Parts Per Million

BandAlternativeRock

Parts Per Million are purveyors of "MALT" (Mixture ALTernative) rock. Secret Weapons: Hooky choruses + hard edges + epic violin + synth fury. PPM sounds like the mix CD you'll keep playing over and over again.

Biography

Parts Per Million (Jay Ro > vocals, guitar, violin, synth | Jimmy Jensen > drums | Bruce Rarang > bass | Jimmy Chung > guitar) exploded onto the Chicago music scene in late 2008, quickly setting themselves apart as a singular and unique band. Parts Per Million's music rings true with hooky choruses, hard edges, and epic violin passages. It's easy to hear why their audience runs the gamut from the young person just discovering rock music to the more mature, seasoned listener experiencing PPM’s unique combination of energy-driven rock with rolling, violin-filled passages and honest lyrics. Their sound has been compared to that of Smashing Pumpkins, Jimmy Eat World, Weezer, Deftones, and Muse.

Contributing to their unique sound is the varied backgrounds of each member. Frontman Ro was classically trained on the piano and violin and has been a featured performer with several symphonic orchestras. Drummer Jensen has played with various symphonic, marching, and jazz bands. Guitarist Chung has shared the stage with many national acts, including Seether, Buckcherry, and Collective Soul. Lastly, bassist Rarang has been rocking the local Chicago scene for many years, participating in numerous shows, TV tapings, and documentaries. This combination of talents, experiences, and interests has culminated in PPM being a band unlike any that has been heard on the rock scene.

In the year since their inception, several of PPM’s notable accomplishments include:
• 2008 Kollaboration Grand Prize Winner (Chicago, IL)
• Winner of the 2007 Great American Song Contest for 'Analog Heart'
• Freedom Over Texas Festival, July 4th ‘09 – Featured Performer (Houston, TX)
• GRACE’09 Featured Performer (Chicago, IL)
• ENE Chicago Rocks - Comcast Channel 25 Featured Musical Guest (Chicago, IL)
• Mantic Music E-Zine Featured Band

They have been performed at such storied venues as:

• The Abbey Pub, Martyr’s, Elbo Room, Reggie’s Rock Club & Music Joint, Subterranean, Cubby Bear, Beat Kitchen, US Beer Co., and the Underground Lounge. (Chicago)
• The Proletariat, Taft Street Coffee, Hole in the Wall, and Stafford on Main (Texas)

Recently the band released their debut music video for their song “Racer on YouTube and is currently preparing songs for their third album, scheduled to be released later this year. They continue to perform regularly and are seeking label/talent representation.

Lyrics

Racer

Written By: Jay Ro

Starting past the line. Running out of time. But I’m good to go.
Tension on my neck. Hypertension wreck. But I still must go.

I’m running, racing as fast as I can.
I’m pushing, pulling til the end.
I’m going faster than I’ve ever been.

Yet still I can’t quite pass the line.
That seems to form here every time.
In front of me, no point in even trying.

Thoughts fly through at will. My mind moves, body’s still.
Be careful man, cause speed kills.
Fueled by faith to drive, but my tank’s running dry.
Crash and burn’s the way to die.

Overloaded, to corrosion. Soul erosion. Blame.
Uncontrolled. Out of order. Dead-end goal, then pain.

Analog Heart

Written By: Jay Ro

Turn up your amps to eleven.
Tune down your drop-kick bass.
Hear the beat with your drum machine yeah.
Now strum along to a 6-string song.

Did my song get through to you?
Did you hear how it came through?

(From my analog h – e – a – r – t…)
I’m trying to tell you something maybe.
Don’t forget what I’m sayin’ baby.
But if you do then I’ll say it’s true that my analog heart still beats for you.

I’m attuned to your frequency.
And you’ve got my full reception.
Can you hear we’re two melodies
In harmony, in-sync symphony?

(From my analog h – e – a – r – t…)
I’m trying to tell you something maybe.
Don’t forget what I’m sayin’ baby.
But if you do then I’ll say it’s true that my analog heart still beats for you.

