new material integrated with the traditional repertoire. The crowd began to notice the self-composed songs and the response raised the question of how OPA! would go ahead with the music.

When the three original songs been put into writing, the group chose a new approach in which the recording took place in the Malmö studio Roastinghouse Records. Thanks to this pop approach was the music a whole new vigor. By invitation from the studio to send one of the songs to Melodifestivalen 2012 (Swedish ESC) it opened new doors when OPA! made the competition. This success led to additional songs by Sideridis sweek and the concept has gradually been established - the music is here to stay!

In order to maintain the link to OPA!'s Extensive traditional repertoire constellation Maoukas formed, consisting of the same members as in OPA!. Maoukas, meaning fishing boat, also has a symbolic meaning: the small boat that follows the "mother ship" OPA!.
