On the surface, Pablo Schmitt is strict, linear, a seeker of facts. To talk to him is to hear about his black-and-white world of that which is true and that which is otherwise. But somewhere deeper, beyond the straight lines, lies the kaleidoscope through which music occurs to Pablo, taking the hard edges of reality and making them beautiful, strange, and yet still familiar.
When Pablo was 14 his cousin Omar chanced to teach him a few simple chords on the guitar. Instantly, Pablo was hooked, and took to practicing hours on end, teaching himself tirelessly to create music from the instrument. Dreams of fame and stardom were secondary to his growing desire to own the sounds he forged.
A few years later, Pablo joined the obligatory bands, indulging in hard rock and massive guitar riffs. Talk of "making it big" began to sound possible, even probable, and he began to work even harder, teaching himself to arrange melodies, studying theory, and learning how to enhance his music using technology.
His perspective is different now, more mature, but the music is still very much alive inside him. He calls himself a realist now, and the term certainly fits the music he writes today.
The charmed "here-and-now" of Pablo's world is infused into his melodies, folded through the layers, lending strength, whispering stories. These whispers form unmistakably clear images in the mind of the listener. Perhaps these images are memories from Pablo's adventures, springing forth. Perhaps they are the life that music would take if it had solid form.
