"[Audio] Perfeck Strangers ft. Sha Stimuli & Prince Po – “Dreams Pt. 2" (Prod: Goldentone)"

Perfeck Strangers (Promise & Dan-e-o) just released an alternate version of “Dreams”, this time featuring Sha Stimuli and Prince Po (formerly of Organized Konfusion with Pharoahe Monch). Goldentone handles the production on this one, providing a keys-laced backdrop for the emcees as Yonatan Watts lends his soulful vocals to the chorus. For all their talents, I really believe Promise and Dan-e-o deserve more recognition than they’re currently receiving. The talent is undeniable, and their message is well worth sharing. Suffice it to say, I’ll continue to check for them in the future. "Perfeck Strangers - Interview"

The reference to a fondly remembered '80s sitcom notwithstanding, there's nothing dated about Perfeck Strangers. The pairing of two seemingly disparate MCs is nothing new to the genre, but Canadian hip-hop solo vets Dan-e-o and Promise make it sound fresh and unexplored at the same time.Despite their dissimilar styles, the chemistry between the two is well defined and there's an overriding sense that Series Premiere is intended as the first episode, with more to come.

Why is now the perfect time to drop the Series Premiere?
Dan-e-o: One of the reasons we're called Perfeck Strangers is that we're both perfectionists; we were hooking up twice a week writing tracks and that was the easy and fun part. The reason the album is coming out now is that the writing and recording process was so quick, it was all the little things: we've since secured distribution and management, mixed it and remixed and did different photo shoots as well. Everything that we did for this album was to make a perfect type of project that we both feel 100-percent, double thumbs up about.

One gets the vibe from the album that today's hip-hop needs a more classic approach. Would you agree?
Promise: That's definitely the vibe, especially with our single, "Come Back Home." We're kind of going around looking for hip-hop and asking it to come back home, "it's been a while since we've heard from you"-type thing.

How would you describe the sound? What vibe were you going for?
Dan-e-o: We come from two different backgrounds: I grew up being that hardened battle MC and street rapper, whereas P comes from a more soulful background. Meshing our musical tastes is what makes the sound of a Perfeck Strangers record. It's music that comes from the heart and is substance heavy. - Exclaim!

"Life after Drake isn’t ridiculous for Perfeck Strangers"

t takes guts for a hip-hop duo to rest a really thoughtful album on a premise that sort of seems like a joke, and pull it off triumphantly unscathed. Established solo artists Dan-e-o and Promise have done just that in naming themselves Perfeck Strangers, an homage to the popular 1980s sitcom Perfect Strangers, which followed the slapstick exploits of odd couple Balki Bartokomous and his hapless cousin Larry Appleton. Lest anyone think it’s a coincidence, they’ve named their new debut full-length Series Premiere, and even devote the first song, “Perfeck,” to in-jokes that fans of the show will appreciate.

“Perfect Strangers just happens to be, if not the funniest, in my top three funniest sitcoms ever,” Dan-e-o gushes. “I found it hilarious and the back-and-forth between the two characters was very original. I know that when Promise and I came together, we went through several name ideas, even going halfway through making this record without having one. We settled on Perfeck Strangers because we both loved that show but also because it spoke to our differences.”

In "Perfeck," Dan-e-o plays the role of the wild, crazy outgoing Balki, while noted engineer/producer/MC Promise is the more straight-laced, organized Larry, which apparently comes pretty close to reflecting the artists’ actual personalities. “That sitcom is one of the few with a duo cast where both main characters shine equally,” Promise explains. “That kinda works well with our group because we’re both the main characters. We share everything here.”

Perfeck Strangers knew that naming themselves so would be an automatic recall of the show so, with the song “Perfeck,” they tackled the reference head on before anyone else could make Larry and Balki jokes about them. It’s a savvy move from the clever, self-aware team, who first made waves when a little-known Canadian MC named Drake spat the second verse in an early, 2010 single called “Work to Do.”

“Me and Drake became friends on the set of Degrassi,” Promise recalls. “A mutual friend introduced us because they knew that Drake loved hip-hop and was writing, and they admired what I did. So we were introduced and he asked me to rap for him and he liked it and he read some stuff that he was writing and I liked it.

