"Una voce che viene a cercarvi..."

ottobre 2007

L'intervista

Una voce che
viene a cercarvi...

lirico in Inghilterra. Come concilia queste diverse realtà?

Sono onorato di essere conosciu-
to a Ginevra, che è la mia città
d’adozione dall’età di 19 anni, nel
lontano 19... Perdonatemi, qui
mi fermo... ragazzi come passa il
tempo!
Come dicevo, credo che la mia
notorietà sia nata in primo luogo
dal mio attaccamento alla cultura
italiana, napoletana in particolar
modo, viste le mie origini italia-
ne di “napoletano verace”. Ma
soprattutto è il risultato del mio
impegno presso l’Associazione
Recitar Cantando a Ginevra, di
cui sono membro fondatore, il cui
scopo è di promuovere la grande
cultura musicale napoletana ed
il suo culto attraverso la voce
come strumento ed interprete
dell’animo umano. L’impegno
di tale associazione si sostanzia
nell’organizzazione di spettaco-
li, concerti vocali e strumentali
e nelle attività pedagogiche del
canto, e più specificatamente del
“canto libero”. Questo rispecchia
l’associare la musica classica - “la
ragione” - con l’influenza della
canzone popolare, “l’istinto”, due
scuole strettamente legate che
hanno contribuito al successo
della grande opera napoletana
del 700. Credo si debba liberare
la voce prima di cimentarsi in
acrobazie vocali!!! Una voce deve
venirvi a cercare per mezzo delle
emozioni, e non aggredirvi.
Il suo lavoro d’artista lirico l’ha
condotta spesso questi ultimi anni in
Paesi anglosassoni?

Effettivamente, la Presiden-
tessa dell’Associazione Recitar
Cantando ha molto influenzato
questo moi percorso. Grazie a lei
sono stato introdotto sulle scene
anglosassoni. Dal 2005 sono stato
invitato ogni anno a cantare al
festival d’Edimburgo e nelle città
di Oxford e Buxton e prossima-
mente, nella prima decade d’apri-
le 2008, sarò lieto di presentare
un mio nuovo spettacolo “Napoli
ieri ed oggi... ovvero, À Voce e
Napule...” (con la partecipazio-
ne dell’Orchestra dei Solisti di
Napoli - diretta da una donna,
il Direttore d’orchestra Susanna
Pescetti).

E in Italia?

Sono stato contattato qualche
tempo fa da un’istituzione arti-
stica importante a Napoli (per
scaramanzia, da buon cantante
non voglio pronunciarmi). Sem-
bra che il lavoro della “La Voce
di Napoli...” desti interesse! Poi,
per quanto riguarda la Svizzera,
nell’ ultima settimana del mese di
gennaio 2008, all’Arena di Ginevra
avrà luogo un grande appuntamento
musicale italiano da non perdere...

Pu`dirci di più?

Le sorprese sono gli avamposti della felicità...

Senza dimenticare il nostro invito di
partecipare alle prossime manifesta-
zioni organizzate dalla nostra rivista,
“uomini ai fornelli” e il gala Foglio
d’oro di Ginevra....

...Che sarà un mistero servito
su un piatto in chiave di sol, in
foglio d’oro... da cucinarsi in più
persone...per il piacere culina-
rio di ben amate Signore! ...un
duetto con nobildonna espressa-
mente venuta dall’Italia per me...
Troppo! Troppo! Gentili Signori,
una alla volta! Una alla volta per
carità!... tutti spunti per le mie
prossime “creazioni”. Ma non
voglio svelare niente, altrimenti
la sorpresa dov’è?

Ho scoperto con piacere dal CD
“The Voice of Naples” che lei non
solo canta, ma compone.
Sono vittima della mia natura ar-
tistica, della mia curiosità infinita.
Nel 2003 mi sono cimentato, con
il sostegno e l’incoraggiamento
della Presidentessa dell’Associa-
zione Recitar Cantando, nonchè
mio consigliere artistico, in due
settimane di produzioni musicali
e teatrali al Théâtre Les Salons
sotto il titolo “L’Italie à l’Affiche”.
Sono seguiti “Arie e romanze
d’Italia” (un intermezzo dedi-
cato a Pulcinella, mia creazione
musicale e coreografica alla quale
ho tenuto a far partecipare i
frequentatori dei miei atelier di
canto, che si sono confrontati in
tempi record alla realtà teatra-
le) e un “Rigoletto” in chiave
orchestrale con artisti lirici di
valore venuti da Vienna. Il tutto è
servito a darmi la consapevolezza
della mia vena compositiva, un
dono naturale che sono spinto a
sfruttare sempre di più, semplice-
mente dando ascolto alla voce di
Napoli che vive in me.

Le sue speranze per il futuro?

