"Konstanz Kurier live gig review, 2003"

From Thomas Zoch ...
In a remarkable solo performance, Paul Fogarty the singer and songwriter presented his debut concert at the "Turm" in Konstanz. The performance was even a European Premiere. The Australian, who has worked as a professional musician the last 3 years back home, has been living in Germany for three months and has had only a few gigs in the Stuttgart area so far.
You could almost hear during his concert that love was the reason for his arrival in Germany. A number of sentimental ballads were showcased on his program, highlighted by his original composition "Everloving Arms" which he dedicated to his new German wife. But Fogarty also interpreted cover songs like "Sunny" and Neil Young"s "Hey Hey My My", with great tenderness.
Cover songs are not usually part of the likeable Australian´s repertoire. For over a year he hasn"t played cover songs, he told me in a short break during his 3-hour gig, but he wasn"t sure what the German public expected. The audience who listened intensely on this night, soaked up both the cover songs and Fogarty"s own songs. He also played some interesting interpretations including Janice Joplin´s A-cappella-classic "Mercedes Benz" – which Fogarty quickly turned into a Rock n" Roll–Shuffle with one verse from "That"s Alright Mama" thrown into the mix.
In another cover-song medley Fogarty performed Paul Simon"s "Feelin" Groovy", in which the Australian´s fine voice became suddenly extremely rough, then became a Dylan-parody, then turned into a Bee Gees song, and then finished in the chorus of "American Pie".
And to the rock classic "All Along The Watchtower" he added an endless-guitar-riff with a flamenco-accord. But Fogarty doesn"t need to hide behind big stars with his own material. Songs like the exciting "Jesus Knows", the beautiful "Stagefright" (title song of his second CD) or the bitter-melancholic "Small Town Ways" were highlights in the concert.

Bio

Paul: "My songs are like short movies, shot in black and white to keep the stories and melodies in focus and up front. Sure they come from a personal and intimate place but its a universal place so anyone can relate to it. The songs are never so beige or pastel that the message gets drowned. I open up my mind and my soul and then the heart of the song has the nerve to come flooding out."
