"And The Winner of Kollaboration Los Angeles 2015 Is... Peter Chung"

It was time for the third act of the Kollaboration Los Angeles competition, which took place in the Los Angeles Theatre Center on June 27 2015. A dramatic spotlight was cast onto the next performer. It was the ultimate rock star entrance for singer/songwriter Peter Chung. Standing center stage, he emerged from the shadows, his bangs covering his face, just him and his guitar.

But then, as his introduction video was projected in the background, we watch his mystique slowly crumble. He starts to realize how awkward it is to stand up onstage by yourself waiting for your own introduction video to finish. He starts to laugh. He tells the audience he doesn't know what he was supposed to do. Was it a technical snafu? It didn't matter. Within a minute, he was able to simultaneously command the stage and disarm the audience, and as soon as he follow it up with his John Mayer-esque performance, the audience was mesmerized.

Chung ended up taking home the grand prize at the end of the competition, which was judged by Megan Lee (Make It Pop), comedian Danny Cho, mydiveo.com's Rosylnn Cobarrubias, singer-songwriter AC Lorenzo, and Michelle Sugihara, the executive director of the Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment (CAPE).. It was Chung's second Kollaboration win -- he won Kollaboration San Francisco back in 2012 -- and he will move on to the final round at Kollaboration Star this Fall to compete for the $10,000 grand prize. - Asia Pacific Arts

Bio

Peter Chung is a singer-songwriter from the San Francisco Bay Area who is pursuing his dream to be a famous singer-songwriter.

When he was growing up, Peter Chung was surrounded by music. His mother played piano, his father played guitar and both sang in the church choir. From elementary school to junior high, he was given piano lessons, and from middle school to his junior year in high school he played trumpet for the orchestra and marching band. In his sophomore year Peter also learned how to play the drums for his church. Then there was the guitar

Peter had always liked attention and guitar was the way to get it. Playing trumpet for a large orchestra and keeping the beat behind the worship team at church was not satiating this appetite. He saw that at church the leader was the guitar player, and in most bands the guitar player was at the spotlight, not the drummer. Guitar was the way to go and Peter was determined to learn it. Whoever he considered was a good guitar player was barraged with questions about what songs to play and tips to play better. Initially, the music that Peter learned to play on guitar was an odd mix of punk/alternative rock and gospel music, until one day his classmate showed him No Such Thing.

John Mayers music inspired Peter to practice guitar more and perform in public. Many hours a day were devoted to learning Johns songs on the guitar; as much as eight hours! Due to the complex chords and difficult rhythms, Peter was challenged by each song from the Room For Squares album. At first playing Johns songs on guitar was hard enough but through practicing Peter learned how to sing and play at the same time. Encouraged by his friends to play at open mics around the San Jose area, he began to get the attention he desired. At first he played covers of John Mayer, Alkaline Trio, Incubus and a few others but he felt something was missing; he wanted his own songs. Inspired by high school romance and the lack of it, he began to write his own songs and play these songs instead.

After graduating from UC Santa Barbara and trying various jobs, Peter decided that music was going to be the main focus of his life. Pursuing a music career was always tugging at his heartstrings and the normal life was not making him happy. While working various jobs, Peter would perform music during the weekends, and although a few people would encourage him to pursue a career as a musician, he did not take this to heart until 2012.

The rest is currently happening!
