Bio

Paul Carter began his musical life at the age of eight, playing the piano, and later taking up the saxophone at the age of eleven. His musical development was sparked well and truly at the age of 13 when he began to play in local stage bands resulting an overwhelming curiosity in jazz and improvisation. Paul, at this stage, chiefly a pianist began to be increasing ingrossed in improvisation and composition then formed and co-wrote songs for rock band Flavus. Pauls attention was drawn to the saxophone and improvisation when accepted into the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School. Beginning a period intensive study and development Paul was a high achiever at VCASS and also began doing jazz and rock gigs with fellow musicians playing both saxophone and piano. In 2004 Paul began BMUS studies in the jazz course at Monash University and was fortunate enough to study under the tuition of musicians such as Jamie Oehlers, Tony Gould, Rob Burke, Julien Wilson, and Steven Magnusson. From 2004 to 2006 Paul was involved in the reggae/hip-hop/latin band De Jah Groove. The band having such experiences as recording EPs and an album with music producer Andy Baldwin (The Cat Empire, 67 Special), extensive interstate touring and playing at festivals such as Woodford Folk Festival and St. Kilda festival. De Jah Groove was also fortunate enough to represent Australia in the Global Battle of the Bands competition, where they performed at the Astoria in London. Paul's current projects are, The Dalcarte Duo, a piano and sax duo performing original jazz tunes, Pip & Paul, an electronica/trip-hop/jazz colaboration, Astro Flava, a funk/hip-hop out-fit with vocals by Angelie and Pataphysics, and various jazz bands.
