A Part Of Me - July 2012

Bio

Beginnings
I was once a 4 year girl with curlers in her hair and a bandana wrapped around her head sitting at an old antique upright piano trying to master Blueberry Hill by Fats Domino and You Are My Sunshine by Jimmy Davis. Growing up in a small isolated community in Newfoundland, I was very fortunate to have a mother that was a piano teacher. Although I took lessons for years the piano wasn't what interested me. What called to me...everyday...was my dads dusty old Fender. So I dug my dads old guitar books out of the back of a closet and decided I would teach myself. It didn't take long to learn basic chords, and it didn't take long before learning covers was not enough for me so I looked for inspiration in my surroundings and family and began to write!

The Change
When I was 18 years old I moved to Edmonton, Alberta. It was a really big change for me. I didn't know anyone or have the supportive network of friends that I had in Newfoundland so my music fell to the wayside. I felt a nagging emptiness in those years and I know it was because I didn't have music in my life. The change came about 8 years ago. I started playing some open stages around town and meeting other musicians. I started writing music again...good music which gave me the confidence I had lost. Finally I bought some gear and started playing by own shows locally. In July I rented some professional equipment and recorded my first EP. I have enough material that by early 2013 my goal is to release my first professionally mastered album. I do regret waiting so long to pursue music but it's never too late to start so here I am!

Influences
I have many earlier influences that still affect my style of writing today...CCR, Cat Stevens, Van Morrison, Bob Marley, Blind Melon, Ben Harper, RadioHead. Some more recent musicians that inspire me are Serena Ryder, Brandi Carlisle, The Civil Wars, Damien Rice, Bon Iver and Ray Lamontagne.
