PANOS - Self-Titled - (Independent)
Panos Giannoulis (stage name: Panos) is a east coast artist with a soothing but avant-garde experimental sound that almost seems like he's creating on the spot. He collaborated with a number of great artists such as; Rich Aucoin, Seamus Erskine, Graeme Campbell and Rebecca Zolkower in creating PANOS while using a wide-range of instruments to orchestrate some amazing layering effects. This record is truly a piece of work; with touches of jazz, hints of rock and a twist of folk accents making PANOS stand out among the rest. With so much musical training under his belt and his writing skills nowhere near the peak point: Panos Giannoulis is on his way to a very successful career. Kudos Mr. Giannoulis.

Panos - Panos (Independently released CD, Pop)
Panos is the band created by Halifax, Nova Scotia's Panos Giannoulis...an intriguing and different songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Giannoulis was originally in the band Their Majesties (also once known as the Porcelain Gods). This self-titled album delves into some very interesting musical terrain...and you never know exactly what's going to pop up from one song to the next. Panos writes songs that teeter in and out of pop, progressive, rock, orchestral, ambient, rock, and experimental zones. After spinning this album several times we still can't come up with any possible influences and/or comparisons. But no matter what kind of music he's creating, Giannoulis always manages to entertain with his slightly bizarre compositions. Ten wonderfully colorfully tracks here including "Dustbowl," "Mr. Anderson," "Marred," and "Foreign Correspondent." We'll keep coming back to this one again and again for months to come... TOP PICK.

Panos’ collaborative self-titled debut record does well to remind me that the indie genre is still innovative and interesting. What I liked most about this album is its originality and unflinching desire to keep its audience engaged; Panos Giannoulis occasionally punctuates his ethereal vocals with bouts of rock riffs to ensure that the listener does not get too comfortable with the album’s immersive and ambient sound. In addition to its delightfully unorthodox rhythms and syncopation, Panos tastefully balances the entrancing qualities of electronic sound with the organic appeal of acoustic instruments like violins, bells, and even saxophones. For those seeking yet another fix from the bountiful Halifax music scene, this album will make a valuable addition to your music library.

Barely whispered vocals, layered instrumentation and atypical time signatures rule the roost on Panos Giannoulis’ debut, the self-titled PANOS. Giannoulis draws from his background in indie rock and his more recent involvement in avant-garde and improvised jazz, with a well-trained ear and stable of talented guests to give the album a Sufjan Stevens-esque feel. The addition of atonal elements, a healthy amount of feedback and unexpected harmonies elevate this debut to symphonic heights. Considering the relative newness of the project and the sophistication of the final product, it goes without saying that this is an act to keep an eye on. - The Coast
Panos Giannoulis is certainly a familiar name, and face, in Halifax's music scene. He's exercised his well-honed musical chops with Their Majesties (formerly Porcelain Gods) and legendary jazz-man Jerry Granelli but recently took to challenging his songwriting and composing side in a project called PANOS, with Andrew and Seamus Erskine, Rebecca Zolkower and Andrew MacKelvie filling out his band. "What this project allows me to do is blend elements I've learned playing improvised music and rock music with all my musical influences, which are pretty all over the place," says Giannoulis. And the result is dreamy, to say the least: soothing, layered pop songs that promise good things to come. Giannoulis says hopefully a record will surface sometime in June. Until then see the real deal for yourself on Friday night, up close and personal. - The Coast

Bio
PANOS is from Halifax, Nova Scotia and plays Panos Giannoulis’ music on guitar//bass//drums//sax//keyboards//violins//voices//everything.
Panos started out playing music in the indie rock band Their Majesties (formerly the Porcelain Gods) before branching out and getting involved in jazz, avant-garde and improvised music. This shift in focus gave him the opportunity to play and study with such notable musicians as jazz drumming legend Jerry Granelli (Vince Guaraldi), Fred Frith (John Zorn), Matt Brubeck (Dave Brubeck, Tom Waits), J.P Carter (Destroyer, Dan Mangan), David Tronzo (The Lounge Lizards).
Having primarily been an instrumentalist, Panos decided to start writing his own music and start a band. With the help of Charles Austin (The Super Friendz, Buck 65) Panos recorded his debut self-titled record under the moniker PANOS. Leaning heavily on his pop and rock roots, Panos also incorporates influence from his background in avant-garde music, such as prepared guitar, atonal violin, feedback and odd time signatures.
While still a rather new project, PANOS has already been heralded by The Coast, who said of the project,“ Panos Giannoulis tries his hand at songwriting and nails it.”
PANOS was selected to perform three songs with the seventy-piece Halifax Music Co-op Orchestra as part of their sold-out Inventions 2012 performances on October 14th and 15th 2012.
