Paul Hlebcar

BandFolk

A modern-folk blend of alt-country and pop, with just a touch of blues and jazzy-lounge, all accented with the unplugged sound of acoustic guitar, voice, and some 'mean' harmonica solos.

Biography

Local San Francisco Bay Area bandleader goes back to his roots, playing solo, unplugged, with a nice blend of introspective tunes. Paul's been around, and is proud of it. His CD, 'stand alone', is the product of a somewhat eclectic journey through life's ups and downs. He started playing folk music in the late sixties, grabbed an electric guitar in the eighties, formed a dance band in the nineties, and has now come full circle to "stand alone." He has many stories to tell, and tells them in a troubadour style that takes a little bit from here, a little bit from there, and comes up with a nice blend of tunes.

Lyrics

I'll Walk These Streets

Written By: Paul Hlebcar

I'LL WALK THESE STREETS,
AND WAIT FOR IT TO GO AWAY
I KNOW IT WILL, SOMEDAY.
THE SUN WILL SHINE,
AND THE SKY SO BLUE WILL FILL WITH CLOUDS,
AND SOMEDAYS IT'LL RAIN….

SOME SAY THIS CURSE,
OF SORROW NEVER ENDS
BUT WHAT WAS WORSE, WAS ITS BEGINNING.
SO I WILL NURSE,
THESE WOUNDS AS BEST AS I CAN
AND TRUST IN FAITH, AS IF,
I COULD HOLD IT IN MY HAND
JUST LIKE A STONE,
SMOOTH FROM AN ENDLESS OCEAN TIDE
FINDS A HOME, ON THE SHORELINE.
I'LL STAND ALONE, AMONG A MILLION JUST LIKE ME WHO CARRY ON
LIKE THE WAVES OF THE SEA…

THE WATER FLOWS,
AND THE FISH THEY SWIM UPSTREAM,
HEAVEN KNOWS, WHY THE HELL THEY DO.
AND SO I GO,
AS MY FOOTSTEPS SEEM TO TELL ME OF A PLACE, I'VE ALWAYS KNOWN.
I WALK THESE STREETS,
AND WAIT FOR IT TO GO AWAY
I KNOW IT WILL, SOMEDAY.
THE SUN WILL SHINE,
AND THE SKY SO BLUE WILL FILL WITH CLOUDS,
AND SOME DAYS IT'LL RAIN…

All Rolled Up

Written By: Paul Hlebcar

We were singin' 'bout somethin' blue
Don't know why it's such a painful hue
Down at Joey's Lounge next to the old Bel Aire
Passin' the hat as we took our share

Partners in crime, that's what we were
Stealin' the moment as it would occur
We'd find some hippie dive or just a whiskey bar
Then prove she wasn't just another risin' star

Chorus:
What she could handle was anything
That's why I loved her, why birds still sing
Why it's all rolled up in everything
Everything…

Sachet or strollin' babe it's all the same
I loved her walk…I loved her game
I never asked her when she looked so good
Doin' better than the best she could

Inside the eye inside her storm
Ambition took an ugly form
I shoulda known' that she would slip away
Getting' captured in that old cliché

What she could handle was anything
That's why I loved her, why birds still sing
Why it's all rolled up in everything
Everything…

So now I keep my distance dear
As if well trained…to stay right here
To not forget not to forget
And to see it all with no regret

So go ahead, and toss your hair
The sun it seems to like it there
The light it jumps and flies away
Down Webster Street where the young girls play

Thinkin' that they could handle anything
That's why I wanted her, why it still stings
Why it's all rolled up in everything
Everything…

So go ahead, and toss your hair
The sun it seems to like it there
And everyone who walks on by
Has a smile on their face don't you ever wonder why

They feel like they could handle anything
Like in the air there's love, like birds still sing
Like it's all rolled up in everything
Everything…everything…everything.

PIECES

SO HERE I SIT, A BIT CONFUSED
IS THERE SOMETHING I SHOULD SAY
LIKE MISTAKES WERE MADE, HOW WE BOTH REFUSED
TO STOP THOSE BITS AND PIECES FROM FALLIN' AWAY
JUST CLEAN THE MESS UP, WE'LL START ANEW
CAREFUL HOW WE BEGIN
THE BRAVE NEW WORLD CAN BE THE SAME OLD SONG…
BUT WE'RE GONNA SING
(OHHVER)

NOW I CONFESS, IT NEVER FELT THIS WAY
THE MANY TIMES I'VE BEEN ALONE
IS IT REALLY THAT MUCH EASIER
WHEN THE CHOICES ARE NOT YOUR OWN
SO POINT YOUR FINGER NOW, I'LL TAKE THE BLAME
BREAK YOUR VOW IT'S JUST THE SAME
BROKEN PROMISES ARE NOT THE WAY TO CARRY ON…
BUT WE CARRY ON
(NOW THAT IT'S OHHVER)

SO HERE I SIT, STILL CONFUSED
TO MYSELF I HAVE SAID
LOVE'S THE VICTIM, ONCE AGAIN ABUSED
PICK THE PIECES UP AGAIN
AND AGAIN…AND AGAIN…PICK EM UP AGAIN

(OHHVER)

Discography

This is Paul's debut CD. Better late than never...

Set List

Ten Songs from 'stand alone' and a wide range of cover tunes. A typical repertoire would include some Dylan, Beatles, some country tunes, an old standard or two from the swing era, maybe a Neil Young tune, a Steely Dan tune, some Van Morrison, and a few modern artists---Paul enjoys giving a different twist to songs by female vocalists such as Lisa Loeb. A huge cover tune songlist is available.
