Park Bench Prophets Funky, fearless and out-there: That’s the best way to describe local three-piece Park Bench Prophets, and really, it doesn’t even come close to fully encapsulating their sound. With bass, organ and drums courtesy of Tony Cicero of Ventura’s instrumental surf kings the Phantom Riders, they’re locked somewhere between Medeski, Martin & Wood and some avant-garde rapper that’s still toiling in the underground, yet to be heard by mainstream ears. Some say it may seem impossible for such a groundbreaking act to come out of this county, but it has. After taking a brief hiatus, the group is back, performing at the Experi-Mental Café on June 12. - Ventura County Reporter

Approaching the essence of urban groove jazz, both old and new school, the group represents an eclectic assembly of musical interests and backgrounds. Combining elements of funk, hip-hop, Latin, soul and groove jazz with their passion and talent for playing, Park Bench Prophets invite you into their playground of sound. After many years performing in various groups together, Johno Dunn on Bass, Space Kyle on Tenor Sax, Erik "Rev. Z" Szabo, on Keyboards and, of course, Tony Cicero on Drums & Percussion have formed a new version of PBP which even more into the sound of organ driven groups like MMW, Galactic, the Meters & Sugarman 3 etc...
