Overseas

El rock costarricense no ha dejado de salir de viaje en los últimos años, y el 2014 no se perfila como una excepción. Desde ya, están anunciados varios festivales y conciertos que acogerán propuestas locales en los primeros meses del año.

En marzo, el trío (anteriormente dúo) Ave Negra viajará nuevamente a México, para participar en una nueva edición del Festival Nrmal, en su versión en el estado de Monterrey, que se celebrará del 5 al 9 de ese mes, en el Parque Ferrocarrilero. Otras de las bandas confirmadas al festival son Poolside, Little Jesus y Los Blenders, entre otras.

Por otro lado, ya se anunciaron algunos de los artistas del festival Canadian Music Week, en Canadá, y en el listado figuran tres bandas costarricenses: Overseas, Colornoise y Zòpilot!, las cuales fueron incluidas en el cartel luego de enviar su información a los organizadores del gran concierto.

En el 2013, The Great Wilderness y Alphabetics fueron invitadas a ese mismo festival canadiense, aunque la segunda no puedo efectuar el viaje. The Great Wilderness, por su parte, ya está confirmada para el festival SXSW 2014, en Austin, Texas, Estados Unidos.

Finalmente, el estado de California, en Estados Unidos, recibirá entre el 23 y 25 de mayo al grupo costarricense de reggae latino Ojo de Buey, el cual tocará en el festival California Roots, junto a artistas como Damian Marley, Steel Pulse, Groundation y Pepper, entre otros.

Ojo de Buey ya había viajado a Estados Unidos, pues en octubre se presentó en el North Coast Festival, en Chicago, y en otros recintos de la ciudad. Además, la banda también tocó en países como Panamá y Colombia durante el 2013.

Los cinco grupos que preparan pasaporte para sus respectivos viajes han tenido meses muy productivos: Ave Negra publicó el sencillo Enamorados hace unas semanas; Overseas se reunió tras su desintegración, y presentó el tema Closure ; Colornoise lanzó el disco Polychronic ; Zòpilot! difundió el EP LOT! y Ojo de Buey editó su segundo álbum, Repelente pal' dolor . - La Nacion

La banda compuesta por Ricardo Arias en la voz y guitarra, Alejandro Guerrero en el bajo, Luis Diego Alpízar y Daniel Agüero en las guitarras, y Jose Alberto Delgado presentó en diciembre pasado su primer EP “O Captain! My Captain!”

Compuesto por siete temas originales -más un bonus acústico- el EP cuenta con la colaboración Ben Kotin -vocalista de Such Gold- en la canción "Shaking the Soda" y de Marcos Monnerat -vocalista de TMIC- en "Sake of Sanity".

El disco fue grabado en Costa Rica por el mismo Monnerat y masterizado en Estados Unidos por Mass Giorgini, quien ha trabajado con bandas como Rise Against, Alkaline Trio y Anti-Flag, entre otras.

El título del disco fue inspirado por el poema homónimo del escritor norteamericano Walt Whitman y los artes estuvieron a cargo de David Cubero del Estudio ésm

“O Captain! My Captain!” se editó en formato digital en India, Macedonia, Alemania, Estados Unidos, Canadá y Australia, y -en éstos 3 últimos- también se editó en vinilo de 12". Cada país tiene un color diferente de vinil y como regalo a quienes lo adquieren, éste contiene un código de descarga digital.

Ya te enterarás de los detalles por ellos mismos, pero te contamos que por ahora Overseas tiene como meta la grabación de un nuevo disco de larga duración y están trabajando en una gira internacional para el mes de mayo de éste año.

¡Chivos! Los nacionales se estarán presentando en el concierto de los Bichos del Underground II, el próximo 19 de enero en el Bar The Wall en Heredia y estarán el sábado 16 de febrero, junto a The Movement In Codes y Crimson Noise, en Casbah Rock Bar (Antiguo Sultan Barrio la California).

Junto a la presentación del EP, la banda también lanzó el video del tema "Charleston", dirigido por Sergio Gutiérrez. El video contiene imágenes en vivo de la presentación con Rise Against y parte del proceso de ensayos y grabación del EP a mediados del 2012.

Overseas is a five piece Punk Rock / Melodic Hardcore band from Costa Rica. The band was formed in 2012 and they’ve already had shows with bands such as Rise Against, The Lawrence Arms, Counterpunch and Prevenge.

