Bethany Gillan combines organic folk rock and funk to create a graceful and expressive sound. The young singer proves she's already a master of optimistic sorrow, as if smiling through her heart's misfortune. Whether listening to Parking Karma or a solo show, the music draws you in.

Biography

Bethany Gillan & Parking Karma play a hard rock take on funk & folk songs. We started on this trail back in November of 04 when a few jams after work between Aaron and Bethany evolved into much more. Several broken hearts, wine bottles and drumsticks later, "Parking Karma" was born. Bethany Gillan comes from Philadelphia where she established herself as a succesul singer/songwriter before deciding to journey west. Aaron "Sulli" Sullivan is a Texifornian and secretly wants to turn the group into a hardcore punk band. Nate Smith hails from DC but can usually be found at any good surf spot (or bar) anywhere from San Diego to Australia. Finally, Paul Rembert is our snare snappin' drummer who enjoys long walks on the streets of beautiful sunny Venice Beach. Together we write songs that tell stories of life as we see. Happy or sad they are all experiences that we deal with at some point or another. Our thoughts and ideas are our offerings to you. Enjoy them and share yours with us. Influences range from bands like Jellyfish, The Police, Dream Theatre, and Weezer to solo artists like Carole King, Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos, and Nikka Costa.

Days Go By

Written By: Bethany Gillan

Days Go By
Lately I've been trying to figure out what it was
Turned my life around, made me fall in love.
Mystery window, glancing past
And I still can't tell; it happened so fast.

And all I want is, a love to last
No passing shadow, however well-cast.
Something beautiful, happened with you
And all I want is something true.

Days go by,
I feel stronger.
Deep inside,
I'm growing bolder and
I won't fight
Any longer as
Days go by.

And all I have to do is talk a turn with you
And I can breathe again, the day is new.
I'll give you anything that I can.
I'd give you everything. I already have.

Days go by,
I feel stronger.
Deep inside,
I'm growing bolder and
I won't fight
Any longer as
Days go by.

This love, found a lightless candle
Burning in the night.

Days go by…

Give In

Written By: Bethany Gillan

Give In so, I can think without you.
You're all my head devours.
Give In so, the loaded weapon that taunts you.
Will cease to awaken the hour.

My teeth lined up behind my lips to fight.
The words of comfort that you spit out of spite.
And it clenches at my hands and at my feet, knowing everything just falls at your feet.

Give In so, the tainted sun won't burn you.
You're only hurting yourself.
Give In so, my growing strength won't block you.
My heart is not your wealth.

The fury grows with every sound you make.
And we've passed the point that I can take.
Don't you bore me with your bleeding lies.
It's your wounds I despise.

You take me in
You take me in

Give In so, you might just learn a little something.
It's all I can do to stay.
And Give In so, the skies will break and cleanse you.
Then, I can walk away.

Ghost

Written By: Bethany Gillan & Aaron Sullivan

I've been going about my life just fine.
Even date around when I've got the time.
But it gets complicated and things change.
I try to block it out every time someone says your name.

But I can't fall down.
I can't let my feet leave the ground.

Baby, you and me, we had something going on, but both of us believed that the timing was all wrong.
Now you're gone without a trace, nothing left just a memory of your face and I'm trying to move on.

Everybody thinks that I'm doing fine.
Well, I guess that's probably true most of the time.
But it gets complicated when I say your name.
Try to block it out, close my eyes or bury my face.

But I can't fall down.
I can't let my feet leave the ground.

Baby you and me, we had something going on but both of us believed that the timing was all wrong.
Now you're gone without a trace, nothing left just a vague memory of your face.
And I'm trying to move on.

Every time I feel I'm getting so close, to something like we had or even more.
Every time I feel I'm getting so close, I'm still fighting with your ghost.

Baby you and me, we had something going on but both of us believed that the timing was all wrong.
Now you're gone without a trace, nothing left just a memory of your face.
And I'm trying to move on.
