""No More Sweet Home Alabama""

Local cover band Panic Disorder finally releases an album of originals.

By Jonathan Cunningham

Published on September 04, 2008

One unfortunate aspect of South Florida's music scene is that there isn't nearly enough room for bands making original music to thrive financially. There are only so many venues left (and the economy isn't helping). Too many bar owners who hire bands are really just looking for a live jukebox to keep their customers happy. It's limiting, to say the least, and the local power-pop trio Panic Disorder knows all about it. The band has been grinding away three nights a week for the past two years, trying to make a name for itself — though the reality is that cover gigs are what pay the bills. Now that it's just released its first full-length album, Figure It Out (a quality, ten-song rocker full of catchy tunes about love gone awry), the band hopes local music lovers recognize that it can do a lot more than play "Blister in the Sun" to drunk patrons night after night.

I recently checked in with Panic Disorder's lead singer, Danny Guerrieri, who talked about the band's new album and the annoyances of playing covers.

New Times: Are you nervous about playing more shows full of originals instead of just working as a cover band?

Guerrieri: No, it excites us more than anything. It's been so long, we're raring to go. Most people just know us as a cover band, and sometimes we play an original and folks are like, uh, that's great, now let's hear "Sweet Home Alabama." I don't let it bother me, but we can do a heck of a lot more than that.

How long did it take you to finish this record, and what's it all about?

It took us about two months from start to finish once we went into the studio. The basic theme of the CD is, during the writing process... both my drummer and I were going through turbulent times in relationships. A lot of it is about trying to get your life and relationships on track... and how you deal with it.

How many songs do you have in your cover repertoire that you pool from each night?

We've got 150 songs that we can play note for note without having to think about it.

What's the most annoying song that people request— the one where you're like, "Fuck! Not that again?"

I'd have to say "Brown-Eyed Girl" by Van Morrison. Unfortunately, it's a great song... I only wish to write a song that popular some day. But if I had to play it again, I'd rather have my head chopped off.

What else is on that list?

"Sweet Home Alabama!" We've thrown in "All Summer Long" from Kid Rock just to spice it up, though. Also "Free Bird," but I refuse to play it. I just say, "Sorry, I'm not fucked up enough to play that song right now."

"ITB Music Spotlight - August 2007"

After starting out a little over
two years ago, Panic Disorder
has easily become one of the
hardest working bands in South Florida. Before 2007 is over, they will have played over 150 shows in Broward, Palm Beach and Dade counties.

The band is comprised of lead singer and guitarist, Danny Guerrieri Jr., bassist Don Wolf, and drummer Phil Alexander. The band has come a long way from being the regular Saturday night house band a local Irish Pub in Boca Raton.

Since employing the managerial
skills of Ben Adelberg late in 2006, the band has taken a more focused and goal-oriented approach to their performances and craft.
“We came to the realization that if
we really wanted to make something happen, we needed some help on the business end. It’s just too tough to excel musically while trying to handle the day-to-day business affairs. Having
a manager on board allows us to
concentrate solely on our music and on our performances.” said Guerrieri.

Not a bad idea for any bands out
there having a hard time juggling
booking gigs and jamming out. Since Ben came on board back in December, the band has performed at 20 different venues in the Tri-County area, including,
the Briny Pub, All Stars Sports
Bar, Lulu’s Baitshack, Play by Play
Sports Bar, Roy’s Sports Bar, Waxy
O’Conners, Murphy’s Law, Clamster’s and a couple of the Bru’s Rooms.

The guys don’t show any sign of
slowing down. In August they are going to be playing at Tarpon Bend in Ft. Lauderdale on the 2nd and 16th, the Palm Beach Gardens Dubliner on the 3rd, 14th and 17th, The Bull Bar in Delray on the 8th, 22nd and 29th, Boston’s on the Beach in Delray on the 23rd and they’ll be giving Coyote Ugly in Downtown Ft. Lauderdale a dose of rock when they perform there on the 10th.

Locally, the band has certainly made an impact, but at the end of August, they will be taking their local act to a much broader audience. They will be taking part in the Marlin’s 10th Inning Concert Series promotion at Dolphins Stadium. On Friday, August 31st, the band will perform for thousands of Marlins fans as the game winds down. They will be setup in the StrikeZone near Gate H and will take the stage toward the end of the game.

This promotion is conjunction with the Super Saturday Concert Series the Marlins are doing, in which they will have a big name perform live during every Saturday night home game.

The bands diverse set lists make their sound enjoyable for fans of all kinds of different music. They draw on all genres of rock to come up with a combination that entertains and captivates audiences. A few of their cover favorites are The Police,
Sublime, Johnny Cash, Jimi Hendrix and Third Eye Blind, to name a few.

“One of our strengths is our set list. We get people dancing and we keep them dancing. All ages enjoy our shows as well. It’s not surprising to see college kids dancing right along with couples in their 40’s and 50’s. We’ll get anyone up and dancing.” said Guerrieri.

Covering songs is good to get a crowd moving, but it’s the originals that really get the rock juices flowing. The next objective for Panic Disorder is to release their long-awaited EP this Fall.
