Biography

P.A. DUTCH PERSONAL BIO

If you haven't heard the music of P.A. Dutch, get ready. You are in for a treat. Few songwriters display this kind of range, whether in style, subject or genre. The gritty, distinctive delivery of P.A. Dutch will capture your heart and your attention.

"Unlike a lot of my contemporaries who have played music since they were children, it gripped me instead like some kind of religion in my late twenties, and all the energy that I had previously spent on other interests has become completely focused onto this one singular thing; the study of writing and the writing of songs."

The songs of P.A. Dutch have a unique ability to be old and new simultaneously.

“I feel strongly that being a good songwriter is not about starting when you are young and learning to write songs, it’s about being a student of life and learning how to translate very subtle feelings onto a piece of paper, having the courage to try it and the tenacity to keep at it until you have some control. One song doesn’t make you a writer, nor does one album. I have often thought that if I can just get the whole way around reality, then I can stop writing. If I can treat every idea that humans encounter, then I will have completed some insane mission.”

If the music of P.A. Dutch begins in the country rock genre (TWO DAYS), then it comfortably runs rampant into blues (MEMPHIS), indie-rock (IMPRACTICAL BELL), punk (RED LETTER GIRL), rockabilly (TREES CATCH FIRE), folk (ROSES), pop (SOMEBODY'S CRADLE), alternative country (MY HEART SPEAKS) and Americana (BONA DEA).

“I’m amazed each and every time at how during the writing process the song was the size of a stadium with all the characters and the whole plot and the entire earth within its bounds, but at the end, when the regular world is once again the object of your focus, it’s hard to even remember how big the song was. It achieves this very personal type of rightness where it almost disappears into being simple again.”

The whole package is deceptively simple.

John Lennon

Written By: P.A. Dutch

JOHN LENNON

AIN'T NOBODY TAKING FANCY PICTURES, WHEN I FELL IN LOVE
AIN'T NOBODY WITH A MICROPHONE, WHEN I’D HAD ENOUGH
AIN'T NOBODY PICKING UP THE SCRAPS, THAT I LEAVE BEHIND
MAKING LITTLE BOOKS OF ALL THE STEPS I’VE HAD TO CLIMB

Chorus
BUT, I STILL CRY WHEN THE TEARS CALL MY NAME
AND I BLEED LIKE A WORKING MAN CUT IN A VEIN
AND I ONLY SMELL THE ROSES WHEN I CATCH MYSELF
MISSING HALF OF MY LIFE
AND DID YOU SEE THE WAY JOHN LENNON LOVED HIS WIFE

AIN’T NOBODY THERE TO HEAR THE THINGS THAT I SAY UNDER MY BREATH
BUT, THERE AIN’T NOTHING THAT I SAY COMING BACK TO ME AGAIN
AIN'T NOBODY ASKING ME FOR THINGS, THAT AREN’T MINE TO GIVE
AIN'T NOBODY LOOKING MY WAY FOR A BETTER WAY TO LIVE

Chorus

Bridge
WHOA, OH, DON’T YOU LOVE THE WAY THAT SOME THINGS GO
DON’T FLOWERS LOVE THE RAIN
WHOA, OH, I GUESS I WANT TO KNOW
THAT SOME THINGS NEVER CHANGE

AIN'T NOBODY GONNA FOLLOW ME, WHEN I WANT TO BE ALONE
NOBODY THAT I DON’T KNOW IS GONNA CALL ME ON THE TELEPHONE
I AM INVISIBLE, AND I DON’T KNOW HOW I FEEL ABOUT THAT
I AM INVISIBLE, AND I DON’T KNOW HOW I FEEL ABOUT THAT

