Oumar Kouyaté

Si vous aimez sortir des sentiers battus, musicalement parlant, et vous évader grâce à la World Music, il y a de grandes chances pour que vous ne restiez pas insensible aux mélodies envoûtantes d'Oumar Kouyaté.

Jeune griot (dépositaire de la tradition orale) venu de Guinée, il joue de la Kora et de la guitare depuis son plus jeune âge. Et pour cause, il est issu d'une grande famille d'artistes : Fils de M’Bady Kouyaté, célèbre griot guinéen, et frère du groupe Ba Cissoko.

Le répertoire traditionnel d'Oumar est influencé par ses rencontres musicales. Sa voix douce et mélancolique illustre ses compositions en mandingue ou en français.
Installé à Marseille depuis 2005, ce jeune artiste de talent approfondit sa création grâce à ses rencontres musicales.
Il se produit régulièrement lors d'événements musicaux régionaux et vient de participer au Festival « Africa Fête » en juin.

Vous pouvez le retrouver dans le cadre des Suds à Arles le samedi 14 juillet pour une «sieste musicale» à 14h30 à l’espace Van Gogh.

The kora, a story of family...
Born griot, holder of the music Mandingue, Oumar Kouyaté is a representative of the young Guinean musical creation. His father, M' Bady Kouyaté, among the last alive bosses of the kora, passed on to him the universe of the Empire Mandingue. Oumar received the same education as his brother, Sékou Kouyaté, the " electric griot " of the band Ba Cissoko, with whom he works even today.

Oumar Kouyaté was known, notably during the festival “ Les Nuits de la Souara’ in Algeria, Babel Med at the “Docks des suds” in Marseille, the festival "Jazz of Five Continents", or still to the festival Africa Fête. Oumar also played at “Maison des cultures du monde” in Paris with Ba Cissoko and his father M' Bady Kouyaté. Oumar also takes pleasure to intervene in schools, to tell the story of the family of griots from which he arises in front of his diverse public.

The Kora instrument of interbreeding
The kora allows to work a wide musical register. So, Oumar collaborated, during concerts with a lot of different artists : Touré kounda during "Les Estivalles de Venelles", or still Dobé Gnahoré (Côte d'Ivoire) and Sibongilé Mbambo, artist from South Africa.

Oumar Kouyaté is based in Marseille today and occurs with a bass player and a percussionist. He knows how to bewitch as well the public of intimist places as impose his melodies on big stages in front of hundreds of persons.
