Peter Gelling was born in Bulli, New South Wales, where he recieved his first guitar lessons at the age of nine, before moving to Canberra, A.C.T. During High School he also played Cornet & Trumpet. After hearing Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee at the age of 16 he developed a passion for the Blues and set about teaching himself Blues Harmonica and learning Blues Guitar from records, along with studying Classical Guitar, Harmony, Composition and Piano at the Canberra School of Music. Through the next few years he also learned to play Bass, Tenor Sax, Banjo, Mandolin, Drums & Hammond Organ.
Until 1996 he was well known around Canberra for his teaching (Guitar, Bass, Harmonica & Keyboards), courses on Blues Appreciation, mentoring work with young musicians, weekly solo nights at Tilley's, regular chats on ABC Radio, and his distinctive Guitar style in the band, Blind Freddy which was a regular at Soup Plus and other Sydney venues. Blind Freddy was a support act for many Blues and R & B legends including Albert King, Junior Wells, Canned Heat, Rod Piazza & The Mighty Flyers, Little Charlie & The Nightcats and Screaming Jay Hawkins. In 1995 Blind Freddy produced a self-titled CD with many of the tracks written by Peter.
In 1996 Peter was forced to give up performing due to ill health. He spent the rest of the year completing a Blues Guitar instruction book, which was accepted by Adelaide publisher, Koala Publications who publish the "Progressive" series of instruction books which sell worldwide. He was later offered a job by the publisher and moved to Adelaide. He still lives in Adelaide and has now written over a hundred books for a variety of instruments.
Through his job, Peter developed additional skills as a session player, producer and sound engineer for the CD's which accompany Koala Production's instruction books. These skills led to the release of his first solo album "Bluestime" which was nominated for an ARIA Award in 2000. Peter wrote almost all the songs, played almost all the instruments and produced the album.
Songs from his follow up album "Fortune" featuring vocalist Doug Williams won the 2003 MUSICOZ Award, and second prize in the 2004 International Songwriting Competition (Blues Category).
The new album "My Sister's Shoes" was released in October 2008. It is a collaboration with vocalist Kate Meehan and pianist Skip Landy. All titles are originals.
