BandPopEDM

I'm interested in writing catchy, mainstream pop with accessible but uncliched lyrics. No pop styles are off limits to me and I do everything from piano ballads to indie rock. I love the fact that I don't know what I will be writing three songs down the track. Gotta go, this is my floor .

Biography

I love the flash of excitement I get when writing a new song. It's the best feeling in the world.

I started playing piano when I was five and completed my Associate of Music diploma (piano) when I was 19. Then I studied communications (BA Comm) and writing (MA) while working as a journalist and teaching piano.

I've been writing music for about 15 years - but more seriously in the last couple. I regularly attend SongsAlive workshops to get feedback on my stuff and hear what other writers are doing.

I'm interested in most pop genres from top 40, through to jazz, dance, ballads, R&B and indie rock.

Great Date, Wrong Guy

Written By: Paul Somervile

A1
A warmish night with our jackets off
A pleasant dinner, the lights down soft
You pour a drink and make a toast to us
Wine and laughter, it’s all okay
We don’t run out of things to say
But my heart’s not churning, don’t know why
Great date, wrong guy

A2
We get the cheque and you pay the lot
Suggest we drive to a quieter spot
Love songs playing on the radio
A handsome man, quite obviously
I’m not sure what’s wrong with me
I draw a blank when you look in my eyes
Great date, wrong guy

B
If any head could rule its heart, mine surely would
And stop me if I’m here presuming more than I should
But I have to say it, though it might offend
We’ll never be more than friends

A3
Then it’s weird, you’re quiet for a while
But soon you show me a little smile
Nod and tell me that you understand
A kiss on the cheek, again you’ve shown
That this loss is all my own
We’re perfect on paper, but I can’t lie
Great date, wrong guy

Instrumental

B repeats

A warmish night with our jackets off
A pleasant dinner, the lights down soft
But my heart’s not churning, don’t know why
Great date, wrong guy
Great date, wrong guy
Great date, wrong guy

Let's stay in bed

Written By: Paul Somerville

Let’s stay in bed

Bleary eyes and weary limbs
At the window ledge the daylight’s coming in
Reach out a hand and it finds you
Seems all last night’s dreams are coming true

Then your soft sweet lips caress my ear
Whispering words I want to hear

Let’s stay in bed, just stay in bed
Let the lonely people rush around instead
It’s warm here in bed, so lay down your head
We’ll get much more done this way
Let’s stay in bed all day

Let the Tuesday traffic roar
When you’re breathing close it’s easy to ignore
Business hours belong to us
Guess the night is just not long enough

When the only work I really want to do
Is to lie right here touching you

Let’s stay in bed, just stay in bed
While the driven people strive to get ahead
It’s warm here in bed, so lay down your head
We’ll get much more done this way
Let’s stay in bed all day

We’ll get much more done this way
Have a little fun along the way
Your happiness my only pay
Let’s stay in bed all day

Da da da da …

Drunk on your love

Written By: Paul Somerville

My mouth is dry, there’s blood in my eyes
At it all night, still want more in the morning
Hair in a mess so I guess I’m obsessed
Lethal and free, you should come with a warning

Like a drunk at AA, I’ve been counting the days
Since my last night of release and affection
Please take me home, don’t want one for the road
Let’s get hammered and spent in a different direction

Pour me more of you
I can’t stop at one or two
I want to get drunk on your love
Trashed, smashed, off my face
I could drink a whole damn case
I want to get drunk on your love

Room spinning round, I’m lost and I’m found
Just one more time baby over and over
Flying so high, we look down at the sky
Soon I’ll forget what it’s like to be sober

Kissing you hard and you kiss me back harder
Every touch is a film in slow motion
Fruit from the vine, you taste sweeter than wine
You go to my head and I drown in your ocean

Pour me more of you
I can’t stop at one or two
I want to get drunk on your love
Trashed, smashed, off my face
I could drink a whole damn case
I want to get drunk on your love

No more chardonnay
I can’t stand it anyway
I want to get drunk on your love
Your flesh will suffice
Serve it straight up, hold the ice
I want to get drunk on your love

Life has been caging me
Bored and broken without your love
Can’t you see what I need?
Too much is never, never enough

Good old-fashioned love

Written By: Paul Somerville

Some people say that they’re happy alone
They sleep quite soundly in bed on their own
They don’t want dramas they’d rather be free
Oh, but that won’t do me

Others go after their casual affairs
Chasing new lovers like musical chairs
They want the ocean but not past the knee
Oh, but that’s not for me

Just one chance at a romance with the lot
I’ll be there like a shot

Good old-fashioned love
Hot impassioned love
Retro-looking, tried and true
But it always feels brand new
Sensitive and tough
Good old-fashioned love
You’re just waiting in the dark
Till that spark finds your heart

Some people settle for less than the best
Lower their standards, take what they can get
Any cheap drink becomes their cup of tea
Oh, but they don’t fool me

Give me something real—fireworks I can feel
I just want the whole deal

Good old-fashioned love
Hot impassioned love
If you shed a tear by it
Think how you got here by it
Sensitive and tough
Good old-fashioned love
You know life’s about to start
When that spark finds your heart

Lust for life

Written By: Paul Somerville

I’m gonna be in lust for life
Wanting you just like tonight
Billion-year-old stars burn bright
And I’m gonna be in lust for my whole life

Too many hearts
Get one deep cut and give right up
Others find love
That burns white hot then turns to rust
Some waste away
Sharing lives that gather dust

We’ll be the chosen few
I’m staying young with you

I’m gonna be in lust for life
Wanting you just like tonight
Billion-year-old stars burn bright
And I’m gonna stay in lust for life

I’m gonna be in lust for life
Wanting you just like tonight
Billion-year-old stars burn bright
And I’m gonna be in lust for my whole life

Some people peak
And don’t try to climb any higher
Others find peace
Letting go of their desire
But you got me burning
I don’t want to quench this fire

The more you’re showing me
The more I want to see

Never gonna change never gonna fade never gonna
Even if we change we’ll feel just the same always wanna

Metrosexual man

Written By: Paul Somerville

Metrosexual man you got the look just right
Singlet full of muscle, Diesel jeans too tight
Almost on the dance floor, you place your bets each way
First you’re glancing over then you look away
Metrosexual man you know I like what I see
Can’t you be straight with me?

