- Rolling Stone Brazil

"Revolution artists: OQUADRO"

Tipped as one of the hottest acts in Brazil right now, OQuadro deliver fired-up hip hop with their own unique Bahian kick. That’s high-velocity conscious rap, candomblé drums and dub, ijexá and afrobeat flavours – explosive! Hailing from Ilhéus, south of Salvador, after 10 years together they’ve launched their debut album, produced by Buguinha Dub no less. Now touring Brazil and looking beyond, OQuadro look set to put Bahia’s new hip hop manifesto on the worldwide map.
Workshop: "Rhythms of the African Diaspora" – Salvador’s hip hop heroes OQuadro trace the global journey of African music, discussing culture, human rights and, of course, music. The workshop is spoken and played, we talk about the rhythms of the African diaspora with some explanations and examples playing live.

Previous to this there will be a brief talk by IPOW (In Place of War) – by IPOW’s director and the driving force between Un-Convention, Ruth Daniel who as part of IPOW and the Revolution Artists Project, aims to bring artists from war-torn countries into the UK to play at festivals and who are responsible for bringing OQuadro over. - z-arts

Bio

OQuadro is one of the groups from Bahia, Brazil, which represents a trend in Hip Hop entitled "New School", that seeks aesthetic innovation through dialogue with other musical styles and cultural movements. The group's compositions oscillate between bravery and gentleness, the local and the universal, and its many influences. Recorded at the studios of the label Coaxo do Sapo, mixed and produced by the sound engineer Buguinha Dub, their first cd contains 11 tracks with the selection of the best that the group made over about 15 years of a road life. Themes in various compositions, engaging lyrics, influenced by other arts, like literature and film, show a characteristic way of exposing the typical language of rap. Besides, their musical compositions emanate influences ranging from Dub, pass by Afrobeat and flirt with the Jazz, Rock and Samba. Merged, such rhythms build the musical identity of tireless boys from southern Bahia. With special features, like Guilherme Arantes playing his keyboards and interacting with the band, the rapper from Sao Paulo Lurdez da Luz and Mc Dimak helped brighten even more this album. The CD cover was signed by renowned artists Izolag and Ananda Nahu.

In 2013/2014, many songs of their debut album has been selected in several compilations and podcasts around the world, such as Brazilian Bass Culture, from the british label Far Our Records, and many others. Also, they made a tour in UK, in the Culture Clash project, and presented their music in the Isle of Wigth Festival called Bestival.

For 2014, Coaxo do Sapo label and OQuadro are preparing some new releases, such as an EP with 3 new authoral songs, produced by Alexandre Basa, and a 5 round single with many remixes of a Afrobeat original sound, recorded in 2011. Be prepared!
