"Reality Rock"

...Foremost among the “Reality” bands is the Southern California based Papa Doo Run Run. “Papa”, as their fans call them, is definitely from the “old” school (pardon the pun). They’ve been performing continuously since the late 60s – yes, I said sixties – playing the music they love, pre-MTV tunes with “a good beat and catchy melody”, what has now become known as Classic Rock, but their real forte’ is the band’s award winning re-creation of the hits of the Beach Boys.

“We started doing our 'Beach Party' act in the early 70’s when we realized that those were the songs that put smiles on everyone’s faces, and packed the dance floor. It’s happy music and doesn’t require a video to project an image or get your imagination cooking.” explained Don Zirilli, Papa’s fearless leader, and keyboardist for the past 37 years.

The fact is, that the members of Papa Doo Run Run sound SO good doing those classic BBs’ harmonies that over the years they have been recruited to fill positions in the Beach Boys band, and their various spin-off projects, on stage as well as in the studio. In addition to working with the BB’s, Papa was responsible for reuniting surf legends Jan & Dean in the mid 70’s and spent 5 years touring with the duo. During that time they also had roles in, and recorded the sound track album for the CBS-TV movie “Deadman’s Curve”, recounting J & D’s life story...

Bio

Formed in 1965, the now legendary California band, PAPA DOO RUN RUN, quickly discovered their forté - they could sound just like the Beach Boys! That sound caught the attention of surf music legends, Jan & Dean, and from 1976-80 PDRR toured North America as opening act and back-up band with the duo. In 1980, PDRR graduated from J&D to the Beach Boys, and performed and recorded with members of that band throughout the next 2 decades. The group also had an unprecedented 15-year run as the "Celebrity House Band" at Disneyland from 1975-90!

PDRR’s first major record release, “Be True To Your School” (RCA, 1975), made the Billboard Hot 100 nationally and reached No. 1 in California. Their ground-breaking CD “California Project” (Telarc, 1985) exploded onto the Hot 100 Chart at no. 17, earning the band their second Gold Record and a Grammy Nomination. Additionally, they appeared in, and recorded the soundtrack album for the CBS-TV movie “Deadman’s Curve”. Other accolades include PDRR's 2007 induction into the N. California Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (aka San Jose Rocks). The band currently has 10 CD releases as well as a full length DVD, and 3 songs in regular rotation on Sirius Satellite Radio. One of their best-kept secrets… Papa Doo Run Run is who the Beach Boys call when they need someone to “fill in” in their band.
