"Meet Pheni"

There will be MCs moving on and off the stage rapidly tonight at the Rex Theater, where the headliners are Scripture & Flexx, Big-T and Blo Bugotti.

Trying to jump out from the pack will be newcomer Pheni, who recently released his debut album "Past Due." Pheni is a rapper who grew up with his mom and sisters in the Mon-View Heights housing projects in West Mifflin. He is also a father and a grill cook at the Pittsburgh Burger Company who aspires to be a "voice of the people" rather than a party rapper.

"He's a blue collar guy from Pittsburgh and that allows his music to make a greater impact with the people," says his manager Chris Scott. "I know when people listen to music (in general) they want a release from their everyday grind and struggle and the last thing they want to hear is someone complain about their own issues. What Pheni does so well is that when he talks about the grind and the struggle he flips it as a way to inspire and motivate."

Check him out at http://wherespheni.com

The show begins at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $9.50. Go to http://rex.greyareaprod.com.

Bio

There's not much to him; grill cook, father, rapper. That sums him up. Thats not the first titles you would think a rapper would have, but that's what makes him special. He grew up in the Mon-View Heights housing projects in Pittsburgh with just his mother and his sisters while his father was away locked up. Coming from the environment he comes from and seeing how street life has affected his friends and family, he figured he'd rather flip burgers than get involved in the 'hoods normal extracurriculars. And that's what he did. He's been a grill cook @ Pittsburgh Burger Company (formally known as Fuddrucker's) for years and he chose make an honest living while still focusing on his dream of making it in the music industry.

Pheni doesn't try to be something he's not, he doesn't want to put a front on like most rappers do because they think thats what you're supposed to do. Don't get me wrong he aspires for a better life for him and his family, but he'll talk about that when he's at that point. Right now, he's a blue collar guy from Pittsburgh and that allows his music to make a greater impact with the people. I know when people listen to music (in general) they want a release from their everyday grind and struggle and the last thing they want to hear is someone complain about their own issues. What Pheni does so well is that when he talks about the grind and the struggle he flips it as a way to inspire and motivate. Combine that with his lyrical ability and seamless flow most people instantly gravitate towards him. He aims to be the voice of the city. The artist that people will listen to and get an immediate understanding of life in the Steel City, but like I said he wants more and hopefully he'll be looked at as the voice of people.
