"Foghorn Records"

From the opening track 'your own life' and its chilled out reggae - ish grooves through to the more laid back singer/songwriter and even Jazzy tunes the notion of easy listening comes to mind.

This album would be the perfect companion on a retreat or holiday where you just want to lie in a hammock
or sit by the pool and many of the tunes somehow create an islandesque feel and imagery.

Some good songs and very tasteful production that doesnt get in the way of the music all sit together through a variety of backings
to create some wonderful and always relaxed vibes that nicely reference Pene's native land but could easily cross over into a more mainstream market.

Comparisons - Nora Jones, Jack Johnson, Joni Mitchell.

Definitely recommended listening.

Calling From Waimanu

This album is Pene’s second release & continues in the same vein with 6 more gems from this talented singer/songwriter. The easy feeling it creates would fit in with any laid back/chilled event.

Seven Long Days has a catchy beat on a gently drifting journey through life's experiences. Lyrically it has an overall sense of completion. The arrangement is excellent with good mixing & production throughout the song. Overall the track is a comfortable catchy song with a smooth flow.

Swan Song in G Major is a soft folk song which cleverly paints a picture & tells a story about a graceful black swan. This is reflected in the graceful delivery & delicate melody lines to complete the image.

No One starts with a steady tempo which captures you from the beginning. It creates that certain sense of familiarity which all good songs have. This easy listening pop song will sit in your memory & you will suddenly find yourself humming the melody next time you’re feeling good.

Until I Saw Your Smile has a smooth wind swept feel to it which whisks the listener up on a gentle breeze & floats them through time & space. The obvious love shown in the lyrics leaves a warm feeling inside, where all love songs rest.

Firefly is another love song with easy lyrics & a gentle pace, the light & shade make for an excellent variation & grab the listeners attention all over again. The chorus has a friendly sing along feel which compels you to join in.

You’ve Changed starts with a delicate guitar plucked lightly until the vocals take the listeners focus away. This soft balled about loves trials & tribulations will touch your soul & heighten your senses.

"Flowers and Frolic by Pene Kingsford is a CD composed of gentle easygoing, easy listening music. Pene’s easy style and clear diction makes this a good addition to your library of music. There is a gentle Jazz style to many of the songs on this album. “Lily” is particularly interesting in this multi-styled CD combining rap, with both female and male voices and the female vocal. The introduction and back up in “Fibre and the Weave” bring a slightly different flavor to this collection. Both compositions and vocal works are strong and the pitch perfect vocals are a pleasure. You may want to add this CD to your collection for those lazy, rainy days"

"nz review"

Quite a special album this.
IN a word? Evocative? Yes - that's probably the best way to describe it.

I like the arrangements. Done with panache and a sense of knowing what succeeds with these things. It's a mix of experience and intuition at work here.
Great playing. You sense each player is working in sympathy with the others. It's a consistent feel too. And pretty good dynamics.

All in all a great record that I hope many people get to hear and enjoy.

Bio

Passionate and graceful, New Zealand singer-songwriter Pene Kingsford is a welcome respite in a musical scene filled with fly by night pop. This Little River woman is enjoying fruitful success in her homeland, and a growing fan base in Australia, Canada and the U.S.A. The secret for Pene Kingsford has been maintaining her integrity with her music and working hard at developing a solid network rather than take any opportunity that has come her way. Her rich and sincere songs speak for themselves and allow for a fulfilling audience experience.

Kingsfords new album, ‘calling from waimanu’ retains the beautiful melodies and thought provoking lyrics of her debut album, ‘flowers and frolic’, which has received generous airplay overseas.

’calling from waimanu’ sees Pene Kingsford producing the album and playing guitar on all tracks. Up until now, Pene has focused on singing and songwriting leaving instrumentation to other musicians. Now however, the freedom playing guitar offers Pene is to create a more authentic ‘Pene’ sound, capturing the essence of her groove. The strength of these songs highlights Penes’ confidence and development of musical style.
