Bio

Peon came together in 2009 initially as a “research project” exploring the challenges of realtime improvising between man and machine. Sam was at the time undertaking post-grad study in this field, at the Victorian College of the Arts and asked Ronny to play the skeptic and to find holes in his musicmaking theories.

Sam Price

Before studying the drums in earnest in his late teens, Sam’s spent much time mixing on two turntables. His father’s career as a radio journalist provided him with convenient access to a Uher reel-to-reel, facilitating happy hours of tape experimentation. This is also how he came to gain access to an early DigiDesign Sound Designer system. The leap to digital proved too much for his dad; Sam was drafted in to make the edits and explore the possibilities of this new technology. It would be years until digital systems would become affordable to the average musician but Sam had plenty to occupy him with learning the craft of playing the drums. Gigs ranging from straight-up rock, through Scottish Kayleigh dances and Jazz club dates followed. Also local and national radio play and sessions included 33 Jazz records and Ninja Tune records. Relocating to Melbourne in 2004, Sam focussed on his primary interests; pushing instrumental technique and the possibilities of emerging digital technologies. Post grad study at the VCA lead Sam to settle on the real-time audio synthesis environment SuperCollider as his main development platform for electro-acoustic interaction and improvisation. He has released music on the Downstream and New Weird Australia labels and composed for theatre (Melbourne Fringe, St Kilda Festival).
