Kiki Sanchez: Dreams
Latin Beat Magazine , Dec, 2006 by Rudy Mangual

KIKI SÁNCHEZ Dreams (KS Music)
Kicking off with Dreams, the original score and title track, composer/arranger/educator/pianist Luis Enrique "Kiki" Sánchez displays his unique brand of Latin jazz flavor in this debut recording. A native of Lima, Perú, Kiki Sánchez completed his musical education under the guidance of maestros Coco Macedo and Edermi Chávez. He also played with various Peruvian bands, such as Perú Salsa All-Stars, Orquesta Majestic (led by his father, Máximo Sánchez), and La Unica, before heading north to the U.S. to further his musical career. Currently based in Miami, Sánchez has recorded and/or performed with Arturo Sandoval, Israel "Cachao" López, Frankie Marcos, Carlos Averhoff, Néstor Torres, and Oriente (a group led by Eddie Barzola), to mention a few. This new production features Sánchez leading his own group (mostly a quintet) and delivering a variety of Peruvian-folk rhythms marinated with modern jazz melodies. The mixed repertoire of original scores and jazz classics include favorites like El Condor Pasa, Killer Joe, and Lando-timba. Guest artist Pilar de la Hoz adds folkloric vocals to the tracks Zambamalato Lando and El Puente de los Suspiros.

"KIKI SANCHEZ COLLABORATING WITH SUSANA BACA"

Sunflower Entertainment artist Kiki Sanchez, is currently in the studio recording his next album. Kiki fans will be in for a wonderful surprise as Afro-Peruvian sensation, Susana Baca will collaborate with him on some tracks. Kiki is an exceptional Peruvian pianist who incorporates various music styles, from Jazz to Afro-Peruvian and even Afro-Cuban to form a genre of his own. Sanchez plays from the heart, each note is filled with such emotion that it would be quite difficult for anyone to ignore. Whether it is the melodic sound of the piano or the invigorating beats of the congas in the background, Kiki Sanchez shows that his music can be enjoyed by people from all walks of life. One can sit back and enjoy a nice cup of coffee, tea or any beverage of preference while hearing songs such as “Timba” and “Dreams”. Although his piano style is predominantly “Latin-based”, one can say that Kiki’s style truly has an Afro-Peruvian flare with a touch of elegance. This is due to the fusion of Jazz and Latin flavors, each complimenting one another and bringing the best of all worlds.

Being a key figure in Afro-Peruvian music, Baca is a phenomenal singer who was a key influence in the revival of Afro-Peruvian folklore. Her voice is flawless, exquisite, full of feeling and a whole lot of soul. Her lyrics send listeners to another world, sending us on a trip to the past. Baca’s lyrics show a great deal of symbolic imagery, where themes such as African enslavement, liberty, love, and the hardships of life are clearly illustrated.

(www.kikisanchez.com) (EEG)
