Paddle to the Sea

 Montréal, Quebec, CAN
BandAlternativeRock

With a sound that is hard to pigeonhole into a typical musical genre, Paddle to the Sea plays loud, fast, melodic post-punk songs with echoes of the past and with an unblinking, stoic eye towards the looming Trump-driven dystopian future. If interrogated by the CIA at a black Ops site somewhere in Albania at gunpoint, Philip Shearing would say that they play nugaze, a sort of hybrid of shoegaze and 1990s grunge.

Biography

Paddle to the Sea is a 3 piece nugaze band from Montreal, Quebec. Their self-released debut LP “Insert Home Delete End” released in April 2016 was produced by Robert Martins (The Fuzzy Bees/The 222s) and could be likened to power pop with allusions to the Flannel-clad grunge days of the early 90s.

PTTS most recently played Montreal Fringe Festival 2017 on the outdoor stage on June 9th, 2017.

They released a new single "Arrow Song" and a B-side "Skipping Stone" on digital platform Bandcamp on the opening day of Canadian Music Week 2017 and played a CMW showcase on Tuesday, April 18th at Bovine Sex Club in Toronto, Ontario. Their new single and b-side will be released on Spotify, iTunes, and other platforms later on in 2017 along with a second LP still being recorded at Sound Module with Producer Fern Bouie (The Blushing Brides).

They have appeared on Concordia Radio (CJLO 1690AM, The Go Go Radio Magic Show) numerous times in the past few years and were interviewed on notable zine "Forget the Box" (http://www.forgetthebox.net) and also had a profile piece in the Montreal Times (http://www.mtltimes.ca) along with positive track reviews from Juliette Jagger on her personal music blog "A Journal of Musical Things."

PTTS has shared a stage with notable acts such as Rusty, The Nils, Pet Sun, The 222s, Lightbulb
Alley, Pussy Stench, The Extroverts, Lauren Spike, Bucky Harris, The Barrel Heads, Rival, Mooch, Open Air, Jon Cohen Experimental, and Dearly Beloved.

They also founded their own music festival "Basin Fest" to celebrate the bands that share their jam space building on Basin Street in Griffintown (http://www.basinfest.com) and plan to have 20+ bands play this year's festival in November 2017.

Philip Shearing (The Dissonants/Chemical Swings) handles lead vocals and guitar and Shawn Murray plays drums and also performs live vocals. Former Arcade Fire drummer Dane Mills appeared on the debut LP.

Lyrics

Moon

Written By: Philip Shearing

The moon made of tissue / the clouds made of wine
your elegance fits you / you wear it with pride
I wish I could kiss you / and make you my bride
but that's not the issue / the borders were lies
I took it for granted / that you would agree
This thing that we planted / a terrible seed
The landscape was slanted / diagonal trees
I do as commanded / cause I still believe

CHORUS
I write from the soul / I write to feel better / I write for the distant friend who's lost

You're funny I'm ugly / how will we survive?
No you never shoved me / you threw that punch blind
You're certainly lovely / our lives intertwined
so now that we're nothing / write my novel's last line

CHORUS

EXUNT

Verity

Written By: Philip Shearing

Islands for a week / Verity come back to me (repeat)
Sing my soul to sleep / Verity come back to me (repeat)
Listen darling / to these words on my tongue
silver starling / we can live in the sun
Climbing towards the peak / Verity come back to me (repeat)
Your eyes are a dream / Verity come back to me (repeat)
Chorus again.