My Captain!” features guest vocals from the band Such Gold (United States), and it was released on 12” vinyl by Quote Your Pulse Records (United States), Pavones Records (Canada) and Pee Records(Australia), while the digital version was released by No Panic! It was recorded in Costa Rica by the engineer Marcos Monnerat and mastered in the United States by the engineer Mass Giorgini (Rise Against, Alkaline Trio, Anti-Flag). It has a total of seven tracks, plus two acoustic bonus.

While the aforementioned bands do shine through in the sound of Overseas, including guest vocals from Such Gold's Ben Kotin, they still retain a fair bit of the traditional Fat Wreck pop punk sound readers may be more familiar with ala Strung Out. Refreshingly the vocals have a very natural sound to them with very little studio manipulation are highly likeable and listenable. For a release and a band I knew nothing about until I received it in the mail, this is a pretty cool find and very promising release.

Tras casi un año de sesiones, prácticas y ensayos, el conjunto costarrisense, Overseas, está pronto a debutar su primer material profesional, ‘’O Captain, My Captain!’’, el cual viene recién llegando de tierras norteamericanas en donde fue remasterizado por el productor musical, Mass Giorgini [Screeching Weasel, Smoking Popes, The Queers, Alkaline Trio].


Para adelantar un poco el asunto, el acto punk pop que recién agregó una tercera guitarra a su juego [Daniel Aguero que toca como en 50 bandas más], ha subido a la red y compartido con nosotros y AMP Magazine el trailer oficial #1 del esfuerzo en su resultado final. En el adelanto que supera los 4 minutos y que se adjunta abajo de esta nota pueden escuchar por completo una de las 8 piezas que trae el disco naranja; se trata del upbeat, ‘’Chaleston’’, el cual toma referencia de la escena más famosa del filme clásico de 1939, ”Gone with the Wind”.

‘’Específicamente cuando Rehd le dice a Scarlett: “Honestly my dear, I don’t give a damn”. Entonces el nombre de la pieza habla sobre donde va uno después de que todo se termina. Tener un norte claro, y no quedarse estancado por algo que no existe’’ explica su vocalista y compositor Ricardo Arias, quien comenta que la mayoría de canciones del disco corto modelan en un corte progresista y positivo.

Sobre la pieza él agrega:

‘’’Es de una experiencia personal, de una ruptura que pasó, y habla básicamente de esa fase donde todo va en downhill, pero visto más desde un punto de vista donde es uno el que pone el ‘stop’. No es un ride como de sentarse a llorar, sino como de “ok, esto es suficiente y di, como uno nunca piensa que las cosas terminen de cierta manera y como la otra persona parece un completo extraño/a’’

‘’O Captain, My Captain’’, que toma inspiración de pila del poeta-periodista norteamericano Walt Whitman, y que además cuenta con la colaboración del líder de Such Gold, Ben Kotin, en el track 5 [Shaking the Soda] será debutado en su totalidad en octubre 22 a través de un stream exclusivo de AMP Magazine, sin embargo, el disco físico no llegará a tiendas hasta el 7 de diciembre. Será distribuido en vinilo en Estados Unidos, Canadá y Australia, en CD en India y Costa Rica, mientras que Alemania y Macedonia se pondrá legalmente en formato digital. El vinilo será de 12 pulgadas y cada país tendrá su propio color, además, vendrán con un código especial para que la gente lo pueda descargar en version digital ‘deluxe’, la cual traerá consigo una canción extra.

Entre tanto, la banda tiene agendada una serie de eventos locales para promocionar este lanzamiento. Además de las previamente anunciadas citas con Los Perez el 26 de este mes, Double D de México el 4 de noviembre, y Rise Against el 11 del mismo mes, la banda tocará al lado de los canadienses, Prevenge. El grupo de punk rock tocará luego con Pennywise en Club Peppers.

Actualmente, Overseas, está en proceso de composición de nuevas canciones, las cuales eventualmente formarán parte de un split con una banda estadounidense, aún no revelada. De acuerdo a su bajista, Alejandro Guerrero, los nuevos temas están tomando un rumbo totalmente diferente a lo que escucharán en el EP. ‘’Es un tanto más punk rock, pero no se a que suena’’. Asimismo, está entre los planes producir un larga duración para el 2013.

La banda de de San José Costa Rica, Overseas, ha tirado un pequeño fragmento de lo que podrán escuchar en las 6 canciones que tendrá su primer EP profesional, el cual está aun siendo trabajado por el líder de The Movement In Codes y ingeniero de sonido, Marcos Monnerat, quien anteriormente ha trabajado con conjuntos como Billy The Kid, Alphabetics y Bufonic.

