PESAWAT is a Malaysian indie rock band based in Ampang, Selangor, Malaysia formed in 2005. The band consists of Jipie (vocals, guitar, piano), Kudux (drums, backing vocals), Nizam Camel (guitar, backing vocals), Mann (bass) and Danial Nor (synthesizer). They call themselves “PESAWAT”, which means “airplane” to reflect their fast and loud music and to symbolise their dream to bring their music across the world.

PESAWAT made their way into the public spotlight in November 2008 after releasing their first single called “Mirage”. It has received rave reviews nationwide and even across South East Asia. The song skyrocketed to no.1 after only two weeks debuting on FlyFM Campurchart. Mirage then gained a lot of attention from local and regional radio stations like XFM, HOTFM, EraFM, SuriaFM, KLFM, Singapore’s RiaFM, and Indonesia’s OZFM.

In May 2009, PESAWAT marked history by launching their first music video for their first single- Mirage on an actual airplane in collaboration with Channel [V], Malaysia Airlines, Malaysia Airport and Astro. The event created a huge buzz for PESAWAT by becoming the first band to hold a showcase at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) departure gate and the first band to launch a music video on an airplane (MAS Boeing 777). The launch was later broadcasted by Channel [V] in Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia. Their music video ‘Mirage’ is directed by Rewan Ishak has since been aired regularly on Channel [V] and MTV Asia as well.

PESAWAT released two more singles several months later - their first English track called “Excuse Me” and their second Malay track called “Rasional Emosional”. Both songs became instant hits. Excuse me conquered the no.1 spot for three weeks in a row on Hitz.FM and FlyFM, while Rasional Emosional was on heavy rotation on XFM, MuzikFM, SarawakFM, KLFM and EraFM.

In the inaugural Shout! Awards 2009 which was broadcasted live on 8TV, PESAWAT was nominated for Best New Act and they were also one of the performers who became the highlight of the show.

They were also nominated for the Best Pop/Indie Rock Act in Junksound Awards 2009 and in the same year, Mirage gained a spot in the Muzik Muzik Semi -Final.

In early 2010, PESAWAT was nominated for the Song of the Year Category for their song “Excuse me” (HITZ.FM) and “Rasional Emosional” (XFM) in VIMA Awards 2010. PESAWAT bagged the Song of the Year Award for their song “Excuse Me” and they were also awarded the Best Freaking Act of the Year uncontested in VIMA Awards 2010.

In addition, they were also nominated in four categories (namely, the Best Band, the Talented New Artist, the Best New Band, and the Best Song categories for their song “Bingit”) in the ROTTW Music Poll 2009.
In the Shout! Awards 2010, PESAWAT marked another achievement by having “Mirage” nominated for Best Music Video.

PESAWAT’s fourth single titled “Bingit” was chosen by Twisties as the theme song for “Twisties Bingit” campaign in late 2009. Twisties Bingit is a reality TV show sponsored by Twisties (Malaysia’s no.1 snacks) to find the best rock band in Malaysia. The campaign started with a nationwide tour where PESAWAT became the guest performer for the campaign at all venues. It was followed by 10 episodes of TV programme which was aired on 8TV. Bingit became another hit single for PESAWAT as it achieved the no.1 spot on Radio ArdanFM (Indonesia) for four weeks while tearing up radio charts on OZFM (Indonesia), HardRockFM (Indonesia), 99ersFM (Indonesia), Radio3 RTHK (Hong Kong) and local radio stations as well, like XFM, HotFM, and KLFM.

PESAWAT continued their relationship with Twisties and simultaneously marked another achievement by becoming the first band to be involved in a guerilla flash mob to commemorate the start of Twisties City campaign in 2010. They performed “Mesti Mau” (which is the official song for Twisties City campaign made popular by the Twisties TV commercial for this campaign) among 100 street performers and thousands of onlookers at the bustling street of Jalan Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur who sang and danced with them in unison to the catchy song. The flash mob became a YouTube sensation creating another huge buzz for the band. “Mesti Mau” was then released as PESAWAT’s fifth single.

PESAWAT had been invited to perform live at numerous events throughout Malaysia, Indonesia and Hong Kong.
Back in 2009, PESAWAT was chosen by Channel [V] to share a stage with Nidji (a top Indonesian band) during a showcase in Kuala Lumpur in conjunction with the launch of a TV series, Heroes Season 3. They also had the honour to support Dewa19 (a top Indonesian Band) during one of their concerts in Kuala Lumpur. PESAWAT continued to headline festivals and concerts in Malaysia where they have shared the stage with KoRn, Sean Kingston, NERD and other international acts besides local rock legends like Search and Wings and other local indie bands.
