"Competition win would be music to their ears"

THE Orulas Crew hopes its Latino beats are hip enough to be crowned Australia’s best.

The 10-piece band - seven are from Moreland - will fly to Brisbane for the Clave Contra Clave Latin bands competition next week.

Group leader Franchesco Viran said he was confident the band, formed two years ago, could win and earn a spot in Sydney’s Grand Finale.

“Our set is all original music and we have a great sound quality,” Viran said.

Having spent a lot of time working on the band’s upcoming album Black Wings, Viran said he was looking forward to the night.

“It will be good to let our hair down after recording a whole album,” he said.

The Chilean singer and songwriter said his music celebrated life and expressed what it meant to be an Australian Latino.

Mixing vocals, drums, trumpets, guitars and the piano, he said the music was very vibrant.

“Bigger bands have a much bigger impact on the senses,” Viran said.

He said the Orulas Crew had a lot of support and performed regularly at Fitzroy’s Night Cat. - Moreland Leader 10 Oct 11 @ 07:00am by Sophie Aubrey

Bio

Orulas was founded by Franshesco Viran AKA Keko in search of a higher plateau of resonance and lyrical expression for modern world music to emerge from Australia.

In this ambitious and highly anticipated project, Keko has set out to reconcile memories and visions of Latin America, with modern Australian realism through spirited and infectious music. Orulas are out to cement themselves amongst Australia’s best Latin musical acts, also as one that epitomises world class quality, by bringing to life what it means to be Latin Australian, and to share with the rest of the world the diversity of the Australian music industry.

Orulas’ songs are based on experiences of migrants growing up in Australia, within the larger than life backdrop of their Latin American heritage. As Keko blends these two unique experiences together, his musical and lyrical compositions are an honest representation of one’s transformation from the Latin American to the Latin Australian social identity.

In addition to the originality of their compositions, a large part of Orulas’ musical portfolio has been co-worked and developed with fellow musician/composer Oscar Poncel (Arakataka) – a solid partnership formed during the years of the highly acclaimed and successful, San Lazaro. This partnership has now been further enhanced by the solid commitment and arrival of fresh creative blood.

With some of the country’s best Latin jazz musicians on board, Orulas approach to music is to preserve it's Latin American Cultural influence and the many stories that try to capture the search of the Aussie Dream.

Orulas has just released their debut album ‘Alas Negras”, which has been produced by Franshesco Viran; recorded by Adam Rhodes (The Cat Empire, Angus & Julia) & Mastered by Ross Cockle at Sing Sing Studios Melbourne Australia.
