"This Is Afro-Cuban Funk"

Editor's Pick:
What a great surprise ...a highly FUNKified, folklore-jazz number with inflections of timba, salsa and even a bit of R&B. Yoruba Funk Party music at its best. Whatever you want to call it, it's great stuff that will be sure to get your blood flowing. Superb vocalist and PALO! co-founder Leslie Cartaya pumps life and vitality into every arrangement. With co-founder and keyboardist Steve Roitstein at the helm, PALO! also has saxophonist Ed Calle, timbalero Raymer Olalde, conguero and singer Philbert Armenteros and others. This is funk, Yoruba style, with lots of attitude and ...Very Highly Recommended. (BP, 2009-11-20)

"The Hottest New Latin-Music CDs: PALO! This Is Afro-Cuban Funk"

By JAVIER L. ORELLANA

Afro-Cuban funk is Cuban music for the new generation. And the leader of the sound is the Miami based band Palo, led by Steve Roitstein. Their new CD opens up with “Lengua Larga,” a perfect balance of funk and Afro-Cuban rhythms dedicated to the gossip queens of the world. In “Pa’ Chango” the band celebrates the god of fire using batá rhythms, chants, and electric funk beats that will make the warrior deity dance in the sky with divine thunder. - The New York Post

Bio

PALO! has become a favorite among South Florida’s live music devotees. The group plays a style of extremely danceable music they call “Afro-Cuban Funk”. Their appeal lies in their unmatched musical energy, catchy original songs, and amazing display of impromptu virtuosity. A mix of Latin and Urban sounds gives PALO! their unique, infectious style.

PALO! was formed in 2003 when Steve Roitstein invited fellow musicians Leslie Cartaya (vocals), Philbert Armenteros (vocals, percussion), Ed Calle (sax) and Raymer Olalde (vocals, percussion) to join him in an improvised musical experiment combining Cuban music with funk beats. PALO! immediately began a residency at Hoy como Ayer, one of the area’s best live music clubs. They soon started performing in Transit Lounge, Jazid, and other area venues. PALO! has been featured at events such as Carnaval on the Mile, Art in the Park, the Amigos For Kids Charity, Miami Book Fair International, Arsht Center Fall for the Arts, Miami Music Festival, and events for the City of Miami. The band has current residencies at D. Rodriguez Cuba in South Beach, Quiereme Mucho… Morena on Calle Ocho, and The News Lounge in Midtown Miami.

PALO! recently completed their first CD, “This Is Afro-Cuban Funk” available on gopalo.com as well as in music stores, on iTunes and other digital stores.
