EARLIER this year Central Coast metal band Origin of Janken (pictured) packed up the car and headed out Tenterfield way for a gig. Since then it’s gigged with bands Behind Crimson Eyes, Mammal, Juke Kartel and kept the car packed for a gig in Brisbane. The band will film its first video clip at the Chilli Lounge, Wyong, on Friday, June 19, before heading south, this time for a Melbourne gig. "Goats Family Music Festival 2009"

"
FREE FAMILY FESTIVAL WITH OVER 30 BANDS PERFORMING!

Referred to as “The Central Coast’s Version Of Big Day Out” the eleventh annual GOATS Festival. (Going Off At The Swamp) is a festival to celebrate Youth Week. The concept is that the one day festival is an opportunity for young people aged up to 25 to showcase their musical talents to all in the community.

An initiative of San Remo Neighbourhood Centre and brainchild of Centre Manager Jillian Hogan, the event was first held in 1999 at Lake Munmorah with two bands on the back of a truck. Held at Koala Park San Remo, by last year this event had grown to attract an estimated 12,000 people. Over 40 bands and performers on three stages, family entertainment, rides, interactive stalls, a petting zoo, community stalls and market stalls make it one of the largest annual events on the Coast.

Bands and performers are coming from as far away as Queensland (Drawcard) , North Coast (Royal Chant) and Port Macquarie (Royal Chant) to join Central Coast bands such as No Pressure, Checkered Fist, October Rage, Origin of janken , Spread The Ashes and Mind Priorities and acoustic performers such as Karise Higgins, Irene Crouch, Jack Ridge & Hannah Smith and Nevermind Acoustics
This year will also have a strong “saving water” theme, with sponsorship from Gosford and Wyong Council’s Water Authority. As an additional challenge, the organizers this year are attempting a world record – the most number of people to wear a stick on goatie in one day. It should make a colourful attempt with the stick on goaties being green and purple!

A team of over 40 community volunteers of all ages and backgrounds assist in the planning and implementation for many months prior to the day. The Northern Wyong Community Drug Action Team have played a strong role advocating for the event which provides all age drug and alcohol free entertainment.

Jill Hogan states: “This event is a true reflection of what a community can achieve when working together. It isn’t just about the youth performing their music, it also represents all the people in the local community who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to give young people this exciting opportunity. It highlights an incredible co-operative effort where a small community, through sharing of resources and assets, has created a positive, educational and sharing event that is now receiving national attention.”

This year’s National Youth Week slogan which the GOATS Festival has adopted is: “Make A Move” GOATS is sponsored by Gosford and Wyong Councils’ Water Authority, Wyong Shire Council, SeaFM, Coles and Delta Electricity and is supported by LINKS Youth Services ,the Northern Wyong Community Drug Action Team as well as ongoing and valuable support from many other businesses and organizations.

The festival is a family event to be held at Koala Park (Delta Electricity) Scenic Drive San Remo. Entry is free, Sunday March 29th starting 9am finishing 5pm. For further information about the festival check out their myspace: www.myspace.com/goatsfamilymusicfestival . - Hot source

"Origin of Janken new kid on block"

WHILE Origin of Janken might be a new kid on the Central Coast’s music industry block, it is not shy about where it is heading and who it hopes to meet along the way.

Shaun Robinson has fronted the band for only six months but he and his fellow band members agree they have their work cut out for them if they are to be on the Big Day Out stage in 2010.

That is just one of the goals the band has set itself and Robinson, lead guitar player Jamie “Dizz” McKay, keyboard player Sky Kyu and drummer Brad Moses have plenty more to tick off.

Moses and Kyu formed the band two years ago and played in other coast bands before forming Origin of Janken.

The four dipped their toes into the coast’s music scene with a gig earlier this year and will open for Mammal and Poetikal Justice at the Chilli Lounge on Sunday, December 14.

“I don’t even know how we got that gig,” Robinson said, adding another gig was booked at the Chilli Lounge for April and the band was working hard to secure more coast gigs and at top rock venues in Sydney and Newcastle.

“We’ll go wherever fans want to hear us,” he said.

And travel the band will, having returned last month from a gig at Tenterfield where it supported a fundraiser that brought in more than $43,000 for a sick Tenterfield lad and his family.

“It went really well. The gig went off,” Robinson said.

“Everyone was right into it.”

Robinson said the band sung original rock and metal grunge and had a debut EP and merchandising in the works.

The band has been handing out burned discs of tunes loaded to its MySpace site and Robinson said the feedback was good.

“We try and write music that’s for the people and it’s about the recession and stuff but it’s also about how to have a good time,” he said.

Robinson said after Sunday’s gig the band would concentrate on getting merchandise ready for the new year and try to pick up sponsorship to help cover costs.

“We’re doing this all out of our own pockets and we’re completely new to all of it,” he said.

“We’re just keen to get in there and rock on.”

Origin of Janken open for Melbourne band Mammal and South Australian band Poetikal Justice at 8pm. Tickets are $12 from the bands or venue and $15 at the door.

THE O-O-J !
By MICHAEL JONES

Origin of Janken. Most bands choose to describe their sound as 'Un-describable', but with this Central Coast quintet you are going to hear a melodic combination of alternative rock, complex funk time signatures and all the grit of 1990's grunge. You will see a fun live show that has traveled extensively over the past 2 years (including shows in QLD, VIC and covering the entire NSW region). A band that has played alongside some of Australia's biggest bands, such as, Mammal, Behind Crimson Eyes, MM9, Juke Kartel, Bellusira and Breaking Orbit, just to name a few.

But, I guess it's time we meet the player's of this raunchy outfit.

You have Shaun Robinson wailing out the vocals, Dizz channeling the fury of Kurt Cobain through distorted power chords on guitar, Bradd Shickadance going bonzo on the drums and Sixo Kyu hammering the triptacular synths and samples, and finally Rickus Fleming on bass, the most recent addition to the ‘Janken crew’, making their unique rhythm section tight and complete.

Origin of Janken (or OOJ for short) have a sound that is raw, rambunctious and fun. A sound that they have achieved by many hours of playing on stage where their hard work and determination has payed off in spades. Transforming them into a smooth, energetic live show that is gaining them a strong following in their home state of NSW as well as across both Southern and Northern borders.

Citing their major musical influences as being s widespread as Rage Against The Machine and Mammal to Elliot Smith and Talking Heads. OOJ have also listed bands like Nirvana, System Of A Down and the Red Hot Chili Peppers as making just as big of an impact on them. With such a unique combination of bands to draw inspiration from it's no wonder that Origin Of Janken offer such a fun mix of styles. A mix of styles that have recently lead the group to Jungle Studios in Sydney where they recorded and mixed new songs with Aria nominated producer Greg Stace that will be released on their 2010 Debut EP, 'Incendia' (Available as of August).

Origin Of Janken are your one-stop, blistering, energetic band that is comfortable with melting your face sonically and at the same time delivering what a rock band should. Pure, raw, grungy, live fun that leaves the punters in a daze of euphoria and a pool of sweat.

With the release of their debut EP ‘Incendia’ along with planned Promo tours, which will see the band return once again to QLD and VIC this year is sure to be The Year of The Janken!
