"Pedrito Angel y su Maferefun"

The key to the ride is the "fun" in Maferefun. This tight little band is led by composer-arranger, singer and tres player Pedrito Angel, who was born and raised in Cuba before settling in Montreal a few years ago. Angel is continuing proof that authentic Cuban culture, unblemished because of the U.S. embargo, courses through the veins of every rhythmically minded Cuban. In other words, this is the real stuff. Though his vocals stray once or twice Angel's percolating salsas are delightful and involving. Percussion, bass, horns and piano hold eveything together in proud Cuban fashion and the result is not only eminently listenable, but, in fact, pretty darn good. In support of the local scene, check this one out at selected stores (including Archambault).

Bio

Pedrito Angel Gonzalez

Born Pedro Gonzalez Isasi
on November 01, 1968, La Havana, Cuba.

His beginnings:
Pedrito grew up in an incredibly musically rich environment, in which he was influenced by such famous personalities as Benny More, Celia Cruz, Enrique Jorrrin ( creator of cha cha cha music ), Tatagwine, Arturo Sandoval, Aldaberto Alvarez - el Rey del Son, Chucho Valdez, Tito Puentes, Los Papines, El Maestro Chabalonga, Pello El Afrokan, Carlos Enbale, to name a few. This strong Cuban musical heritage led him to love and work with music at a very early age.

His father, Pedro Gonzalez was himself a professional musician and a well-known and much-traveled guitarist, "sonero" and "tres player". He was part of a band "Tataguine Y sus tataguinitos" and later formed part of a duo named "Sauce". Pedrito's mother, Angela Isasi was herself a good singer. Pedrito was therefore inclined to love and enjoy music since he carried it in his blood and was influenced from inside his mother's womb.

1975 - His father started to teach Pedrito solfege and guitar playing at 7 years old
Unlike most 7-years olds Pedrito did not mind these lessons and the practicing it involved. On the contrary he would get up at dawn and find a quiet spot so as not to wake up the rest of the family and practice all his father had taught him.

His musical life as an amateur:

1978 - As of 10 years old Pedrito mastered the guitar and started accompanying different singers in his neighbourhood. He also started taking part in various amateur groups as accompanying guitarist and singer as well as soloist.

1980 - "Victoria" was his first amateur band but he also took part as soloist and guitar player in various duos, trios, sextetos and choirs as well.
In school he took part in many cultural activities and competitions in all the provinces across Cuba as well as in national festivals where he won many awards for best interpretations.

1985 - At 17, Pedrito became bass-player for a semi-professional band called "Iya" which belonged to a house of culture. "Iya", a band who not only played salsa but Afro-Cuban music, was made up of 15 excellent musicians. These musicians are nowadays still very well known throughout Cuba.
That same year he was also invited to accompany as guitarist well-known romantic singers such as Elena Burkes, Marielena Pena, Alfredo Martinez, Marlene Despaigne, Santiago Iglesia, among others.

1986 - At age 18, FAR, the Cuban army called him to fulfill his duties for the next 3 years. Even in the army Pedrito took part in various bands where he found and exchanged many musical ideas and developed experience.

His musical life as a professional:

1989 - Pedrito entered the National School of Professional Preparation ( Escuela de Superasion Profesional) called Ignacio Cervantes where he studied professional guitar, solfege, music appreciation, etc... He continued his musical education in another school called Felix Varela where he graduated with an "intermediate level in guitar" and "complementary piano" diploma.

That same year he started as bass player in a band called "Mulemba" which gave many varied shows highlighting the different styles of Cuban culture - such as salsas, Afro-Cuban music, country music - for the tourism industry in Varadero.

1990 - His father, his great friend and teacher, asked him to join him in a duo as principal singer and accompanying guitarist. His first job with his father was for a well-known radio program called "Allegria de Sobre Mesa" (happiness on the table). He took part as well in other radio programs such as "Radio Taino", "Un Domingo con Rosillo" among others as well as in television programs.

Afterwards the duo called "Duo Habana" traveled to Varadero where they worked for the next 5 years in all the tourist establishments - hotels, restaurants, etc...

Later they began playing in Havana at the famous "Bodeguita del Medio" and continued playing there for the next 3 years. They also played in other famous local spots such as "El Floridita", "Nacional Marina Hemingway", "El Patio", "La Mina", "Café Paris" and in hotels such as "Habana Libre", "Deauville", "Presidente", etc...

1997 - Pedrito formed a six-member band with his father and his friend Diosdado Esquivel Diaz (El Abuelo). He asked a local singer Maria Belen to join them and named the group: "Maria Belen y Megason".
That same year Pedrito and his group traveled to France and Spain for a 6-months-tour. The tour was a success and they even recorded a CD in Bayonne, France. The group played in the Bayonne Municipal Theatre of Bayonne, in the Havana Café and took part in the well-known festival "Toros y Salsa" alongside famous bands such as "Isaac Delgado" de Cuba, "Gran Combo" de Puerto Rico, "Conexion Salsera" de Cuba.
They flooded with their music the neighbouring towns, Southern part of France as far as Toulouse, Nice and even in Grande-Bretagne and in pa
