Bio

Phat Kat

Phat Kat aka Ronnie Cash's interest in becoming an emcee all started back in the mid-1980s as a teenager growing up in Detroit. Hip-hop influences included greats such as Whodini, Run D.M.C., Rakim, Fat Boys, Big Daddy Kane, & KRS-One, just to name a few. From then on, he worked hard daily writing rhymes and perfectly his style. Around the mid 90s, Phat Kat teamed up with fellow Detroiter Jay Dee to form the duo known as 1st Down. In the fashion of the legendary Gang Starr, 1st Down was comprised of Phat Kat on vocals and Jay Dee on production. This duo soon became one of the first Detroit hip-hop acts to score a major label deal when they signed with Payday. Out of this venture came a 12"single which included the tracks "A Day Wit The Homiez" and "Front Street", which also made it's way onto the Payday: Representin' The Streets compilation album. Unfortunately, that was the last release from 1st Down.

Phat Kat would continue to team back up with Jay Dee in the future, starting with an appearance on "Fat Cat Song" and it's remix on Slum Village's locally released project "Fan-Tas-Tic" (Vol. 1). Then in 2000, the two collaborated on Phat Kat's "Dedication to the Suckers" 3-song 12" single released on House Shoes Recordings. The single sold an impressive 5,000 copies in its first day and topped out to sales of around 10,000. Again in 2001, he appeared on Jay Dee's "Welcome 2 Detroit" album on the track "Featuring Phat Kat", and also made a guest appearance on the song "Me and My Mans" by the protégés of Jay Dee, Frank N Dank.

While continuing to work on his music, Phat Kat also found time to make it on some popular hip-hop tours. First making an appearance on A Tribe Called Quest's Love Movement Tour, Phat Kat also was featured on the Okayplayer Tour and the Lyricist Lounge Tour, along with an overseas tour with Slum Village and D'Angelo.

In 2003 Phat Kat finished his debut full-length album "The Undeniable LP", featuring production from Jay Dee, Black Milk, and Young RJ Ne'Astra.

Phat Kat is planning a debut on Look Records.