En ”O Captain! My Captain!”, que aguarda su salida en un par de meses, podrán toparse con un disco rápido y agresivo de punk-pop, en la mejor línea de bandas norteamericanas como Such Gold y Set Your Goals, con la siempre influencia de otros géneros y estilos que también son escuchados por sus integrantes.

Entre tanto, Overseas, se presentará el próximo lunes en el concierto de Truth Through Fight al lado de un montón de bandas locales, y más adelante lo hará con grupos como The Wonder Years y Rise Against.

OVERSEAS, formed in 2011 and debuts with an 8-track EP (one time we would have said LP) aptly titled "O Capitain! My Capitain!".

El estreno discografico de la banda nacional Overseas va con los tacos de frente. El EP, O Captain! My Captain! , no se contento con salir en vinil de 12 pulgadas solo en Costa Rica, sino que tambien fue editado en otras fronteras.

Los sellos Quote Your Pulse Records (Estados Unidos), Pavones Records (Canada;) y Pee Records (Australia) le dieron un espaldarazo a la banda tica al editar y distribuir el material en sendos paises, mientras que por estos lares el acetato ya se puede adquirir en los conciertos de la banda y en tiendas Insomnio.

El disco corto fue presentado oficialmente el pasado 15 de diciembre y contiene siete canciones mas un bonus en formato acustico. Entre estas aparecen Last Word, Call It a Day, Bulldozer y Charlestone , que ya cuenta con un videoclip.

El trabajo fue grabado por el ingeniero de sonido Marcos Monnerat y masterizado en Estados Unidos por Mass Giorgini quien ha trabajado con reconocidas bandas como Alkaline Trio y Anti-Flag.

O Captain! My Captain! salio; poco mas de un año despues del nacimiento d el grupo de punk rock y hardcore meodico.

Durante sus dias de existencia, ya ha compartido escenario con bandas internacionales como Rise Against y Prevenge.

Actualmente el conjunto estaintegrado por Ricardo Arias (voz), Alejandro Guerrero (bajo), Luis Diego Alpizar y Daniel Aguero (guitarra) asi como Jose Alberto Delgado (bateria).

En el EP tambien aparecen como invitados Ben Kotin, quien es cantante de la agrupacion norteamericana Such Gold, ademas del mismo Monnerat, vocalista de The Movement in Codes .

Apoyo foaneo. Overseas llamo la atencion de los sellos que finalmente decidieron impulsar la distribucion del vinil en diferentes fronteras. Fueron esas mismas disqueras las que le recomendaron al grupo editar el material en acetato de 12 pulgadas, una tendencia que parece estar tomando un segundo respiro en el mercado musical.

El estreno discografico de la banda nacional Overseas va con los tacos de frente. El EP, O Captain! My Captain! , no se contento con salir en vinil de 12 pulgadas solo en Costa Rica, sino que tambien fue editado en otras fronteras.

Los sellos Quote Your Pulse Records (Estados Unidos), Pavones Records (Canada;) y Pee Records (Australia) le dieron un espaldarazo a la banda tica al editar y distribuir el material en sendos paises, mientras que por estos lares el acetato ya se puede adquirir en los conciertos de la banda y en tiendas Insomnio.

El disco corto fue presentado oficialmente el pasado 15 de diciembre y contiene siete canciones mas un bonus en formato acustico. Entre estas aparecen Last Word, Call It a Day, Bulldozer y Charlestone , que ya cuenta con un videoclip.

El trabajo fue grabado por el ingeniero de sonido Marcos Monnerat y masterizado en Estados Unidos por Mass Giorgini quien ha trabajado con reconocidas bandas como Alkaline Trio y Anti-Flag.

O Captain! My Captain! salio; poco mas de un año despues del nacimiento d el grupo de punk rock y hardcore meodico.

Durante sus dias de existencia, ya ha compartido escenario con bandas internacionales como Rise Against y Prevenge.

Actualmente el conjunto estaintegrado por Ricardo Arias (voz), Alejandro Guerrero (bajo), Luis Diego Alpizar y Daniel Aguero (guitarra) asi como Jose Alberto Delgado (bateria).

En el EP tambien aparecen como invitados Ben Kotin, quien es cantante de la agrupacion norteamericana Such Gold, ademas del mismo Monnerat, vocalista de The Movement in Codes .

