In today’s music world, it often seems that artists are more interested in making their music fit into a particular categories than in making music from their heart and letting the musical chips fall where they may. So, it is refreshing for me to have recently listened to Ostinauto’s new CD “The Whole World Spinz Anyway” because it fits into several musical genres – all of which I like. Written, produced and arranged by Robert Bruce Swanson, the CD blends equal amounts of folk, pop, jazz and celtic music to refresh your senses and keep your intrigued throughout the entire disc.

The lead vocalist, Susan Olson, is a powerful singer, part Natalie Merchant and part blues diva. She sings with relative ease through some complex changes and a rollercoaster of cascading, but memorable melodies.

Swanson, who wrote all the music and lyrics on the CD, plays a number of instruments on the album including piccolo bass, bass and piano. He is joined by a capable ensemble of musicians on guitar, percussion and viola to achieve a full, tight, and well-mixed sound. The lyrics are well crafted, deep and reflective with a realistic balance of cynicism and hope.

The band’s name is a play on the word “Ostinato” the musical technique of playing recurring patterns that Swanson has perfected on his featured instrument, the piccolo bass.

If you like bands like The Police, Natalie Merchant, Weather Report, Solas or Manhattan Transfer, you are bound to like this disc. My favorite cuts are the catchy, “The Whole World Spinz Anway”, the urgent “Lost in Love”, and the reflective “My Life is on Hold”.

This CD can be described best by the word "movement". Four of the titles describe movement: spinz, wave, waltz and walk. Many of the tracks make you want to move with the ever complex and changing instrumental parts. But perhaps it's the times when the music suspends pace a bit that the listener is most moved. When the complex instrumentation fades back and sustains, the vocals come through richly and vibrantly. The intricate piccolo bass and viola parts on many tracks leave the listener stimulated. This is a very pop sounding CD. Each song is well written with engaging lyrics and an upbeat musical style. Stylistically, it moves around a bit by including unexpected elements, like the almost Celtic sound showing up in "Hold Me", giving the songs an ongoing freshness throughout the album.

I think fans of the above mentioned artists would enjoy "The Whole World Spinz Anyway" and I highly recommend it for them.

With very good vocals and lyrics, a great album to sit back and relax to. One of the most enjoyable CDs I have heard in a very long time. At first it sounds a bit of a Fleetwood Mac copy but after a few tracks you realize that it is not a copy but as good as any of Fleetwood Mac’s classic discs.