“He had never recorded at the time, so I brought him to my studio and we just started working and, much like me and Dan, the chemistry was good so we just did a bunch of tracks. I engineered some of his early mixtape work before Comeback Season and Room for Improvement and all those early Drake tracks where he was more rapping than singing. And then a couple of years ago, everybody knows the story by now, he got linked up with Lil Wayne, Wayne brought him out and that was that.”

Though he hasn’t been in touch with Drake since he became one of the most celebrated rap artists of all time, Promise is happy for his old friend’s success. When asked whether or not Drizzy’s stratospheric rise has been particularly beneficial for Perfeck Strangers, he pauses.

“Maybe by raising awareness for Toronto as a whole but not any direct success,” he says finally. “When we did that Perfeck Strangers joint and it leaked on YouTube, it got an excess number of views because of Drake’s involvement. And people ask about it in interviews but we’re not getting booked because of it.”

The lack of such opportunities doesn’t seem to be phasing the level heads of Perfeck Strangers, who are doing their own thing and quickly moving on to the next one.

“We’ve already started sifting through production for our next album,” Dan-e-o says proudly. “By the very nature of the title, Series Premiere, we’re implying that it is just the beginning. That being said, we’re both very hard-working solo artists as well, and I think this is one of the things that really pushes Perfeck Strangers’ identity to the forefront, as a super duo. We both have videos and full-lengths coming out, but I can definitely say this is only the beginning for us.”

See Perfeck Strangers perform at Big Ticket (inside Velvet Underground) in Toronto on Friday, July 13.

PERFECK STRANGERS

Chemicals, nitro glycerine and gas will explode when mixed together. The same is said about Hip Hop's newest dynamic duo, Perfeck Strangers! Joining forces after years of blessing eardrums as impeccably brilliant soloists, veteran Toronto emcees Dan-e-o and Promise are now tackling the world of music as a tandem.

Dan-e-o first came into prominence with his debut single, “Dear Hip Hop”. Released through EMI on Beat Factory's RapEssentials Volume One in 1996, the track is documented as a “Canadian Hip Hop classic”! Even without major mainstream notoriety, Dan-e-o's subsequent solo albums, The Book of Daniel (2000) and See No Evil, Hear No Evil (2004) have cemented his reputation as one of the world's most elite emcees.

Known for his potent lyrical content, Promise focuses primarily on life, love and the
consciousness of mankind. He’s certainly no stranger to the microphone.
His debut solo album, More Than Music (2008), boasts guest appearances by Montell Jordan, Elzhi of Slum Village, Royce Da 5'9” and more. Promise's sophomore effort, Awakening (2011), further highlights his incredible prowess as a rap artist and songwriter.

It’s easy to say that Perfeck Strangers are an unlikely pair, but when listening to their music you would think they have been rhyming together for years. Both accomplished rappers in their own rights, their union presents a “perfeck” melding of talent in the vein of Hip Hop's most heralded duos, such as Black Star, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest and Little Brother. Dan-e-o and Promise have even been compared to legendary tag-teams like EPMD, Das EFX and most recently the Jay Z and Kanye West partnering for the way they effortlessly flip lines back and forth with each other.

In the summer of 2010, Dan-e-o and Promise's first single as Perfeck Strangers was leaked to the internet. Entitled “Work To Do”, the Isley Brothers-inspired track takes a comical approach to discussing the duo's struggles in the rap game. The release also includes an appearance by Hip Hop heavyweight, Drake and the song's YouTube post garnered thousands of plays within days of it being leaked.

The imPerfeck spelling of the word “perfect” in the group's name speaks to their admittance that the two are mortals, not without their shortcomings. Acknowledging a higher power as both their life source and primary inspiration,
the duo has set out on a mission to provide the world with what they consider a much needed resurgence of substance-heavy music.

In March 2012 they made their Series Premiere LP available as a free download thru Urbnet Records. In May of 2012, Series Premiere made it to #1 on EarShots National Hip Hop chart. Videos for their hit singles “Ghetto” and the documentary style “Stay Me” can be found on online. With more on the way, Perfeck Stranger is also featured on Urbnet’s Underground Hip-Hop Volume 7. and Certified vol. 2. So Stay alert and keep your ears to the street for the perfect Hip Hop group, Perfeck Strangers!