Chorus

Somebody's Cradle

Written By: P.A. Dutch

SOMEBODY’S CRADLE

I KNOW ALL
I NEED’S A PHONE CALL
BUT I’M SO SMALL
I CAN’T BE SEEN

AND THOUGH ALL
MY TIME HAS RUN AWAY
AT THE END OF THE DAY
I STILL FEEL THE NEED TO BE
LOVED, AND THE NEED TO BE

Chorus
SOMEBODYS OWNER
SOMEBODYS SLAVE
SOMEBODYS CRADLE
AND SOMEBODYS GRAVE

AND NOW I’VE DONE IT ALL AGAIN
PUT THE PAPER TO THE PEN
LOST TRACK OF WHERE I’VE BEEN
IT HAPPENS SO FAST

BUT LOOK AT WHAT I’VE FOUND
CAN’T BELIEVE YOU’RE STILL AROUND
AND YOU LISTEN TO THE SOUND
DO YOU FEEL THE NEED TO BE
LOVED, AND THE NEED TO BE

Chorus

I KNOW THIS
I NEED A FOCUS
A SLOW KISS
NOT A PRACTICE ROUND

AND AFTER ALL I’VE DONE
I CAN’T SAY THAT I’VE WON
MORE THAN MY SHARE
AND THE NEED TO BE

Chorus

Rock Overlooking the Garden

Written By: P.A. Dutch

ROCK OVERLOOKING THE GARDEN

THERE IS A ROCK OVERLOOKING THE GARDEN
THE GARDEN CARVED IN THE HILL
THERE IS A ROCK OVERLOOKING THE GARDEN
THE GARDEN WITH THE DAFFODIL
THERE IS A ROCK OVERLOOKING THE GARDEN
IN THE HEAT IT GIVES ME RELIEF
AND WHEN THE SUN SETS, AND YOU LIE ON TOP
IT STILL FEELS WARM UNDERNEATH `
OH YEAH

THE ROCK OVERLOOKING THE GARDEN
NEVER DID HAVE A NAME
JUST THE ROCK OVER LOOKING THE GARDEN
AND MAY IT ALWAYS REMAIN
THROUGH ALL THE SEASONS AND THE CHANGING LEAVES
THROUGH ALL THE JOYS AND ALL THE GRIEVES
THROUGH ALL THESE FADING MEMORIES
SAY YOU’LL STAY HERE WITH ME
OH YEAH

THE ROCK OVERLOOKING THE GARDEN
SAW MY VERY FIRST KISS
THE ROCK OVERLOOKING THE GARDEN
SAW ALL MY HITS AND MISSES
THE ROCK OVERLOOKING THE GARDEN
GOT PUSHED TO THE BACK OF MY MIND
WHEN I RECEIVED MY PARDON
WHEN I CONCIEVED MY CRIME
OH YEAH

THE ROCK OVERLOOKING THE GARDEN
WAITS FOR ME WHEN I COME HOME
AND SO I RUN MY HANDS OVER IT AND HOLD IT CLOSE
I MAY BE CRAZY, BUT I THINK IT KNOWS
SING TO IT SOFTLY, TELL IT A JOKE
WASH IT DOWN WITH WATER AND SOAP
LIGHT A CANDLE AND STICK IT IN THE HOLE
LIKE I DID SUCH A LONG LONG TIME AGO
YEAH

Poets and Priests

Written By: P.A. Dutch

POETS AND PRIESTS

IF I CAME TO YOU HAGGARD AND WORN
MY BODY BROKE AND MY LOVIN TORN
AND LAY MYSELF DOWN LORD, WHAT WOULD YOU BE?
WOULD YOU BE COLD OR LOVING TO ME?

LOVER COME QUICK, UP ON YOUR FEET
I GOT A FOOLS DEADLINE TO MEET
THE BUZZARDS OF LOVE, ARE SHAKING ME DOWN
I’M GOING UNDER NAKED, I’M STARTIN TO DROWN

Chorus
POETS AND PRIESTS ARE YOU WITH ME TONIGHT?
ARE MY LOVERS WORDS GONNA PUT UP A FIGHT?
MY SIGHTS ARE SET ON MY MAIDEN FAIR
WIND BLOW UP MY SAILS AND CARRY ME THERE

