"Mick Skidmore"

"...A five-piece that mixes all manners of roots music into its intoxicating organic sound. Blues, folk, old-time and more exotic rhythms find their way into the band's finely crafted songs, which are colored by superb instrumental embellishments... Both CDs offer plenty of quality hook-laden, harmony-laced songs that have enough quirky and unexpected musical turns to make them stand head and shoulders above many similar acts." - Relix Sept/Oct 2004

"Derek Schleelein"

"I can't think of a more appropriate title for... 'Into the Cactus Plain.' The sound of Diana Andersen's vocals recall an empty western canyon or an open desert. This music is full of space, but ends up being more full because of it. Paso Fino has... found the right places for music and silence, a balance that is hard to make." - Ithaca Times

"Gary Whitehouse/Peter Massey"

"The playing, singing, and production on 'Should've Bought a Pony' are top-notch... Andersen's voice is in the upper-alto range, well-suited to the material - a little raspy when called for, or with a catch in the right places... As a songwriter she has a talent to be reckoned with." - GreenmanReview.com

"Marilyn Beyer"

"I cannot say what is more impressive: the writing or the singing & playing." - Music Director WUMB/Boston

"Loudon Temple"

"...Everyone's beginning to seek more, from the best kept secret that is Paso Fino." - Maverick July 2004

Bio

Shane Lamphier got his start as a teenager playing mandolin in the Bubba George String Band with friends Jeb Puryear, Jordan Puryear, and Richie Stearns (also of The Horse Flies). You can still catch them opening the Fingerlakes GrassRoots Festival of Music & Dance in Trumansburg, NY every year! From there, they all went on to help form Donna the Buffalo. Shane was the original drummer for the band, where he recorded and toured for 7 years. He can also be found on Donna the Buffalo lead singer Tara Nevins’ “Mule to Ride,” playing electric guitar.

In 1993, Shane and Diana first played together in the band Boojum Twist, an electric outfit. From there, the two went on to tour and record with Good Dog Bad Dog. While in this band, the duo opted to branch out and record “Mystified,” an acoustic side project that truly served as the birth of Paso Fino.

For their I-Town Records debut, “Should’ve Bought a Pony,” Diana and Shane relied on the Ithaca-area music community to put the finishing touches on the songs. There are special guest performances scattered throughout, including: Tara Nevins (Donna the Buffalo) on electric fiddle; Bill King (Jennie Stearns Band) on drums; June Drucker (The Horse Flies) on bass and ashiko drum; and Peter Dodge (formerly of The Horse Flies) on trumpet.

Since then, Paso Fino has been playing around the Northeast, with Kristin Sharkey on harmony vocals, and Nick Papador and Jim Armstrong on percussion. Jim Armstrong has recorded and toured with Five Horse Johnson (DMP Albany). He’s the author of “Vodou Drumset: Traditional Afro-Haitian Rhythms Applied to Drums” (Carl Fischer, 2002). Paso Fino performs annually at GrassRoots, where last year they shared the stage with Los Lobos, Jim Lauderdale, and The Johnny Dowd Band, among others.

Now, Paso Fino has recently released their much-anticipated second album on I-Town Records, “Into the Cactus Plain.” Honing the knife’s edge balance between clarity and complexity of sound, intensely rhythmic, with evocative lyrics, soulful guitar work, and powerful voices, this album will take you on a journey to plumb the depths of your heart’s desire.
