"Pharmatronik Live Varsity 15/3/2010"

Pharmatronik - The Varsity, Wolverhampton, 15/3/10

Debut gigs by new bands are notoriously poor and low-key affairs that are often best forgotten. This live debut from Pharmatronik can no way be viewed in that context. The West Midlands-based three piece took to the stage on Saturday night with an up-front and in your face performance that had a sizeable audience in raptures. These three, consisting of long-standing musical partners David Smith and Paul Saunders, along with first-time vocalist Paul Taylor, produce an amazing sound that hints at many influences but is unique.

The band, backed by a laptop adding drums, keyboards and electronica, took the Varsity by storm with their own take on post-punk indie rock. From the opening instrumental introduction through to the uptempo New York-inspired punk of 'Something That You Like' Pharmatronik produce a wall of sound that stands alongside many of the more established acts around today.

Instantly singable songs such as 'Tripwires', 'Elephant God' and the recently digitally released single 'It Might Mean Nothing' went down a storm with their audience and showcased how tight a live band they are (even though this was a live debut). While Smith and Saunders ably handle the music Taylor comes from a long line of frontmen who demand attention from any audience.

Hopefully the band will continue to maintain the energy and enthusiasm of this performance and their upcoming, as yet untitled, debut album will capture the essential essence of the live experience. Looking forward to more.

Bio

Pharmatronik is an electro-post-punk-space-rock band based in the Birmingham area of the UK. The band consists of David Smith, Paul Saunders and Paul Taylor. The three write songs that have strong melodies and hooks along with a unique edge.
Influenced by most genres and eras of music from the 1960's through to 2010 the music is written by Smith and Saunders, with words provided by Taylor. Smith and Saunders experiment with sounds and musical textures when creating their aural landscapes.

Live, the band play an expansive and huge sounding set featuring loops and keyboards. The trio are a real power unit.

The band have written and recorded their debut album over the last few months, with some tracks being mixed by Dare Mason, who has produced and mixed for artists such as Placebo, the Church, Cinerama, Blow Monkeys to name a few.

Pharmatronik recently released their debut single through itunes and are currently looking for a label to release the upcoming album. Smith and Saunders have also recently remixed a track for LA-based musician/producer 'Pocket' which features vocals from indie-legend Tanya Donelly which will feature on the last of pocket's collaboration EPs.
