Lyrics

Till the Tolls of Twelve (Cinderella)

Written By: Peopod

What happens if the heroine of the eponymous fairytale, trapped in the arms of her prince, fails to make it out of the ballroom when the clock strikes twelve? What could go wrong with an angel appearing one day to grant a dream of beauty and grandeur? Nothing, except that when this vanishes we're left wondering: about the angel, the dream, and even Cinderella.

Cinderella was her name
She had a dream and it wasn’t very small
She dreamt one day she met an angel bright
Who’d take pity on her plight and grant her wish
All while washing the cold hard floor one day

And so she saw what she saw and all
All she wished was to become someone again
A someone who could somebody be
Who’d take flight from her pity
And plant her wishbone deep inside the ground
Yet she knew it would end some other way

12 O’clock the angel said
And everything you have will vanish again
Just like the last time when you were at the ball
You will disappear with nothing at all

She glided past the silken moonlight
A dryad emerging from a dream of allure
Illusion never knew a feast of such delight
As the night drew in resplendent hues
Of ochre and cream
Poised to be the envy of her dream

Dancing in the arms of love
A knight gallant who would besotted fall
And fain would he hold her
Till the tolls of twelve are done
And undone she tries in vain to steal away
The lustre of her beauty turned to grey

What would it take to win a trip to the zoo?
What dire consequences could thus ensue?
If dreams and states of dreaming
Were to be true
Would you disappear with nothing at all?

Skidmarks

Written By: Peopod

Not all exits are equally graceful, and some people just know how to make those turns rougher than others. Trails on tarmac; skidmarks in the heartland. Is there a more awkward place to be than innocuously "More than strangers less than friends...?" Based on a series of poems, this slow jazz ballad glimmers with the emotional tumult of broken relationship.

Past or nothing
In the unconscious darkness
Winding around the dizzying
Mountain path of my heart
You left skidmarks
When you went away that morning
Walking in
Walking out

Traveling late tonight
Like so many tired people on the road
Tracing out the blackened lines
Trying to find some way home
You left skidmarks on my heart
When you went away that morning --
Walking in
Walking out

And now, here we are
More than strangers less than friends
With even less to say, and
You go suddenly silent
While I wonder
At the wind that led you, passing,
Walking in
Walking –

Out of the sunlight and into the rain
Into the sadness remembrance brings
Down in the shadows
That shimmer so dimly beneath the light

Out of the shelter and into the storm
It’s there where I’ve lost you time lingers on
Down in the memories
That glimmer so darkly beneath the night

You left skidmarks
When you went away that morning --
Walking in
Walking out
Walking in
Walking out

Summer Of Life

Written By: Peopod

Life is exquisite in its various seasons, a beauty made more achingly real in the winters of life when we come to paradoxically recognise the true value of what we no longer possess. Yet would we and could we change anything? Listen to the profoundly familiar in this bittersweet ballad of unspoken affection, young love, and missed opportunity.

The summer waves of halcyon days come
Tumbling to the shore
Lapping in the gentlest cadence
Of memories young at war

If yesterday could stay forever
If time could wait a year
If we could still be there together
I’d live it all once more

Yet if I were given half the chance
To turn this winter’s tide
I would only change the ending story
And never say goodbye

Can you tell if I were somebody
Who liked to reminisce
About what seemed so ordinary
Life inside a dream

If somewhere in that summer of life, I
Just could have spoken true
Oh to have known just how much I loved you
What you’d come to mean

And if you had asked if I would hope
To have us stay this way?
Now I know the answer to the question:
I’d never say goodbye

And if this winter twilight
Drew on halcyon days
My only recollection
A still deep summer haze

The days we spent so idly
Watching clouds go by
Though now they ring a distant,
A fading lullaby