I’m tryin’ to make you think, think of me.
I hope you hear my signals clearly.
But if you’re not then I’ll say it’s true that my analog heart still spins for you.

Visualize the Sound

Written By: Jay Ro

Suppose that I came to you and proposed that we make it through.
You see we’re too unkind to be saved on our own

Screw what they think. Screw what they say.
I’m gonna be with you from here today.
Screw what they hear. Screw what they know.
I’m gonna be with you, yeah so here we go.

Tell me what do you see, honestly?
It’s the sound of a beat for you and me.

Suppose, we’re all alone, and behold, everybody’s gone.
Receive, this song for you. Believe that it’s all been true.

Quiet Desperation

Written By: Jay Ro

Tell me where You are. Tell me You’re not far.
Tell me You can hear me singing.
Is there someone there? Somebody who cares?
Is it just myself that’s speaking?

Should I go away? Try again someday?
Or am I wasted try?

Where are You? I need You.
Just show me, show me You.

Once again I’ve lost, the battle I just fought.
Surrounded on all sides, I’m weary.
Am I out of time?
Am I out of line?
To make up for my indecision?

Should I take that gun? I filled with the poison?
I drained from my own mind?
Cause if You’re not here with me, I might as well believe.
I was just a waste of time.

Where are You? I need You.
Just show me where You are.

Where are You? I need You.
I’m running after You.

Where are You? I need You.
Just show me where You are.

Tunnel Vision

Written By: Jay Ro

Baby… I can’t even see…
Two feet in front of me… behind, around, under, and over
There’s just me… feeling clumsily
Along this tunnel of mine, I feel so blind. What exactly was I to find?

I’m tired of this way. I’m tired of these days, waking up to a painful same.
I’m tired of this mind that seems so blind. What exactly was I to find?

I’m looking it over and over. I’m seeing the lines you filled in
I’m reading your grand confession that dropped me to my knees again.
I’m falling all over the place. I’m seeking a hand to hold
I’m suffering from tunnel vision that makes me feel,
makes me feel so damn old.

Baby… I can barely breathe
My eyes can barely see, but ‘round my neck it’s my own hands I’m feelin’.

There’s no way… I could get away
Out of this tunnel of mine, I feel so blind. What exactly was I to find?

You'll Go On

Written By: Jay Kyun Ro

You’ll Go On

V1:
She’s easy to see when you’re colorblind
She’s easy to bleed when you say goodbye
It’s easy to see her crying out inside
And she pulls those curtains down Who’d want to see this coming?

Pre-Ch1:
And we find ourselves,
Coming back again. Something more than friends.
And we shouldn’t go back down that road.
Cause what’s through is through. Even if we wanted to
“You/Me” cannot happen

Ch:
Say your prayers, say them loud, say them one more time
Cause once more it will all fall away, you won’t even know it’s gone
So you think you won’t recover, that this pain, it won’t be over
But in time fades away, you won’t even know it’s gone.

V2:
She’s easy to see when you’re colorblind
She’s easy to bleed when you say goodbye
It’s easy to see her crying out inside
And she pulls those curtains down She never saw it coming.

Pre-Ch2:
Yes it’s hard to speak, and it’s hard to breathe
Your love’s choking and I’ll do nothing
Cause what’s through is through. Even if we wanted to
“You/Me” cannot happen

I’m gonna turn and leave, there’s nothing here for me
There’s nothing left to say, today is just a day
A day to realize, our love was just a lie
Cause you will find someone else to

Occupy your heart, play the leading part
In the adaptation of your life
He’ll be just the guy, to fit the perfect girl
So much so, it’s all you’ll remember

But for now it hurts, and I’m sure my words
Mean little comfort to breaking hearts
Although you’re bent and broken, I’ll tell you
You’ll Go On…

Ch:
Say your prayers, say them loud, say them one more time
Cause once more it will all fall away, you won’t even know it’s gone
So you think you won’t recover, that this pain, it won’t be over
But in time fades away, you won’t even know it’s gone.
