Bio

P.A. Dutch mixes rock, blues, punk and funk with edgy lyrics to create a sound that is best described as “dance rock”, and the style is all their own. They have roots in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (their name a tribute to the local Amish heritage) but the band calls both America and Cairns in Far North Queensland Australia home. When last in the recording studio, the band (P.A. Dutch - songwriter/vocals, John Riley - drums, Glenn Strother – guitar, Corey Hall – guitar/synth, and Dave Busch - bass) recorded a huge collection of original music that is now in production. P.A. Dutch will be introducing it to crowds in the States this spring, releasing a CD in early summer of 2011 and bringing the music back to Australia later this year.

Huge collection of music is an understatement. The band said good-bye to everyday life and retreated to the Junglegym compound which sits nestled into the jungle hillside of tropical North Queensland. They spent six months (in 2009 and 2010) immersed in writing, playing and recording. What came out of the Junglegym sessions was an unbelievable 55+ original songs comprising four albums in multiple genres – LONESOME PATROL (pop/rock), SLOWLY RUSTED (indie rock), RED LETTER GIRL (punk) and MEMPHIS (blues). This freshman band’s live show plays like a greatest hits album. Remarkably, the sound remains cohesive from one song to the next - and audiences are responding to it.

Dutch attributes much of the appeal and to the process and the mix of players and explains why this music is not to be pigeonholed.

“As makers of music we crossed and re-crossed that indefinable artistic line in the sand to make some stuff that we can be proud of - art without compromise, art that is paid for in full.”

“We took the time to explore the sound in the studio and on stage. The time that the band spent in Australia performing and recording was as good as it gets. We knew we had an amazing chance to toss out the rules and work with what felt right to us. We are a little bit country, and a little bit bluesy, we all grew up on classic rock, and there are a lot of fiery personalities which lends itself to an aggressive punk rock feel. All of us really appreciate pop music, too. Add in our own personal interests, plus the same one person being in charge of the idea base, and the music became a dynamic representation of who we all are. I think that’s why it all sounds cohesive even though it’s varied. We all enjoy playing a whole night of any one of those genres, and also enjoy mixing it up and letting the feel of the night and the crowd have an influence.”

Intelligent songs about complex subjects remain approachable because they are honest, inviting, melodic and besides that, they rock. Think Nick Cave, Ben Folds, Wilco and Moby.

Watch for SLOWLY RUSTED on CD Summer of 2011.
