"CONNECTED MAGAZINE"

"...excellent..." - Jim Morrish

"MUSICIAN.ie"

"...PAINTING BY NUMBERS have produced a quality E.P...by comparison with most debuts this is a clear winner" - Unknown

"BACKSTAGE TRAFFIC"

"...The standout track for this reviewer is the centrepiece song "I Know". There's a real sense of urgency to this track with the crunchy guitars underpinning a passionate vocal and soaring harmonies...It's often the case that bands can hammer out rockers but come unstuck when faced with the dynamics of the ballad. Not so here, as the band manage to make the slower numbers ring true with a sense of genuine emotion....A very solid and engaging piece of work." - Emmet O'Brien

"DROP-D (LIVE REVIEW)"

"...[PAINTING BY NUMBER's] melodic and artful tunes have been the subject of much critical acclaim. From the moment they're seen on stage, its clear that this band is all about the music...The main appeal of Painting By Numbers is the obvious care and thought that has been put in to every song. The intricate chord changes and melancholy vocals have a hint of the Editors in there. There's no doubt that Ronan McCann is one of the best singers around at the moment, his voice effortlessly gliding through the songs. The debut of new song "Logic" represents the evolution of Painting By Numbers. Its harder, edgier, and the bass line is more harsh and unforgiving. It's also damn good! This new approach suits the band and long may it continue. Their encore consisted of a Posies cover, which is pulled off with zeal... Its obvious after tonight that Painting By Numbers are on the right track to becoming a steady favourite of the serious music fans and press alike..." - Unknown

"HOT PRESS-FIRST CUTS"

The following review is taken from the HOT PRESS "First Cuts" column(18/5/06) in which PAINTING BY NUMBERS were selected as the "Pick Of The Fortnight":

".....they could learn from the sense of individual style evident on the new c.d from PAINTING BY NUMBERS, all of whose songs have been penned by Ronan McCann, who also happens to be a damn fine singer. "Over And Out" breezes along merrily with a jangly guitar, decent harmonies and a good hook line. The moody "Race To Last" has an attractive arrangement that keeps your attention and boasts a terrific vocal performance from McCann."I Know" hangs together splendidly and scores with a very attractive arrangement and a sound reminiscent of Crowded House.Very promising indeed!" - Jackie Hayden

"LEONARDS LAIR (www.leonardslair.co.uk)"

REVIEW: PAINTING BY NUMBERS

4 OUT OF 5

"...Led by the warm vocals of Ronan McCann, there may be only five songs here but there's even an average one amongst them. Whether its hypnotic spiralling guitar figures (Race To Last), pleasant harmonies (I Know), or yearning balladry(Letters And Numbers) that are required, McCann and co. never stray from their quest for carefully crafted melodies..."

- Jonathan Leonard

"DROP-D (www.drop-d.ie)"

"...It's no lie to say that Ronan McCann has one of the most remarkable voices around at the moment, with the fact that it seems to flow so so effortlessly from him the most extraordinary aspect of it....In all this is a remarkable and accomplished debut, and one that is certainly among the debut releases of the year from an Irish band."

- Aoife Barry

"EVENING ECHO"

"...There is a kernel of drama here that should not be smothered" - Don O'Mahony

PAINTING BY NUMBERS

Formed less than two years ago, indie-rock four piece PAINTING BY NUMBERS have been the subject of considerable critical acclaim since the release of their debut e.p. in late 2005 (see press page). Its fusion of crystalline vocals, infectious melody, and intricately woven electric guitars, has prompted comparisons to R.E.M, The Posies, Radiohead, Sugar, Throwing Muses and Crowded House. Throughout 2006 the band’s high-energy live shows have seen them gain a loyal following nationwide. During this time they performed in such high profile venues as Cyprus Avenue, Pravda, Roisin Dubh, Spirit Store, The Music Factory,The Stables, and many more. In addition to this they received a substantial amount of airplay, both locally and nationally (e.g Today FM, Spin 1038, Cork’s 96fm). In early 2007 the band returned to the studio to begin work on their second release. This time they attempted to capture the edgier, more energetic feel of their live show. The result was a four track e.p. rich with melody, driving rhythms, and raucous guitar hooks. The e.p. entitled “Circuits” will be released in July 2007, and will available from selected stores nationwide. It will also be available for download from iTunes, eMusic, Napster, and SonyConnect. To coincide with its release the band will be embarking on a national tour (see calender page).
