"Lord Nelson gig review"

Another long, hot summer's day was melting into a balmy evening as Peter Appleyard and his band stepped up to the mic at the Lord Nelson in Burnham Thorpe to play a set perfectly in tune with the weather...

There was a mix of numbers from Peter's debut 'Day in the Sun' album, with some new and reworked songs destined for his next recording - hopefully soon! Peter also treated us to some classic covers performed in his individually different style. Eric Clapton's 'Layla', Neil Young's 'Heart of Gold' and the Kinks' 'Sunny Afternoon' were well received, and fitted the mood of the evening perfectly. Peter's interpretation of these familiar songs somehow gave the lyrics a refreshingly different slant, though I can't quite explain how!

Peter's own songs, written in collaboration with co-writers in Canada and New Zealand, are beautifully observed, with often wry and amusing lyrics - the cutting 'Popstar' being a prime example, and his band - Tom Maddison on bass and Craig Brown on drums - provided the perfect accompaniment - keeping it low-key to ensure not a word was missed...I specially enjoyed Craig's restrained drumming in numbers like 'When I fall' and 'Flames against the sun'.

Peter must certainly be one of Norfolk's most talented and accomplished singer/songwriters. He can entertain and entrance the audience, and his emotive lyrics touch the heart. If you haven't heard him yet, please check out Peters gig dates at www.myspace.com/peterappleyard you won't be disappointed! Peter Appleyard is definitely a name we'll be hearing more of in the future.

"Ivy House, Holborn, London."

'Checking out Yerge Entertainments Acoustic Sessions at the Ivy House, Holborn, I stumbled across the very talented, Norfolk based singer/songwriter, Peter Appleyard.

Following a fairly quiet start to the session Peter kicked the evening into life with a lively collection of acoustic originals.

Starting with heart felt opener 'Day in the sun’, which ended with an otherworldly effects finale, Peter grabbed the audience’s attention once more with the bouncy summery pop of 'Can’t help smiling'.

Peter then stepped back to older material with the funky 'Master of illusion', which incorporated an effective wah-wah solo, and dynamic Latin rhythms on the guitar. With requests from the audience, intimate ballad Sleepless proved a real highlight for many as Peter layered-up chiming guitar picking alongside a touching vocal performance.

Dynamic high point of set was the dark epic 'This ain’t love’, which featured yet more guitar looping and some scorching vocals. This song not only grabbed the audience’s attention but a few bystanders across the road too!

Peter ended the evening with a surprise electro infused 'Popstar’, an X factor protest song. Combining witty, cutting lyrics with a funky off-beat groove this song really allowed Peter to experiment with different guitar and vocal effects and he enlisted help from the audience for a successfully rousing finale.

A great set all round from this talented new artist and definitely an act to watch out for. ****

"Crofters Session Review"

Peter Appleyard added just the right touch to start the evening off and left us all with a sense of, "If this is how the evening starts, bring it on!". Well done Peter, excellent set mate and I heard some ver....rry positive comments about your set. - Pete Kitchen. - The Acoustic Kitchen

"The Promise EP"

Local acoustic stalwart Peter Appleyard steps along to that much-frequented Norfolk recording studio The Mill for his new four-track EP. Jonny Cole - who has helped Cord and Catherine Feeny among many others - is on board for production and mixing duties, and his involvement means the songs slip easily from folk-with-a-bit-of-indie acoustic to a satisfying full band sound. The songs are a multinational effort, with Peter helped by New Zealander Kevin Harty and Canadian Freddy Bolen. Title track The Promise moves smoothly from acoustic intro to full band. Angel or Devil? is more laid back - even vaguely funky - while Desert Rain, with it's catchy chorus and slick guitar licks, is the standout. Sleepless winds up proceedings in mellower style.

"The Promise EP Review"

'Certainly the new CD has immediate appeal, as opening track The Promise welcomes the listener in with an upbeat energy, and chorus which is easy to hook into. The CD continues to draw the listener in with the funky and effortlessly laid-back riffs of Angel or Devil. And the warmth and strong harmonies of Desert Rain, which after an acoustic style intro, emerges with a richer sound, a memorable chorus and feelgood crescendo.'

Bio

Peter Appleyard is an expert at making afternoon tea. He also writes, records and performs exceedingly fine music too.

Bringing together a vast array of influences from the worlds of rock, pop & folk Peter crafts distinctive, feel-good & emotionally charged compositions. Its a heady brew indeed!

Starting out in the days of C90 tapes and 4 track Peter has never been limited by the resources available. It was these early recordings that found their way on to national television as the soundtrack to major television shows and news features.

Following some well received EPs Peter released his debut album 'Day in the sun' worldwide digitally in early 2010. Featuring the award nominated tracks 'Can't help smiling' and 'Popstar', the release firmly established his confident and original style. The album picked up regional airplay on BBC Eastern Counties, was featured on BBC Cambridgeshire Introducing, and received strong support from BBC Radio Norfolk as well as many other stations.

Performing the tracks live throughout the UK particularly showed the strength and wide appeal of Peters music. Making the national final of the Exposure Music Awards 2011 in London for Best Live act confirmed his talent too. Supporting some of Peters favourite independent and established artists proved a great experience and helped take his music to a new audience. As well as sold out shows locally Peter played national venues such as the legendary Troubadour Club (London), the iconic Hare & Hounds (Birmingham) and the Award winning Inn at Lathones (St Andrews).

Currently holed up in the wilds of rural Norfolk recording with acclaimed producer/engineer Jonny Cole, Peter plans to build on this early success. Working again with New Zealand based Songwriter/Actor Kevin Harty and backed by some of the UKs finest musicians the follow-up to 'Day in the sun' is shaping up rather nicely indeed. Be sure to keep a lookout as Peter will be posting a few tasters of the new material online in the coming months.