Apoyo foaneo. Overseas llamo la atencion de los sellos que finalmente decidieron impulsar la distribucion del vinil en diferentes fronteras. Fueron esas mismas disqueras las que le recomendaron al grupo editar el material en acetato de 12 pulgadas, una tendencia que parece estar tomando un segundo respiro en el mercado musical.

“Not settling for less when you can go further and walk the extra mile”. Let me start my bit of opening-blabbing quoting a line off a reply below by OVERSEAS.
It's true that many bands are happy to settle for less (and this could work whether that's their goal) but I'm in my view all bands that walk the extra mile and work their asses off to break boundaries (being them geographic, cultural, whatever...), because of their passion and driven by heart, are the ones that make the plus in the hardcore punk music scene. There's nothing here about money and the easy fame but it's all about staying together, sharing experiences, playing the music you love and bring it to as many people as possible.
San Jose, Costa Rica, Overseas is a some-months-over-a year-old melodic HC-punk quintet
that just released their debut EP “O Captain! My Captain!” and they definitely seems to do this for the right cause. They're planning to tour Europe in 2013 and No Panic! records made their EP available on digital format in Europe.
Singer Rick and bass player (band manager) Alejandro replied our questions about these recent happenings (they are our new “hot new band to check out”) and much more in this pretty lengthy but definitely worth a reading interview. Read on.

gan: First off, I wanna give you the chance to introduce your band to our readers. Please feed us with the basics on OVERSEAS: your age, who is in, where you from, when you came together and some of the goals you set for your baby.

RICK: Hey there I’m Rick. I’m 22 and I play guitar and sing for Overseas. I think the first time we talked about putting up a band was back in September 2011. I think my main motivation to start with the band was to play music that I love regardless of what anyone would think of it.
ALEJANDRO: Hey. I’m Alejandro, I play bass and I’m the oldest member in the band, I’m 34. The other members are Daniel (guitar, 23), Diego (guitar, 25) and Joe (drums, 27). We’re all from Costa Rica, a very small and touristic country from Central America; except for Daniel, who was born in Colombia, but he’s been living in Costa Rica since he was a child, so he’s Costa Rican now.

gan: So, you guys hail from San Jose, Costa Rica. As I wrote in the news item about the release of your debut EP, your country is not one of those places one think of when it comes to talk about hardcore punk music. What are some of the bands from your country you would suggest us checking out and what's your local scene like?

RICK: Yeah, we get that a lot, but when you think about it, Costa Rica is quite a tiny piece of land so I totally understand where the thought comes from. I would say that all of the bands down here are pretty good, everyone is trying to have their own sound and most of them are really nice kids and friends of ours, it’s hard to pick one or two but I have to give huge credit to my friends in “Niño Koi”, for lovers of instrumental and trippy stuff, check these guys out ASAP. Also Billy The Kid, who have been doing an amazing job touring overseas; but these are just two bands from a lot of amazing musicians doing great shit. About the scene, well, I’ll just say that it’s not as solid as it could be, but it only takes a spark to start a fire.
ALEJANDRO: As Rick says, Billy the Kid is right now the most international band in Costa Rica, they’ve been touring Europe and South America for years now, releasing great records and videoclips, which is important for a band that wants to keep certain level in order to compete with all the other touring bands from other countries. But we also have other great bands in Costa Rica that don’t tour much, but keep working hard locally, like Direcciones (Hardcore Punk), Bulletproof (Melodic Hardcore), No Resolution (Thrash influenced Melodic Hardcore), Adaptados (Punk Rock), xEl Valor de Lucharx (Oldschool Hardcore) and my favorite above all: THE MOVEMENT IN CODES, which plays a mix of Punk Rock and alternative rock that sounds really amazing. Their singer is our sound engineer, by the way.

gan: Talking about your band name, how did you come up with it? And what it means to you?

RICK: I can’t quite remember how we came up with it, but I’m pretty sure that I speak for the five of us when I say that “Overseas” is a philosophy when it comes to the way of doing things with our band. It has to do with not settling for less when you can go further and walk the extra mile, we’re definitely not looking forward to be a big fish in a small pond while there’s a whole sea for us to conquer.
ALEJANDRO: That’s right, and it’s funny because when we first started talking to graphic designers about the art for our Ep, they all came with sea related ideas, with ships, sailors and octopuses, and that is something we don't want to be related to, the name Overseas has a different meaning to us.
