"WONKAVision Magazine (Philadelphia PA) "Like all the songs on the album, they contain encouraging and positive lyrics that compliment the laid back and well-crafted world music""

Patrick Ryan
KNOWLEDGE

Patrick Ryan's new full-length is a rarity - a musically ambitious record that incorporates world music beats, jazz instrumentation, reggae, and intelligent political conversation without once sounding cloudy, preachy, or cliche. The messages of tolerance and optimism and sincere. The vibe of the record is that of respect: for the listener when discussing the legality of marijuana, AIDS, etc., and for those seeking just good, diverse music with no filler. KNOWLEDGE delivers both. "Only Love (Pass it On) and "In Dreams Tonight" are pure and danceable reggae tracks anchored by great choruses and an acoustic guitar. With their slicing guitar bits and clean vocal melodies, tracks like "CrazyMind", "Down From Space", and "Nothing You Can Do" would not be out of place on the last Los Lonely Boys record. "I Stand Alone" could have been penned by Sting. The album standout, though, is the rough reggae-rap of "Simpatico", which reminds the listner of the best songs of Sublime's catalogue. The latter, like all of the songs on the album, contain encouraging and positive lyrics that compliment the laid back and well-crafted world music. Ryan sings, "Don't follow in the footsteps of anyone but yourself." With KNOWLEDGE, he is doing just that.

"SYNTHESIS (Chico CA) "Patrick Ryan crafts and upbeat, Afro-Caribbean sound: a regular reggae Reznor""

PATRICK RYAN
Knowledge (8Earth)

Despite his mid-western upbringing, Patrick Ryan crafts an upbeat, Afro-Caribbean sound. Far more than just guitar and vocals, Ryan also performs bass, keyboards and programming: a regular reggae Reznor. But don't pigeonhole KNOWLEDGE; it includes a range of styles, incorporating rock power chords, '80s pop synthesizer noises and DJ scratching. Ryan uses his voice to simulate the ocean and it's breezes, spreading a message of harmony with one's self and the world. He also decries marijuana laws, sampling pot smoker staple flicks and singing about the evils of criminalized medicine. Ultimately, purists would scoff at a "reggae" label here; it has more of a pop-y college radio vibe. Ryan sounds good, smooth, and hook-heavy

"SENTIMENTALIST (New York NY)"Patrick Ryan successfully dips into the pools of reggae, jazz, world-beat and ethereal to create a lush landscape of sound" KNOWLEDGE by PATRICK RYAN (8Earth)"

"It's a shock to hear this reaggae pop album and to find that artist Patrick Ryan is actually not an island native, but a musician based in Minnesota. You'll excuse his chilly home climate since the warmth of this eclectic music will transport you to an island paradise. Catchy title track, pop single "Knowledge", is a blissfull ode to grass, opening with one woman's defense regarding her right to smoke, sampled from the cult hit "Reefer Madness". Ryan successfully dips into the pools of reggae, jazz, world-beat and ethereal to create a lush landscape of sound, touching on everthing from positive underlying political themes to simple tales of love. Through it all, we are reminded, "We're living strictly now on island time," as Ryan sings in"Only Love (Pass it On)". We could all use a tuneful message or two about peace, love, and the pursuit of freedom in these strange days"

"SMOTHER (Manassas VA) - Knowledge by PATRICK RYAN (8Earth)"

With world-beat rhythms, reggae influences, and pop-rock’s harmonies, “Knowledge” is an eclectic yet effective album. An overall vibe that is psychedelic in nature, “Knowledge” grabs your attention from the first moment despite its chill atmosphere. Lyrically it’s quite topical and telling, ranging through a variety of themes that we all can relate to on some level. You gotta love the samples from the classic ironic cult hit “Reefer Madness” that juxtaposes his hit that is also featured on marijuana rights activist’s NORML’s Satellite Player.

"EARBUZZ (Benicia CA)"Ryan has assembled something artistic w/ Knowledge - it pushes genre and issues with accuracy & pleasure" KNOWLEDGE by PATRICK RYAN (8Earth)"

earBuzz Review: Patrick Ryan's CD, "Knowledge", is a combination of reggae and pop that is full of joy and wisdom. Professional production and interesting artistic bending of genres complete a 13 song collection that inspires. The record opens with "Down from Space" - an ode to the change of life and perception. African vocals support Paul Simonish guitar and sensibility and Ryan sings, 'life is never what it seems, sometimes your friends are your enemies'. Track 2, "Knowledge", opens with sound bytes of marijuana use justification as the tune clearly shows that legalizing weed would save resources while uplifting personal freedom, and is the title track of the CD. Ryan promises a 'higher day for everyone. .come on baby tell me if it's worth all the fight, feel no pain, medicine that ease the brain, take a stand, running from the police man'. Track 4, "Paradise", is a wonderful pop cross-over tune - great writing and performance. "Only Love" is our favorite - a reggae flavored tune about love - of course - but done with an alternative vocal performance. Nice. "Simpatico" is an ode to a drag - a tune that approaches hip/hop, Ryan sings about the girl who runs all over town and spread rumors. Again, this tune crosses to pop, reggae, and rap - great. Overall, Ryan has assembled something artistic - it pushes genre and issues with piercing accuracy and pleasure. - Music Director / EARBUZZ

"CAMPUS CIRCLE (Los Angeles CA)"

Patrick Ryan
Knowledge

By Laren Mahoney

Let’s say you are temporarily stuck on a tropical island with nothing but fruity libations and a CD. Patrick Ryan’s Knowledge should be the album du jour. In a CD that successfully combines reggae, new age and a touch of jazz, the album creates a sweet mix of musical styles that breaks up any possible musical monotony and makes those fruity concoctions slide down easily.
Knowledge’s "Prince of Power" and "I Stand Alone" have already seen play on the college radio circuit. The rest of the album delivers a diverse, part-reggae-part-soulful sound.
Ryan uses instruments from different genres, including heavy bass mixed with guitar, steel drums, flute, mandolin, banjo and piano, among others. His influences, ranging from Ben Harper, Dave Matthews and Jack Johnson, are widely evident, explaining his heavy collegiate following.

Rastarians, soft rockers and college partiers alike will like this album. Regardless of your preferred musical stylings, close your eyes and pop in this CD. Your island time has never been so sweet.

Grade: B+
