Bio
Peter McMurtry Band consists of Peter McMurtry (banjo, guitar, vocals), Aaron Hoffman (mandolin, piano, vocals), Sam Gleason (electric guitar), Sam Whillans (upright bass), and Brandon Munro (drums).
Peter McMurtry started composing original songs about four years ago at the age of 16 drawing from diverse influences such as Appalachian folk music, indie rock, jazz, and world music. After learning the banjo shortly after Peter, now at age 20, has built up quite the technical chops and is quite a virtuoso on the instrument. An active member of the Guelph music scene, where he is in his second year of university, Peter has wowed audiences with his haunting baritone voice and original, extremely musical songwriting.
Aaron Hoffman and Sam Gleason are currently both students at Humber College in Toronto enrolled in Jazz Performance and bump up the level of musicianship in the band significantly. With subtle guitar solos, and energetic organ licks, an element of jazz inspired folk can be found weaved in between the banjo rolls and vocal harmonies. Peter and the other band members met while attending Peterborough Collegiate and Vocational School where they honed their musical talents in the PCVS integrated arts program.