Pace, Amore e Fantasia... un
grazie di cuore, alla Libero Music
Publishing e all’Associazione
Reciter Cantando che sostengono
il mio lavoro artistico, e alla mia
famiglia - valore fondamentale
caro a noi italiani nel Mondo. In
più, l’augurio per un prossimo
scambio artistico con l’Italia e
l’Europa - incominciando da Na-
poli e arrivando a Ginevra dove

"OSCAR MANCINO in "Napoli E Basta!""

Edinburgh August 2005

"Music, like a torrent you flood my soul, and around me I fly free in space without end." Music from Naples is unashamedly emotional, and as such, needs a passionate performer in order to pull it off. Luckily, Oscar Mancino is just that type. Each song is delivered with emotion and depth, and although I don't understand Italian I can just about get the gist of them. A great performance is also given from the musicians in the Ensemble Recitar Cantando... wonderful music. - Three Weeks, Edinburgh

"...a cd of classical and new sounds"

ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF A PREVIEW OF THE CD "The Voice of Naples" by Oscar Mancino
By Annalisa Lualdi the music critic of
LA REPUBBLICA
JUNE 2005

A CD on which, the baritone and two other composers, Tonino Esposito. and Louis Siciliano have worked elbow to elbow for three years.
Twelve original songs in Neapolitan (with the exceptions of "Voici Geneve" in French, "Musica" in Italian and "Ammore e lacreme", in Neapolitan and French) written by the three and accompanied by a great symphonic orchestra: eighty musicians between those from Saint Carlo and the Conservatory of Saint Peter of Majella, with the best elements of ethnic-folkloristic music.

The result is a product that conjugates learned originality and tradition, dipping into the roots of Italian music, from the popular of the "Gatta Cenerentola" of De Simone to the baroque madrigals of Gesualdo, from the counterpoint of the Neapolitan school of the 500's to the 50's by night atmosphere, without scorning huge, and more modern, influences that recall the sonority of the most beautifulst cinematique sounds.

A most notable aspect of the CD is in the sophisticated technology applied to give great natural spontaneity to voice and orchestra. The acoustics of the disc has been subordinated to new technology: that is to say we have what is recreated virtually, through the perfect acoustics of "Concert Gebouw" of Amsterdam- a meticulous job of audio concertation in which every instrument has the role of supporting the voice.

And the voice, that of Oscar Mancino is surely exceptional: it has a dramatic stamp that is reminiscent of the best interpreters of "bel canto", with unexpected apparitions of popular colour and variations in tonality in each number.

But "The Voice Of Naples" , indisputable technical qualities apart, is sung with a passion that emanates from the heart.
"With a great belief in the importance of interpretation, I want to transmit the pleasure of singing that is an amalgam of instinct and reason " says the baritone, " Naples continues to inspire my songs, and I have never ceased reconciling classical music with the song of the Parthenon: two schools very closely linked."

In the album they alternate the nostalgic - "Paesaggio Vesuviano", "Comme si bella Napule..." -the ironic - "Neapolitan Cowboy", - with the romantic songs that seem to belong to the poetry of another time.

The intermezzi of the songs resonate with the rich and popular sounds of (Neapolitan percussion instruments): the tambourine, mandolin, castagnettes, scetavajasse and putipù. In short with "The Voice of Naples" you set off on a fascinating journey with the privilege of embracing the whole history of Neapolitan music.

Bio

Oscar Mancino says:
To me and my musicians the Neapolitan song is the magic mixture of every genre of music! From the heart to the soul all around the world removing all barriers including language and musical preferences. We have got together to play the music closest to our hearts and real passion knows no boundries..
CANTA NAPOLI... E NON MORIR!!!
WHAT BROUGHT THIS ABOUT : "The Voice of Naples"

An Italian 'Buena Vista Social Club' with the Neapolitan Song as its star: not neglected musicians but a neglected art form, stuck in the groove of O Sole Mio!

THIS IS THE STORY OF 3 NEAPOLITANS:

1. Oscar Mancino - A prize winning lyric artist, pianist and composer living between the UK, Switzerland and France.
2. Louis Siciliano - A composer of several award-winning film scores, musical director, record producer and sound engineer living and working in Naples and Rome.
3. Tonino Esposito - A most respected Jazz musician, accordion virtuoso and professor of music, and of comparative literature, at the New York University.

-All three were born and bred in Naples.
-All 3 were classically trained musicians
-All three had composed original Neapolitan songs

One day Louis Siciliano heard recordings of Oscar Mancino's voice, he picked up his guitar and drove all the way to Geneva, where he declared Oscar to be the new Caruso, the only Neapolitan left who could do justice to the Neapolitan song, and proceeded to sing two songs which he (LS) himself had composed many years earlier, but had felt too protective towards to entrust to anyone...
Louis Siciliano contacted his colleague, Tonino Esposito, in New York, to give him the good news of his discovery, whereupon Esposito also reveals his own hidden treasures waiting for a worthy interpreter!

The result:
The three artists teamed up with a most enthusiastic and dynamic band of classically trained virtuoso Neapolitan musicians to compose and record the music closest to their hearts in Naples.