TWO IDEAS THEY MEET IN THE NIGHT
THEY OPEN UP OR THEY PUT UP A FIGHT
THE HEAT, FROM THE FIRE, IT WONT LET ME BE
IM SLEEPING AWAKE, AND I’M LOCKED UP FREE

HARK NOW HEAR THE ANGELS SING
GOING IN CHECK, A QUEEN TO A KING
IT TAKES A FOOL TO LOVE, IT’S EASY TO SEE
IF IT TAKES A FOOL TO LOVE YOU, THEN LET IT BE ME

Chorus

THIS WORLD CAN SHAKE THE TRUTH FROM YOUR SOUL
IT CAN TAKE YOU APART, BUT, IT CANT MAKE YOU WHOLE
ITS HARD ENOUGH LIVING, TO DO IT ALONE
YOU’RE MY BREATH, YOU’RE MY EYES, YOU’RE MY LOVER
SO CARRY ME HOME

IF I CAME TO YOU HAGGARD AND WORN
MY BODY BROKE AND MY LOVIN TORN
AND LAY MYSELF DOWN LORD, WHAT WOULD YOU BE?
WOULD YOU BE COLD OR LOVING TO ME?

Kansas City

KANSAS CITY

CORN FIELDS IN THE SUMMER TIME
MAYBE KNEE HIGH IN JULY
SHOOTING BIRDS IN THE BACK YARD
NEVER STOPPED TO WONDER WHY

A KISS WAS JUST A KISS
CAUSE LOVE IT DIDN’T GO THAT DEEP
AND IT’S HARD TO KNOW WHAT TO THROW AWAY
AND ITS HARD TO K NOW WHAT TO KEEP

Chorus
OOOH OOOH KANSAS CITY GIRL
I WISH I WERE COMING HOME
CAUSE I WANT TO FEEL SOMETHING I KNOW
INSTEAD OF JUST
FEELING ALONE

COUPLE DOGS COUPLE WOMEN
COUPLE FRIENDS LOST ON THE DICE
MY WILDEST IMAGINATION
COULDN’T HAVE DREAMED OF THIS LIFE

I’M HAUNTED BY THE FEELING
THAT THINGS ARE OUT OF HAND
WHAT THE CHILD IN ME DON’T WANT TO SEE
THE MAN IN ME NEEDS TO UNDERSTAND

Chorus

TEN THOUSAND MILES
BETWEEN ME AND YESTERDAY
AND NOW I’M LOOKING BACK
WHEN I USED TO LOOK AWAY

PRETTY GIRL IN THE MARKETPLACE
I DON’T SPEAK HER TONGUE
GOT TEN DOLLARS AND A SOUVENIR
CAN YOU MAKE ME FEEL YOUNG?

Chorus

Impractical Bell

Written By: P.A. Dutch

IMPRACTICAL BELL

TAKE A LOAD OFF ME
AND PUT IT ON YOURSELF
TAKE A LOAD OFF ME
AND PUT IT ON YOURSELF

TAKE A LOAD OFF ME
AND WEAR IT LIKE A SIGN
THAT YOU GET TO GET SOMETHING BACK
SOME THING THAT’S MINE

SO TAKE THAT PICTURE OFF THE WALL
THE ONE COLLECTING DUST
AND THE FALSE APPRECIATION
JUST BECAUSE YOU MUST
TAKE ALL THE POSTCARDS
FROM THE VACATION IN HELL
OR THE WORLDS MOST BEAUTIFUL RING
FROM THE WORLDS MOST IMPRACTICAL BELL

GIVE ME YOUR SPARE CHANGE
GIVE ME YOUR LOVE
GOT TO GIVE ME SOMETHING
TO MAKE YOU RISE ABOVE

GIVE ME SHELTER
FROM A BLOWING WIND
AND THE ELDEST SON
AND THE FIGHT THAT HE CAN’T WIN

Chorus

LONG TIME PASSING
LIKE A SECRET IN A CROWD
NEVER QUITE THE SAME
THE SECOND TIME AROUND

COME TO ORDER, SAID THE JUDGE TO THE COMPLAINT
THIS IS LOVE
BUT, JUSTICE IT AINT.
COME TO ORDER, SAID THE JUDGE TO THE COMPLAINT
THIS IS LOVE
BUT, JUSTICE IT AINT

