"Review of track "Waste of Time""

"There is something endearing about 'Waste of Time' from Montreal post-punk trio Paddle To The Sea. They feel like reminiscing with old friends while the songs that have since become memories play on the stereo in lo-fi." - A Journal of Musical Things

"CMW Preview: An Interview with Paddle to the Sea"

The Canadian music community can be pretty close-knit. For instance, did you know that Phil Shearing, singer/guitarist from Paddle to the Sea, once had Hollerado play on his lawn while on tour. He passed a hat around while his friend gave them smores. This is just one example the comradery of Canadian bands, helping each other out.

More than just being about the music community, Canadian Music Week is an expression of how healthy, vibrant and eclectic our homegrown music industry is — and one of those local bands that stands out when we talk about Canadian Music is Paddle to the Sea. Perhaps one of the hardest working bands I know.

Paddle to the Sea features: the aforementioned Philip Shearing (vocals and guitar), Jeff Bulgarelli (vocals and bass), and Shawn Murray on drums and vocals.

The three-piece just released Insert Home Delete End a very impressive album filled with power-pop and grinding grunge. You can describe their music as a reinvention of the raw 90s sound. Give a listen to Castaway and Butter You Up.

Paddle to the Sea will be taking their wild horse and pony show to the Bovine Sex Club in Toronto, for a Tuesday April 18th show with will also feature: Lauren Spike, The Huaraches and The Extorverts. I had a chance to speak with them before they left for the show.

"'Paddle to the Sea' heading to Toronto for CMW"

Montreal’s ‘Paddle to the Sea’, a 3 piece nu-gaze band is getting ready to showcase their stuff at this year’s Canadian Music Week in Toronto on April 18th at the Bovine Sex Club. They are in studio now recording two new songs – a single, ‘Arrow Song’ and ‘Skipping Stone’ a B-side, which will be digitally released on Bandcamp (http://paddletothesea.bandcamp.com) on the opening day of CMW and then will be released on Spotify, iTunes and other platforms later on in 2017, along with a second LP being recorded at Sound Module with Producer Fern Bouie (The Blushing Brides).

Paddle to the Sea has a sound that is hard to pigeonhole into a typical musical genre, but is best described by Philip Shearing (lead vocals and guitar) as ‘loud, fast, melodic post-punk songs with echoes of the past and with an unblinking, stoic eye towards the looming Trump-driven dystopian future’.

Their self-released debut LP ‘Insert Home Delete End’ was released in April 2016 and produced by Robert Martins (The Fuzzy Bees/The 222s) with an appearance by former Arcade Fire drummer Dane Mills, and could be ‘likened to power pop with allusions to the Flannel-clad grunge days of the early 90s’.

PTTS has shared the stage with notable acts such as Rusty, The Nils, Pet Sun, The 222s, Lightbulb Alley, Bucky Harris, The Barrel Heads, Rival, Mooch, Open Air, and Dearly Beloved. They also founded their own music festival ‘Basin Fest’ in 2016 to celebrate the bands sharing their jam space in Griffintown.

“Basin fest aims to capture the DIY spirit of the bands who share Basin Street Studios as their rehearsal space, their recording studio and their sonic home away from home… it is a collective light beam to the cosmos that we hope will go on forever,” explained Philip. (Applications for submissions for the 2017 edition can be found at: http://www.basinfest.com).

Philip Shearing (The Dissonants/Chemical Swings) is joined by Jeff Bulgarelli (Trash/Young Adults) on bass and vocals and Shawn Murray on drums and some vocals.

They have already played in Toronto at the Horseshoe Tavern and shared the stage with the likes of ‘Rusty’ a Canadian alternative rock band (nominated for a Juno Award in 1996). It’s the band’s first invitation to Canadian Music Week, one of the premier music conferences and festivals in North America, and an opportunity to showcase their music – and show the world they have what it takes to rock it all the way. Montreal is rooting for Paddle to the Sea, loud and fast! - Montreal Times

"Review of latest single "Arrow Song""

"From Montreal-based Nu-gaze trio, Paddle To The Sea, “Arrow Song” pairs the sort of drudgey, punched-up power-punk you’d expect from a GOB song with the doom and gloom of classic Ian Curtis." - Juliette Jagger, April 17th, 2017 - A Journal of Musical Things

Bio

Paddle to the Sea is a 3 piece nugaze band from Montreal, Quebec. Their self-released debut LP “Insert Home Delete End” released in April 2016 was produced by Robert Martins (The Fuzzy Bees/The 222s) and could be likened to power pop with allusions to the Flannel-clad grunge days of the early 90s.

PTTS most recently played Montreal Fringe Festival 2017 on the outdoor stage on June 9th, 2017.

They released a new single "Arrow Song" and a B-side "Skipping Stone" on digital platform Bandcamp on the opening day of Canadian Music Week 2017 and played a CMW showcase on Tuesday, April 18th at Bovine Sex Club in Toronto, Ontario. Their new single and b-side will be released on Spotify, iTunes, and other platforms later on in 2017 along with a second LP still being recorded at Sound Module with Producer Fern Bouie (The Blushing Brides).

With a sound that is hard to pigeonhole into a typical musical genre, Paddle to the Sea plays loud,
fast, melodic post-punk songs with echoes of the past and with an unblinking, stoic eye towards the looming Trump-driven dystopian future. If interrogated by the CIA at a black Ops site somewhere in Albania at gunpoint, Philip Shearing would say that they play nugaze, a sort of hybrid of shoegaze and 1990s grunge.

They have appeared on Concordia Radio (CJLO 1690AM, The Go Go Radio Magic Show) numerous times in the past few years and were interviewed on notable zine "Forget the Box" (http://www.forgetthebox.net) and also had a profile piece in the Montreal Times (http://www.mtltimes.ca) along with positive track reviews from Juliette Jagger on her personal music blog "A Journal of Musical Things."

PTTS has shared a stage with notable acts such as Rusty, The Nils, Pet Sun, The 222s, Lightbulb
Alley, Pussy Stench, The Extroverts, Lauren Spike, Bucky Harris, The Barrel Heads, Rival, Mooch, Open Air, Jon Cohen Experimental, and Dearly Beloved.

They also founded their own music festival "Basin Fest" to celebrate the bands that share their jam space building on Basin Street in Griffintown (http://www.basinfest.com) and plan to have 20+ bands play this year's festival in November 2017.

Philip Shearing (The Dissonants/Chemical Swings) handles lead vocals and guitar and Shawn Murray plays drums and also performs live vocals. Former Arcade Fire drummer Dane Mills appeared on the debut LP.