Metrosexual man you act like it’s a choice
Dancing with the ladies, smoking with the boys
Sizing up the talent, one eye on your phone
Then you wander over and ask if I’m alone
Metrosexual man is this who you wanna be?
Can’t you be straight with me?

Don’t want to generalise
You can like fashion and not like guys
But I see where you go with those eyes
Too cool to say I’m hot?
Or freaking out when you say you’re not?
Tell me do you want what I got
Cause when I move close you don’t back off
Or ask me to stop

Metrosexual man you’re talking like a mate
But do you want a lover or am I just the bait
You say you do some acting, I guess that it makes sense
But when it comes to show-time you keep me in suspense
Metrosexual man why you gotta tease?
Do you want attention or do you want me?
Metrosexual man it’s well after three
Please, please be straight with me

Someone who needs me

Written By: Paul Somerville

I woke up this morning like the first day of my life
Ran out in the sunshine, knew I was free
Maybe I still love you, but I have a little pride
The someone I need next time will be someone who needs me

I’d stay in London, I told you I’d wait
I’d even follow you up to Shanghai
Longing to hear: it’s never too late
Living for you as years went by

I saw the world through the prism of you
Rubbed my eyes till your picture dissolved
Now it all looks exciting and new
My state of mind isn’t yours to control

I kept my life on ice in case you changed your mind
You messed my heart around just one too many times

But I woke up this morning like the first day of my life
Ran out in the sunshine, knew I was free
Maybe I still love you, but I have a little pride
The someone I need next time will be someone who needs me

Probably I should thank you for not being there to turn to
I learned to trust myself
One by one the little things you didn’t ever do
Showed me what I want is somebody else

And I woke up this morning like the first day of my life
Ran out in the sunshine, knew I was free
Maybe I still love you, but I have a little pride
The someone I need next time will be someone who loves me
And I woke up this morning like the first day of my life
Ran out in the sunshine, knew I was free
Maybe I still love you, but I have a little pride
The someone I need next time will be someone who needs me

Hot like summer

Written By: Paul Somerville

Hot like summer

It’s the hottest night of the year since you got here
You stand at the bar, toying with those ice cubes
I swim in your olive skin, watch you mix my gin
True, I don’t know you, but I know I’d like to
(So would you like to?)

Please don’t tease
It’s like a thousand degrees
When you’re near me
It’s hot like summer
You’re hot like summer
Let me know
I’m burning head to toe
Yes or no, girl
Will you be my lover?
Will you be my lover?

So damn cute, I look away from you
But your tight little tube top keeps me drinking
You don’t give much away, guess it’s a game you play
Smouldering eyes hide what you’re thinking
(So what you thinking?)

Please don’t tease
It’s like a thousand degrees
When you’re near me
It’s hot like summer
You’re hot like summer
Let me know
I’m burning head to toe
Yes or no, girl
Will you be my lover?
Will you be my lover?

Sunday breaks with a tequila headache
Forecast says it’s gonna be a scorcher
So come on, you gonna ring, or was it just a one-night thing?
Summer without you is like torture

Be who you are

Written By: Paul Somerville

Be who you are

You wear your cool clothes as if I expect designer gear
You colour your hair and say what you think I want to hear
You pile on make up but you look perfect when you wake up

Why do you try to hide
What you think I won’t like?
Undiscovered star
Be who you are
That’s what I want
Every face, every mood
Let me see all of you
Beautifully bizarre
Be who you are

Don’t fight the tears, I want to hold you when you cry
Tell me your fears, I’m strong enough for two tonight
If you’re not open, I can’t mend you when you’re broken

Why do you try to hide
What you think I won’t like?
Undiscovered star
Be who you are
That’s what I want
Every face, every mood
Let me see all of you
Beautifully bizarre
Be who you are

Rare like a Picasso
You don’t have to be the best
Drop the façade
Stop trying so hard
Why can’t you see I’m already impressed?

Why do you try to hide
What you think I won’t like?
Undiscovered star
Be who you are
That’s what I want
Every face, every mood
Let me see all of you
Beautifully bizarre
Be who you are

To an unknown soul mate

Written By: Paul Somerville

To an unknown soul mate

I have not had the pleasure
Of making your acquaintance
But somehow I know you’re somewhere
Hundreds of conversations
Thousands of invitations
None of them have led me there

But I close my eyes
And dream you’re here with me tonight
Do you ever try it?
And when I’m calling you
Could you be calling me too?

Every moment’s gonna bring me a little closer
To you my unknown soul mate
I spend my whole life waiting, yours in anticipation
Don’t be too late

I’m talking to the ceiling
But I’m not going crazy
Sometimes my sense of you is strong
But I can’t hold a feeling
I need to hold the real thing
So why’s it taking you so long?

I wish your eyes
Were right here staring into mine
But time’s on my side
Each cold night I go through
I’m one night nearer to you

And every moment’s gonna bring me a little closer
To you my unknown soul mate
I spend my whole life waiting, yours in anticipation
Please, please don’t be too late
And until we’re together, I write this lonely letter
To you my unknown soul mate
But if it never finds you, I don’t know what I might do

Don’t make me settle for a lesser soul mate’s charms
Don’t want to nestle in an almost soul mate’s arms, no …
