You better but away your tea cups and bring out the shot glasses! Paul Ross Hensley is a master at creating country rockin melodies with hard fact lyrics that are meant to be pondered on tequila. Paul is a talented singer-songwriter who has been gifted with a strong hard-edged voice and the ability to craft songs that can be compared to Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson.

Biography

Paul Ross Hensley was influenced by music artists such as The Beatles, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash and Jimmy Buffet. At a young age, Paul taught himself the acoustic guitar and developed his strong and unique vocal style. He began performing in various country/rock bands, playing lead, rhythm guitar and singing in his early years. This was only temporary as Paul began focusing on songwriting and creating melodies and playing occasional acoustic solo venues while being a father and husband.

After the economic downturn in 2007, Paul began dedicating himself to writing meticulously and thoughtfully lyrics and creating memorable melodies in the country and rock genre. Eventually his work bore his debut album, Destitute Legend.

Many of the songs are lyrically and visually defined and speak of faith, sorrow, and love. Several of the tracks tell the good, challenging and the hopeful and one can see its monumental connection to the hardships people face in America and all over the world today. On a lighter note, there is also the well received novelty tune, "Backward Country Song" that is witty and entertaining. Lastly, the song Little Kelsey exemplifies Paul’s unorthodox and incomparable guitar playing execution similar to the late Michael Hedges.

Since the album’s release Paul has been featured on Capital Public Radio and Central Valley Business Times in California and has appeared on many music websites such as pressparty.com.

By releasing, Destitute Legend, Paul Ross Hensley's goal is to captivate and entertain his listeners with his diverse lyrics and vocal styles.

Lyrics

Best Teacher Of All

Written By: Paul Ross Hensley

I remember my first job interview
I didn’t write a resume like my dad told me to
When I told him that I didn’t get the job
He said if you’re gonna win in life, You gotta give all you got

Chorus

You'll never know 'till you've tried
Try, try again if you fall
and Son, you must always remember
that trials are the best teacher of all

Last night I had a blow out with my wife
My muddy boot tracks across the floor sparked one ugly fight
I could’ve stomped outside and slammed the door
But I got down on my knees and wiped my pride off the floor

Chorus

Bridge:

The hammer shatters glass but forges steel
You can’t conquer mountains crawling in the hills
I’ve come to believe life’s an attitude
If you win, lose or draw that depends on you

Repeat Chorus

City Of Angels

Written By: Paul Ross Hensley

Dad left me this dingy apartment
an empty fridge, and a welfare check
Howling sirens, and helicopters,
and my mother, strung out on the edge

Streets filled with red lights and high heels
basketball beneath cement skies
Gangs, guns, and drugs that deal,
a world where few survive...

Chorus
Welcome, to the City of Angels
and you won't find St. Peter here
they say the sun is always shining
but the dead of night's my way of life down here

On the Horizon, they live in mansions
they fancy cars, and shopping sprees
Gold tans and diamond-soaked fashions
that hide their lawless degrees...

But they'll never beg to step in my shoes
or scrounge for meals, in the moonlight
or feel the Hell, when their Courtroom rules
a grave of prison, before the age of 25!

Chorus 2
Welcome, to the City of Angels
and you won't find St. Teresa here
they say the sun is always shining
but the dead of night's my way of life down here

Backwards Country Song

Written By: Paul Ross Hensley

Now I've heard it said if you take a Rock song
and ya' play it in reverse
you hear the Devil talkin', and some say
that it's a curse
You hear screams, and voices, that fill you
full of fright
so I never have played a backward Rock song,
and I really don't care to try

Now on the other hand you can take a country song,
and you can play it in backward too.
They say it turns your life around,
and all your dreams come true
So one night, when I was down and out,
and I was feeling all alone
I pulled out a Johnny Cash album and played a
backwards Country song...

Chorus
Then my dog rose from the dead,
and my truck was running fine,
and one of my biggest problems,
was when to wind my fishing line.
Then my wife, well she came back home,
and all the beer was free,
and the jerk that used to be my boss,
went to work for me.

Well I couldn't believe what I'd heard,
it sounded too good to be true!
How my life could turn around from a
backward country tune
Now I could see if you found true love
or if ya' won some lottery
so it's easy for me to understand
how some folks don't believe.

Then one bar room night I was with a friend,
who was totally down and out.
His truck broke down, and he'd lost his job
and his wife she'd done kicked him out
so I told him to take a country song
and to play it in reverse
and the next time that I saw him again,
he slowly said these words...

Chorus 2
He said his dog rose from the dead,
and his truck was running fine,
and one of his biggest problems,
was when to wind his fishing line.
Well then his wife, well she called him home,
and all the beer was free,
and the jerk that used to be his boss,
lives out on the streets.