Chorus

Heroine

HEROINE

SHE’S SO SWEET SHE’S DEADLY
SHE’S SO SWEET SHE’S MEAN
SHE’S SO MEAN SHE WIPES YOU CLEAN
MY HEROINE

THERE SHE IS IN MORNING
COMMITTED JUST TO ME
YOU CAN’T SEPARATE
MY HEROINE AND ME

SHE FILLS ME UP WITH EVERYTHING I NEED TO BE A HERO

WHEN WE ARE APART
SHE IS WHAT I DREAM OF
A SUNNY DAY IS ONLY SUNNY, A FUNNY JOKE IS ONLY FUNNY
WITH MY HEROINE

DON’T YOU LEAVE ME NOW, OR I’D JUST LAY DOWN
MY WILL TO LIVE AGAIN, MY HEROINE

Brother's Lament

Written By: P.A. Dutch

BROTHER’S LAMENT

HE HAD AN OLD HARLEY OUT IN THE SHED
UNDER A CANVAS, HIS BROTHER HAD SAID
TO KEEP IT FOR HIM WHILE HE WENT TO FIGHT IN A WAR

TWO SILVER DOLLARS FROM SEVENTY SIX
TAG FROM A BUICK AND TEN GUITAR PICKS
HIGH ON THE ASSET SIDE OF THE THINGS THAT COUNT
FOR MUCH

Chorus
AND HIS SECRETS WERE WORTH MORE THAN HIS LIFE
SO HE KEPT HANGIN ON IF ONLY FOR SPITE
AND HE GREW TO HATE THE NIGHTS ALONE
AND EVERY THING CHANGED WHEN HIS BROTHER CAME HOME

SHE MADE HIM FEEL ANGRY AND LIGHT ON HIS FEET
SHE WEREN’T HARD TO LOOK AT SHE CAME FROM SOME PLACE
WHERE THEY MAKE ‘EM JUST TO WRECK YOUR LIFE

AND HER LAUGH WAS HER JOB AND SHE DID IT SO WELL
STARTIN OUT SLOW LIKE AN OCEAN SWELL
LIFTIN A BOAT AND THEN LETTING IT DOWN

Chorus

HE GOT OUT THE BIKE AND STARTED IT UP
AND THEY RODE AROUND TILL THEY HAD ENOUGH
HER HANDS AROUND THE MIDDLE HOLDING ON

AND WHEN SHE WALKED HOME AND HE WATCHED HER GO
OUT THRU THE STREETLIGHT LIKE SHE DIDN’T KNOW
HE WISHED SHE WAS MADE OF SOMETHING
HE COULD STEAL

Chorus

Brother Came Home

Written By: P.A. Dutch

BROTHER CAME HOME

THE MEMORY IS LOST ON ME NOW
THERE’S ONLY STEELIN EYES

AND TRACES OF LAUGHTER I KEEP TO MYSELF
AND ALSO GRIM REMINDERS

Chorus
EVERY LAYER SHED
KNEES ON THE ROAD
SKIDDING TO DISASTER
AND LATER THE STING
DRIVES ME TO DISPLAY
MY OPEN WOUNDS IN THE GUISE OF
SOMEONES LAUGHTER
AND COME TO SOONS THAT
SOUND LIKE A SERENADE

ANOTHER NOTCH IN THE BELT DON’T MEAN WHAT IT USED TO
IT SPELLS OUT ITS NAME IS ALL

ANOTHER LASH OF THE BELT DON’T FEEL LIKE IT USED TO
ONLY MEANS THAT I AM GETTING THIN

Chorus

IT’S A SIN SIN SIN FROM ONE MAN TO ANOTHER
AND THE BEST LINES WILL CUT YOU TO THE BONE

IT’S A THIN THIN THIN AND IM WALKING FASTER
LIKE YOU DID ON MY SIDE OF THE ROAD

Chorus
