A weekly gig is about the best way for guitarists to hone their craft, and Houston's Paul Ramirez has done just that Wednesday nights at the Continental Club for more than a year now. It pays off in Sex With a Dragon, his debut CD that throws in a little Santana and New Orleans R&B into Ramirez's stick-to-your-ribs Texas blues-rock and shows some salty reverence towards Blind Lemon Jefferson's "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean." Dragon breathes enough fire that it doesn't wilt when held up to the gold standard of 2012 Lone Star guitarslinger offerings, Gary Clark Jr.'s Blak and Blu. - Houston Press
The Paul Ramirez Band grabs your attention by the jugular. Paul is an “in the moment” type of lead guitarist with a pedal arrangement consisting only of a tuner and distortion gadget, yet he coaxes out some of the area’s finest lead breaks invented on the spot. The term “in outer space” comes to mind… Ramirez also sports one of the smoother voices happening these days. I scored a copy of Paul’s first CD titled “Sex With A Dragon” and was curious how the recording could capture Paul’s fluidic lead breaks. The effort was recorded and mixed at the Fat Tone Studio in Baton Rouge and mastered at Sugar Hill Recording Studios. Overall, this is one well-engineered product that breathes unlike many of the relentlessly compressed recordings frequenting the market the past couple of decades. The Paul Ramirez Band is an incendiary three–piece–band from Houston, Texas that has been a Best Blues Band nominee four years in a row from 2011–2014 by the Houston Press Music Awards. Their frontman, Paul Ramirez, has been described as “one tasteful guitar player who always knows what licks to play” by Music News Houston.
Having a diverse scope of musical inspirations growing up, Ramirez set out to emanate as much of these influences in his music and live shows as possible. Since the band’s inception in 2011, they have been seamlessly melding many different genres and styles together in their live performances. The Paul Ramirez Band has already been recognized locally for combining these elements, with rave reviews from local press for 2012’s SEX WITH A DRAGON.
Currently, the Paul Ramirez Band are working on releasing a live CD, as well as plans to hit the studio in the fall to begin recording their sophomore studio release. Live From The MonaLisa Room will feature some new original tunes and some choice covers the band performs as well. Their second studio release will undoubtly pick up where Dragon left off, fluidly linking many
different genres together.
