The debut EP from Panal S.A. de C.V. is an all-instrumental affair that blends electronic pop with experimental rock. Recalling the expansive progressions and sunlit melodies of Melrose-era Tangerine Dream from the first track, Cortometraje also contains undercurrents of post-Brotherhood New Order in the keyboard arrangements on tracks like "Linda Colegiala," lending the song the feel of dreamy nostalgia. The best guitar work of the bunch can be heard on "Altepetl," in which crystalline riffs abide before fully engaging with the rhythm in distorted atmospheric twists. "Vox Populi" conjures early Live minus the angst before taking off into the stratosphere, with one guitar providing gritty textures and the other fluttering with shining notes. Never dull or repetitive, Cortometraje succeeds in not following established musical trends. - Westword
Speaking of español, our second track this week comes from Panal S.A. de C.V., a band whose name is a play on that of a new liberal political party in Mexico. The trio — Enrique and Israel Jimenez, and Juan Carlos Flores — performs instrumental post-rock compositions that stretch ambitiously in both style and sound. While shades of Tortoise and June of 44 appear in Panal’s music, there are also moments of electronic funkiness and pure pop giddiness. The outfit’s debut, “Cortometraje,” is nearly a year old, but we think it’s criminal that so few people have heard it, especially since these rock-n-roll vaqueros are about to embark on a small midwestern tour, kicking off with a show at the Larimer Lounge tonight! To get ready for that show, you should probably check out “Linda Colegiala.” - Denver Post Reverb Blog

Bio
When you hear an act being referred to as a "musician's band," it usually means the band in question has incredible technical skill but not a lot in the way of emotional resonance when it comes to songwriting — especially if the outfit is instrumental. PANAL S.A. DE C.V. bucks that trend in every way imaginable. The band's music, which speaks for itself, has evolved over the past several years. PANAL has written some of the most interesting and evocative rock music to come out of Denver, partly because it knows how to speak directly and powerfully to the heart without having to spell everything out with words.
