"PAULIE P & ROCKSTEADY LIVE AT THE ELLIGNTON JAZZ CLUB"

Paulie P and Rocksteady at the Ellington

When I heard Paul Hayes was performing at the Ellington Jazz Club with a funk band, I was surprised. Having grown up in Denmark, I knew Paul as a guy crazy for hip hop. Having recording his first song ‘The Place to Be’ at age 13 in 2003 with Disaster, (Downsyde’s main producer) and supporting the likes of Bliss n Eso, Hilltop Hoods, Ghostface Killah, Drapht and Rhazel – with or without his other project, Deltaforse, with emcee/producer Yaegar Stauks and emcee/DJ James Buchanan (AKA Jamu) – being in a seven piece funk band seemed like a bold new direction, so I headed down to check it out.

Arriving at midnight, the Ellington was full, with dim, ruby red lights illuminating the stage and tea light candles flickering on small wooden tables that were all occupied. Standing at the bar, I didn’t have to wait long before the band got started with an original track, ‘Reach Out’. Robin Murray kept the bass thumping, Garo Tanzi pounded out percussion, Dale Boaden was a machine on electric guitar, Sid Pattni impressive on keys and DJ Defyre kept things spinning.

I had held reservations that the division between hip hop and funk genres would be glaring, however Sam Nafie’s smooth, soulful vocals complimented Paulie P’s rapping, and served to highlight their individual strengths.

They seamlessly launched into another original track, ‘Who Knows’. Lyrics about seizing the moment and affection towards a certain girl had the audience smiling, and the uplifting melody matched the content perfectly.

The next track, ‘Hours’, was an insight into how long it takes to craft beats and rhymes and how passionate Paulie is about what he does. Sid Pattni busted out the vocoder for this one, which was a hit with the crowd.
‘Legends of Funk’ was a personal favourite, focusing on the assumptions people have about hip hop music. With lyrics like ‘don’t underestimate the style I bring/hip hop is my precious like Lord of the Rings/but I love soul music like Aretha Franklin or maybe Stevie Wonder and the Temptations’ soon laid these pre-conceived notions to rest. Everybody in the room was tapping their feet in time to this track about the origins of funk music.

The band then did covers with their own lyrics. Damien Marley and Nas’ ‘Road to Zion’ was the first, followed by Outkast’s ‘So Fresh, So Clean’, which Paulie P bought Cortex (Sean Clarke, another Denmark lad) up on stage for. During the next cover, Paulie did some freestyle and beat boxing that got rowdy applause and hands in the air.

After a quick break, Paulie P and Rocksteady launched straight back into it. By now, the crowd was quite liquored up and there was some energetic dancing going on. So energetic in fact that a table and chair may have been knocked over, giving everyone a chuckle. For De La Soul’s ‘It Ain’t All Good’, Paulie got a female audience member up on stage to do some vocals with him. On the next track, ‘Fly Away’, the DJ came out from behind the decks and did an extended rap, while Paulie sang – I’m always surprised when rappers can also nail a decent tune and Paul was pretty good. ‘Bassline Take It Away’ by The Roots was next to get the Paulie P and Rocksteady remix, followed by Lupe Fiasco’s ‘Paris, Tokyo’ which really demonstrated the combined strength and subtlety of Sam’s velvety vocals.

During this last track, Paulie introduced all the band members to the audience, with solo’s demonstrating their individual talent. Another Denmark guy, Kai McGuinness, hopped up on stage to do a rap, and was joined by ‘The Apprentice’ who was quite the wordsmith. The band also graciously thanked the venue, the sound technician and the crowd for staying out until 3am to jam with them, something I’m sure no one in the crowd regretted, if the smiling faces were anything to go by.

Paulie P may sometimes be called ‘Small Paul’ but that in no way reflects his energy, passion or soul for his craft. Himself and the other talented members of Rocksteady are in the final stages of recording their first album, Until That Time, due for release in December. Do yourself a favour and check them out, you won’t regret it. - Lisa Morrison

Bio

Local MC Paulie P was surrounded by music growing up in Denmark. With muso parents, Paulie picked up drumsticks at the age of 11 before jumping into the hip hop scene as a young teenager even getting to record his first song with local legend Dazastah of Downsyde fame.

Being13 and doing my first song with Dazastah from Downsyde. "It was a great being that age and having the opportunity to work with someone of that calibre.

From then, it was game on he started writing and producing beats and, along with a crew, started Denmarks Delta Forse. It wasnt long before Delta Forse were playing shows and supporting touring acts tearing through town.

The now Perth-based, 24-year-old hip hop maestro is becoming a force to be reckoned with, having already supported the likes of Bliss N Eso, the Hilltop Hoods, Downsyde, the late Hunter, Drapht, 360, Ghostface Killah, Rahzel, Das Efx, Immortal Technique, Del The Funky Homosapien, Thundamentals and more. Hes also Played Summadayze, Southbound, Nannup and Denmark festivals.

Some of Paulie Ps most rewarding work has involved touring through Northern WA and doing hip hop workshops with remote indigenous kids. This was a great experience!, Paulie P says. Thanks to WAM and Optamus we had the chance to tour, play and give hip hop workshops to remote indigenous kids in Geraldton, Yalgoo, Meekatharra, Mount Magnet and Mullewa. The kids were really talented and had a great energy; I definitely want to go back in future.

Known for his willingness to explore new territory, Paulie P has finished his forthcoming debut record Until That Time which was  released 14 / 3 / 2014 Self-produced, Until That Time is a double-disc showcasing Paulie Ps ability to push the boundaries of the ever evolving hip hop scene.

Working with a seven-piece band live and incorporating live drums, triggers and a DJ, the record oozes funk and soul, layered with breezy dub rhythms and slick jazz undertones, adding to his fresh hip hop sound. its taken a lot longer than expected so Im hoping this gets the ball rolling so I can release another soon.

Expect to hear more from this MC as he continues to evolve as a live act and brings his A-game to each show.
