"Interview - Outer Resistance (4/19/22)"

1. How did you get started with music and how did you develop your sound? Who thought of the name "Outer Resistance" and is there any meaning behind it?

Igor: I started out playing the piano when I was five years old. I took lessons for almost 13 years before picking up the drums and the rest is history, Our sound is deepy rooted from my Metal background. There's no specific meansing behind the "Outer Resistance" name, just thought it'd sound badass haha.

Josh: I started singing while I was in high school. While I was singing show tunes in community theater, I was working on Rock/Metal on the side. I joined Outer Resistance after they were already established.

Ryan: I'm one of those people who get goosebumps when certain songs come on. Once I started playing an instrument, that only amplified. Music has always been just a part of who I am. I believe that "Outer Resistance" can be used to fit any scenario that a listener intends. It's a tool for your ears.

2. What do you want people to take away from your music?

Igor: As long as people can tell that we're passionate about what we play, I'm happy with that. This rest is up for open interpretation.

Josh: I want people to relate to us as human beings, knowing we've all had our struggles, triumphs, and life experiences. I really hope they can feel the music in their bones and souls.

Ryan: An interpretation of being moved from one place to another. Whether that is mentally, physically or spiritually.

3. How would you describe your sound to the average listener?

Igor: Hard Rock with a splash of Metal.

Josh: We are a Progressive Hard Rock group who brings a classic style and twists in a newer Progressive sound. Creating a melodic and heavy ambience that will keep you headbanging while you find yourself singing along.

Ryan: Hard Rock for the songwriter.

4. Who are three bands you’d like to tour with?

Igor: Metallica, Tremonti and Tool.

Josh: I would love to tour with Anberlin, All That Remains and Alter Bridge.

Ryan: Alter Bridge, Volbeat and Metallica.

5. How has Covid affected what you do as a band?

Igor: Covid brought us closer as a brotherhood. It challenged us to be more creative in our music to step out of our comfort zone. Not being able to play live shows really sucks.

Josh: It had set us back in not being able to play live shows until now. It gave us time to fine tune our sound and create some amazing new tunes as a now complete band.

Ryan: The lockdowns definitely slowed our popularity but gave us a chance to write better songs and gain more confidence. It made us better in a way.

6. What’s your take on the current state of Hard Rock?

Igor: My take on the state of current Hard Rock is that it's become more of a popularity contest as opposed to be about the music itself. But I still have faith.

Josh: I think it has withstood the test of time and will continue to be a genre with a strong fanbase and ever evolving sound.

Ryan: I believe it still strives for people who want and crave the music. Just gotta go look for it.

7. What’s the current music scene like locally there in Washington?

Igor: The music scene in Washington is expanding for sure. It's awesome, espe1cially now that things are opening back up. People are more eager than ever to attend and play live music. I love it!

Josh: I think the music scene in Washington is alive and well, just reovering from a two year pandemic.

Ryan: There's a serious lack of venues on this side of the state, especially for Hard Rock. There are some great and fan bands though that really make it fun.

8. What’s your take on the royalties that streaming services pay out to artists?

Igor: I don't know if I'd call it "royalties" anymore because the amount that artists make from streaming is pretty sad. There's nothing "royal" about it IMO but I suppose you have to play the game if you want to get ahead.

Josh: I honestly don't know enough about that to have an educated opinion on the matter of music royalty payouts.

Ryan: I'm still trying to educate myself on the situation. Some very popular bands say it's trash, other's say it's starting to even out, so who knows?

9. What’s next for Outer Resistance?

Igor: The next step for Outer Resistance is to keep recording and releasing music for people to hopefully enjoy as much as we do. And of course to play as many live shows as possible.

Josh: Hopefully touring, more amazing tracks, and music videos. Also hoping to build strong connections and a solid fanbase.

Ryan: Stay active, stay creative, keep engaging with our fans and develop an awesome show!

10. Any shoutouts?

Igor: Shoutout to my wife Ellie for being the most supportive person in my life.

Josh: Shoutouts to all of the amazing bands we've played with. As well as our supportive wives, family and friends who've been there every step of the way.

Ryan: Sharon and my boys for allowing me to pursue a passion. Mom for being my #1 fan. Amir for letting us have a practice space for so long. Paul and Celeste for being our first and best fans. And all the guys in Outer Resistance, we do it together. - From the Depths Entertainment

Outer Resistance is a hard rock band out of Spokane, Washington. A city nestled in the Great Pacific Northwest, the band has their sights strongly set on writing and performing rock music that brings originality and a new flavor to the ever growing music scene. Forming in 2016, the band started with other members interested in being a rock cover band. The idea was disbanded shortly after and the remaining members made the decision to write their own music, thus forming Outer Resistance.

Beginning with a long time friendship shared by Madsen, Vanos, and Karamehic, the band began setting their sights on a new project that would rival the ever-growing music scene. In 2020, the band was joined by a new vocalist, Joshua Bentson, who had moved to the Spokane area from Leavenworth, WA. Fast forward to the summer of 2023, the band welcomed its 5th and final member bassist, Shawn Newberry.

O.R. draws inspiration from greats such as Black Keys, Tool, Killswitch Engage, Breaking Benjamin, Metallica, Led Zeppelin, Foo Fighters, and Alter Bridge but remain original to their own roots. The group is as good as any other group near or far. Look for Outer Resistance to continue making an ever-rising impact.