Chorus 3
So you can have your dog rise from the dead,
and your truck can run just fine,
and one of your biggest problems,
be when to wind your fishing line.
And have your wife, call you home,
and never feel alone,
and even tell your boss to get lost,
after playing, a backwards country song.

Paint Our Lives

Written By: Paul Ross Hensley

Thank you Lord for letting us be here
Day and night you are always near
Sharing your blue skies so high above
For giving us your gift of salvation

If we try all of us can win
If we ask you’ll teach us how to give
And spend our time the best way that we can
And spread our love far across the land

Chorus
Holy Lord paint our lives,
with love and grace,
through our hearts, and our minds
give us true Faith to find
The rich and poor, the weak and the blind

Thinking about the blessings you have shown
All the gifts and happiness we have known
In this life there is so little time
So we should thank you each day of our lives

Thinking how this great earth began
How you draw us to your master plan
And the day when, you'll return again
To test the works of every woman and every man

Repeat Chorus

Money's King

Written By: Paul Ross Hensley

Poor folks stand in welfare lines
Beggars hold work for food work signs
The middle class play lottery
and Rich folks live like slot machines

Politicians raise taxes
Smugglers run their drug traffic
Fairytales sell magazines
While swindlers pitch get rich quick schemes

Bridge
Seems every time I turn around,
Someone's racking credit up
Or laying money down

Chorus
You might wear chains
diamonds or gold
You may be a maid a slave a servant
or some high rise CEO
you might be a prince,
a princess or the queen
but around here
Money's King

The council takes bribes on the side
False preachers cash in on Christ
Billion dollar companies
Pay a slave wage to employees

Referees rig ball game scores
Fools make a killing off the war
Banks pass the buck on real estate
Lawyers break the laws they make

Bridge
Seems every time I turn around,
Someone's racking credit up
Or laying money down

Chorus
You might wear chains
diamonds or gold
You may be be a maid a slave a servant
or some high rise CEO
maybe a prince,
a princess or the queen
but around here
Money's King

She Teaches Me

Written By: Paul Ross Hensley

Kirsten owns an old wooden toy box
Her toys own the living room floor
After work, as I stroll up the sidewalk
She hides her smile right behind the front door

Chorus
Her favorite colors balloons
She knows her abc’s
She likes wearing mom's shoes
When she dances and sings
She knows how to spell love,
and she knows what it means
and in her own special way...
She teaches me

I planned on fishing Blue Lake last weekend
Till she said daddy please play with me
So we rode to the park and played in the sand
Made castles while sharing ice cream

Chorus

Bridge
While I'm mowing the yard
or playing guitar
She always spends her spare time

Saving candy and pictures for me
I guess the old saying's true
about love being blind...

Solo

Chorus

Little Kelsey

Written By: Paul Ross Hensley

She loves to rise, before the dawn
she'll sing and play all day long
Near nightfall, in the porchlight
she'll watch the birds, take to flight

Bridge
She drives me, crazy
She's my one baby

Chorus
With sparkling eyes, and a smile so sweet
I'll always pray, for my little Kelsey

Sometimes she wakes, from eerie dreams
and late at night, she'll run to me
But I'll leave a smile, on her face,
when I chase the ghosts away

Mathematician

Written By: Paul Ross Hensley

After a long dusty day
of work in the hot sun,
I always a the layoff check
cause I'm not the Boss's son

But you're still there with your long dark hair,
a cold brew and a warm meal
The only one who truly cares
about the way I feel

With gasoline, and groceries,
and taxes on the rise
our house nearing forclosure,
and we're down to our last dime

When I feel like this fallin world's
crashing down on me
you take my hand and help me stand
back upon my feet

Chorus
Well I'm no Mathematician
but I can count on you
when it comes to numbers
I don't know all the rules
but I know that you love me
by the things you say and do
I'm no Mathematician but I can count on you

Back in school, math wasn't my tool
now its a faded memory
Fractions and subtractions
were just numbers to me

But I've learned when it comes to love
one and one makes two
and I've learned there's no mountain,
that pure love cant move

Chorus

She Wears My Ring

Written By: Paul Ross Hensley

My yearbooks filled with faded faces
from my high school days
dream dates and dances
drifting smiles and football games

Pictures and signatures
and promises from friends
and the girl that swore she'd never drift
from my hands

Chorus
Friendships are like the ocean's
ever changing tide
mine always fade away
like waves on some shoreline
But I've found few remained
when I'd lost everything
unlike the friend of my lifetime
and she wears my ring

She holds my hopes and dreams
like their her long lost child
and mends our disagreements
with forgiveness and a smile

and I've learned when angry words
flirt with foolish pride
love brings forgiveness
each and every time

Chorus 2
Friendships are like the ocean's
ever changing tide
mine always wash away
like waves on some shoreline
But I've found few remain
when I've lost everything
unlike the friend of my lifetime
and she wears my ring

Bridge
Most my friends have come and gone
but their memories linger on and on

Solo
